Hey Guys,

I own a 2009 GMC Sierra 1500, just a quick question what's the proper way to switching a manual transfer case on gears, 4Down, N, 4UP and 2UP?

Posted

from 2hi to 4l ,transmission in neutral and truck moving slowly if possible ,

and the same for the 4low to 2hi

2hi to 4hi is shift on the fly

Ok awesome thanks. One more thing is it true that it is not recommended to drive more than 60KM/HR on 4x4?

Don't know what's recommended ..... but I've been over 50 mph (80 km/h) in 4x4 - still works fine. Not the safest plan of attack, because if you lose it going that fast in the snow it won't matter how many drive wheels you have - there's no recovering once you lose it.

I don't know if I'm missing something but I tried shifting my transfer case to 4L and I grinned my gears.

Between 4H, 2H & 4L there is N with a ((P)) sign. Do I have to engage the emergency brake?

From your explanation, If I'm in 2H I switch my transmission to N and switch the transfer case to N, then switch the transfer case from N to 4L. When I wont to switch from 4L back to 2H I put the transmission in N, then put the transfer case in N, then back down to 2H and transmission to D to drive away?

I've tried many times but haven't had any luck, could there be something wrong with the transfer case?

Sorry guys not familiar with this. This is my first truck. Thanks in advance.

Should not have to place transfer case to neutral to switch to any other selection.

Does it shift into 4hi all right? Big thing with 4lo is truck will not shift until everything is right (very low speed, transmission in "N", NO throttle). The shift takes a few seconds and can not be rushed.

However, if you are hearing grinding of gears I'd take it to a shop/dealer to have it checked out just in case there is a bigger problem.

Rob: I know I just said the same as you did, no insult.

Alright just got it from trying it out. Safe to say I understand how to switch it now. Previously I might not of dropped my speed enough, maybe that's why there was grinding. Also this time I didn't switch to N I just passed it in a fast motion to 4L. So thanks for the help guys. Does grinding geas impact the transfer case a lot? I grinding them maybe more than 5-6 times trying to figure this out.

moving slightly and going from 2hi to 4low thru neutral does sound like hell but its ok ,there is no syncro for that shift

no insult taken Mark
