tranny swap

i have a 1996 chevy 4x4 ext cab with th 5.7 with the 4l60e trans will the trans fit in a 2002 chevy 4x4 ext cab with the 5.3 in it both are dog leg 4x4

You're talking about auto trans compatibility and then say both are manual trans (dog leg shifter)? Wat? Unless you're mixing up colloquialisms and are meaning that both are a floor shifted transfer case. Ignoring that, the 96 trans will physically bolt up to the the 5.3, but it won't have the bolt hole at 12o'clock that the 5.3 has. Also, the valve body and torque converter are different, as well as a couple other things. It's not worth it IMO. You're better off getting one near or the same year you're putting it into.

Both tranny's are automatic sorry for the confusion so I would have to change stuff out for it to work

No worries, but yes, you'd have to swap some things to make it work.
