hi all

just a heads up that there are still some good dealerships out there. i had earlier this spring had a defective cam lobe and two collapsed lifters.

shortly after i complained that i still heard a ticking (the infamous piston slap). i finally followed up as it was getting closer to the end of my warranty. as of today they are ordering me a new crate motor. i rolled my eyes (although i am very relieved that they doing this) hoping that things go better, going forward. to all those with warranty left, if u have noises and u have warranty left, follow up with the dealership. they are not supposed to do that!!!

it is a shame that a 6.2 motor, which was previously described as bulletproof, have so many issues with less than 100 k on them??? this is definitely a love/hate thing with this truck!!

cheers

well today i picked up another "bullet proof" motor installed in my truck. in all seriousness, i was taken care of with no b.s. i am looking forward to trouble free ownership going forward. i did about die though, when i had a quick glimpse of the bill ($11,300ish). it drove nice and smooth and without any extra noises. just going to follow the general consensus of as much city driving as i can do, or at least enough varying of speeds if on a highway. planning on dumping the oil around the 1000=1500km mark. still am a little upset that it came to this....:/

What do you have to be upset about? Your warranty is just about over and you got a brand new engine put in your truck free of charge. You basically have a brand new truck again. Sounds like a damn good deal to me. You could be $11,300ish more in debt. but you didn't have to spend a dime........Some people are never satisfied.

He was upset that he paid $50K for what is advertised as a supposedly "bulletproof" truck and then had to go through the hassle of having a new engine installed. If GM had used quality parts and assembled it correctly, he wouldn't have had to live through the hassle. For some of us, that can be a nightmare scenario that does not end well. But for some others, well, since Dale Earnhardt Sr drove a bowtie, they'll gladly overlook anything and keep buying them . . .

thank you maverick....hit the nail on the head. blackz71 yes my situation turned out great, and i am thankful, but if anyone knew how many times i have been to the dealer and how many rentals i have driven? it is hard to explain to a spouse too, why at one time i justified dropping a significant amount of money and the merits of keeping it long term. i am sure that this engine will be fine, but do u think i feel confident as time goes on and i don't have warranty? i put nothing but the best in or on it and don't cheap out with maintenance. i don't complain about the cost of putting premium gas in the thing, because that is what it takes. for the love of god, it has never been within 10 feet of a trailer or anything heavier than a load from costco. that said this thing should have lasted a lot longer, even if it was abused!!

this guys was just letting members of the forum know that if u aren't happy with what a dealer is telling you, or that certain noise is normal don't take it as gospel. look for another dealer who is on your side!

The issue he had with a mass produced assembly line product is nothing new and it happens all the time, especially in the automotive industry. Stuff happens and everything is not always going to be perfect no matter how much money it costs. People need to realize that and deal with things when and if something goes wrong.

GM uses quality parts, parts of any quality made are bound to fail. There is a warranty put in place by these manufacturers for exactly the reason the OP explained. As long as there is a human element to things, something is bound to go wrong with a product.

Your reference to Earnhardt driving a NASCAR cup series car with a Chevy sticker on the front of it has absolutely nothing to do with a GM vehicle having issues, that's a ridiculous statement.

Like I said in my original post, nothing at all to be upset over, problem solved on GM's dime. If it were paid for out of pocket then there would be a reason for the OP to be upset.

Now why you are so upset and seem to really dislike Chevrolet or GM as a whole, nobody buy you will know the answer to that. I would suggest relaxing a bit. Seeming to be so stressed out and making reference to and pretty much blaming a dead race driver over an issue somebody else had is nuts.

i don't think the reference to earnhardt was meant anything against him or the company, more of blindness to a brand name because of an infatuation with an idol. i am going to say again though, how would you feel if it were your vehicle, regardless of brand name. every company has issues for sure and i do mean every company. i bought the truck because i could afford too and i loved it, from styling to performance. that being said i am still upset that a 6.2 litre motor that has been treated like gold would last 4 years and less than 100km. that sir is b.s. on paper it should outlast me and my daughter. after all this i would buy another one, but there are an awful lot of nice vehicles out in the world. i definitely not someone who is brand happy and do recognize there are lots of beautiful cars and trucks not made by gm. i like and can appreciate all that there is to offer. cheers and don't let things like this get personal...it was just meant to be sharing of information and maybe airing dirty laundry to feel better. this is the idea of these forums.

That post was nothing personal at all. It was in response to a post that was not even made by you. Nobody should take anything personal or get up in their feelings, it's an internet forum and everybody is going to express their opinion.

I have had problems with new vehicles in the past. I had a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee that ended up lemon law buy back here in PA. The issue was the pinion gears in the rear. Each time the vehicle was put in gear or changed gear it would cause a loud bang and the vehicle would jump forward or backwards depending on which gear. It could not be repaired so they bought it back.

It was the first year redesign with the new body also. There was nothing anyone could do to fix it and was not worth getting upset over. Took it to the dealership when the issue occurred and let them do their job. My point was there is no need getting all worked up over a vehicle that has an issue because s**t happens. Really no need to get all worked up when it's not even your vehicle that had a problem.

IMHO, I wouldn't dump the oil before the manual recommends. Many new motors have a special oil used for the break in period and changing it early could cause damage. I'd follow the manual if I were you.

I dumped the factory oil after 500 miles in a brand new 2009 5.3L, and after 1000 miles in a brand new 2011 6.2L. Never had trouble with any noise or other problems with over 30k miles on the 09, and 19k miles on the 11. Won't hurt a thing.

Gm motors do not have any special break in oils. If you have ever changed a brand new engine oil before on the gm engines prior to 1K miles you would be happy you did so. I also add a magnetic drain plug to mine at the 500-750 mile mark.

Do they not come standard with a magnetic plug? My suburban had one from the factory. As for the break in oil, I didn't know GM didn't use special oil. Local dealer always told us with both of our GM trucks to not dump the oil before the manual said to.

They used to have magnetic drain plugs but the gmt900s and newer don't
