Were the transfer case fluids changed prior to this problem?

Just curious.

So...it’s been a battle. Dealer discovered that one of the front diff bearings had come apart and run through the diff trashing it. Whole front diff had to be replaced to the tune of $2300. Fought with them for about 15 days over warranty coverage. I was at 100400 miles and about 45 days past my 5 years. Finally ended up paying $990. They covered the rest. Truck works great. Dealing with most of these guys is like beating your head against the wall. Had to just keep at it till the manager went to bat for me. In the end it turned out good.
I have seen this before.. The lock ring that holds the bearing adjuster breaks.. Then the adjuster moves and it's all over..
Sorry about your luck!

Thanks for posting the follow-up. Sorry to hear about the end result but I’m glad you found the problem and got at least some help from the dealer/GM.

When I had my front diff gears replaced, the shop said they work on our front ends pretty regularly. Mine held up fine for the 70k prior to getting my gears swapped. No problems after the gear change either. While they were in there, I had them replace my bearings. It was only an extra $100-200 and will likely give me another 100k miles or more of trouble free usage.

Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m sure it will help anyone else who has similar symptoms.

Fluids had not been changed prior to discovering the problem. It had just reached the recommended time frame. That was going to happen with the next service. I guess when you use it more than a few times a year you’re considered to be in the severe or extreme usage areas. I’m gonna change fluids every 35k minimum from here on out. Not sure it will help but we’ll see. I appreciate all the replies and suggestions. Thanks all!
