I wish there was a way to pin some messages on this thread. Here are a few that every new reader needs to read: 

 

1. Yes, if you have a rear slider your window WILL leak. Period. (you may last longer if you live in a desert) 

2. Yes, your window will eventually leak again if the dealer "seals it". 

3. No, your replacement window is not some new, unicorn design that will finally solve this. 

 

I realize I'm taking some liberty with the finality of statements #2 & #3, but those claims hold up pretty well on this 180+ page thread.

The company owners now are considering not touching any sliding windows unless under contract from GM.  They don't want the liability to fall on them if someone comes directly to them, bc if the truck is less than 3 years old, they order OEM glass, which we all know will just crack and leak eventually.

 

Anyhow, they are going to study the aftermarket slider and compare it to several OE GM rear sliders and advise me after they have done so.  

Final update that may help some and infuriate us all:

 

Local glass guys got together, some of these guys have been doing this for 30+ years, and studied the aftermarket window from ATI.  They actually got two of them in.  They said it is not a solution and there were a number of reasons why.  Advised me to avoid that route.

 

Some of their techs have been doing these repairs for GM dealers and have relationships with upper management at GM.  The word from GM is that they are very aware of this, but they have no intention of making a permanent fix at this point.  Its TSB sealant, then replace glass, then sealant, etc.   Until the owner is out of their 36K bumper to bumper, then they are holding the owner responsible.   This may change, hope it does, because it is not a good look for GM.  This glass company said they were shocked at GM's position and they will not buy any GM product for their fleet simply due to GM's handling of this issue.  They also work on other brands and other brands are having similar issues, but they are being addressed properly (Tundra, Ford, Ram).  Basically, if you aren't already aware, GM does not care about their consumers.

 

Lastly, their best tech that has done dozens of these repairs, advised the most successful repair is to replace the glass and at the same time to perform the TSB sealant.  It adds some structure and stability, but is still only a temporary fix but should last longer.  

 

Their next advice, once you are out of warranty, is to simply install fixed glass or trade/sell.

Thanks for the great info Lexdrew. This is not a shock as if GM really wanted to fix this it would have been done already. Mine is in now for the first attempt at fixing the leak. I'm giving 1 shot, and the next time it leaks I'm having the solid glass installed. It's worth it for me to not have to deal with this long term.

Three model years and this problem goes unresolved. And GM isn’t even attempting to solve the problem with an engineering fix at the factory. I think SPASierra may be onto something, this has all the makings of a class action suit if enough complainants get involved. I’ve read it only takes 40 people to start a suit.

Start it and they will come.

 

They will handle this like they did (didn't) handle the cracking dash issue on 2007-2014 models. My Yukon XL Denali had the cracked dash and the bankruptcy cleared them for a class action up to 2010 models. Not sure where the case is because I traded in the Yukon for my 2020 leaking truck.

I haven’t purchased a truck, although I really like the 2021 GMC Denali. But at this point, I may just hang on to 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 until a body update is done in 4-5 years. Or I could just buy now and add the sealer along the top of the back window myself. Decisions...

That's what I did, added the Kent sealant myself.  So far, so good.  I water tested it for a week with the headliner down.  Rain and with a hose.  There were some spots the tech missed when he applied the sealant.  Once  I gave it an even level of sealant across the top, all leaks stopped.

Made it without incident and oil pressure intact. It’s dripping off the skid plate. Guessing oil cooler or line but they can’t look at it until tomorrow.
 

Not trying to hijack with my own calamities but I did think it was pathetic and kinda funny to have the thing leaking in two places at once. Oh well. ?

 

What I’ve read in the last page has almost talked me out of trading for a 2022. Just sayin, GM...

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
