Oil life indicator says it's at 27%. Gonna change the oil in the next week or so. I haven't changed my own oil in 30 years! Once I reset the indicator is it based on mileage or is there something else that affects it? Was going 6k between changes in my '09 RAM. I was using Kendall Full Synthetic in it. I have since learned the difference. How long is too long between changes? I'm an old goat and 12 months or 25k miles just doesn't feel right. The debris that gets in the oil doesn't just disappear. Truck is a 2016 Silverado 1500 with a 5.3. I am sure this subject has been beat to death. But searching for "oil life" left too many responses to read through.

On my 15 Silverado I was using Valvoline full synthetic and changed the oil every 7500 miles, the percentage would be down to 10% around then. I was under the impression that it was based off mileage but now I'm not sure

The olm is, to my understanding, based on an algorithm that takes load, RPM and total revolutions into account.  Theoretically, if you're constantly at full throttle and higher RPM, your olm will count down faster.  Similar with towing.  On the other end of the spectrum, if you baby it and run low RPM low load on the interstate all the time, it will count slower.  I understand there is a limit and GM programs it at about 7500 to 8000 miles.  No matter how easy you are on the throttle, it I'll will not go past that.

This.

When my truck tells me to change the oil, it's right around 7k miles.

That is by far the most logical explanation! I used to think there was some sophisticated sensor counting the pieces of debris passing through the oil filter and base the number on that.

I haven't had the chance to test the 2018 yet.  In my 2014, regardless of what I did, pulling boats, pulling trailers, fast driving, slow driving, it always ran down to 7500 miles.

I don't even use the oil life indicator and will usually change my oil every 4 to 5 thousand miles using amsoil full synthetic. I know that might be a little overkill but I figure oil is cheap and engines are expensive.

Yes, I believe your correct!  I blow past 7500 all the time and when the OLI hits "0" it's like 7600-7700 miles.

Our OLM on the 2016 Suburban is set to 7,500 miles when it reaches 0%.  Everytime, no matter how it is driven.  We went on a long road trip, 14 hours to Baton Rouge and then back, right at 2,500 miles of driving time on the interstate and the OLM was down to 0% when we got back, I checked the miles and it was 7,500 since the last change.

Following the OLM is a good rule.  Do a tire rotation at the same time and then change out the wiper blades at every other oil change.  Keeps things simple.

This is correct as far as I can tell it's max is 7500 miles. I like to change it at 5000. Oil is cheap. New motors are not.

On my 2011 5.3 which I towed a lot with it would only go 4500- 5500 miles before it was at 0%. The trailer weighed only 3500 lbs but was almost always on the hitch.

When I got my last free oil change at the dealer on one of my 2018's the window sticker said to come back after 5000 miles for what that's worth.

I change my oil every 5,000 miles or 6 months, whichever hits first. I’m working much closer to home now so I usually take my wife’s car. I have only put 3400 miles on the truck since I changed the oil in October and that includes a 1,000 mile round trip to Memphis. Last month I only put 200 miles on the truck. My OLM is usually around 50% when I do my changes.

I also do 5000 miles on full synthetic. Overkill, I'm sure but oil is the lifeblood of the engine so it's worth it to me.
