How Many Of These Monster GM Engines Do You Remember?

That list is not accurate. The 454 was produced and installed in cars up until the end of 1976. After that it was available in 3/4 ton trucks into the 80's that I know of.

 

And if they want to talk about the BIG engines, how about the GMC 637 V-8 and the GMC 702 V-12?

 

 

Heck, the 454 was available right into the late 90's, before the 496 came out. It just became known as the Vortec 7400. My uncle had an awesome GMT400 GMC 2500 4x4 crew cab with a done up 454 in it. Truck was a monster.

I know for a fact that in 72 Chev trucks had the 402 and it had it on the front marker lights. :jester:

I have seen pics of that, just never saw one in the flesh. It is about the only engine size that I have not actually seen on the side of a vehicle. For whatever reason the 402 was not well known around here. I recall at the time I first heard of the 402 that the story was it was 0.030 over 396 built from defective 396 engines. Remember that it was decades before the internet, so rumours and wives tales were common.

Never could afford a big block. Neither could anyone I know! Still can't. I will some day though, as God as my witness. Don't much care what brand it is either. Been eyeballing the late 60's Grand Marquis with a 429 as my next classic car. About the only thing that touches the upper-edge of my price range these days.

 

 

Got to drive a 396 in a '69 Chevelle SS that a wealthy friend of mine once owned. I got it running for him after it sat in someone's garage for 8 years, untouched & un-maintained. That's the only big block I've ever touched, or driven in my entire life. :(

 

He thought it was a piece of junk and sold it. :nonod: That was heartbreaking.

My favorite 454 was in a '77 GMC Camper Special 3/4t. truck I had years ago.That thing even with a huge slide in camper & a trailer full of dirt bikes still pulled a long,steep hill affectionately called The Grapevine here in SoCal at 60 plus,loved that truck.

 

454 with a TH400 was an unbeatable combination :thumbs:

I think that the first year for the 402 was 70 or 71 not sure.. My dad bought a 72 Chevy that had the 402, turbo 400, in it and I remember the markers saying 402 on them. Back in my drag racing days built a lot of big motors, the most fun we had was a 482 ci in our Camaro on the coast it went 9.30's ran 9.80's in Phoenix. :jester:

Pretty good times but I suspect you had as much fun building it as racing it.

 

Wish I could ''play'' with the one in my burb but you know Cali.....TBI don't help much neither :(

I went up the Grapevine in my '86 Grand Marquis. It got stolen in Phoenix, and was recovered in Bell. I had to take a bus from Oakland at 1am to East L.A. to retrieve it from the impound yard. That was fun ... :ughdance:

It wasn't a monster, but I've always heard good things about the older 327.

Pulled one from a '64 Impala wagon,rebuilt it and put it in a '67 1/2t Chevy longbed,ran great.Not a speed demon just a good reliable hauler.Had a camper in that one too(ca. 1978 IIRC)

 

My son has one now in his '69 GMC 3/4t truck,he got the truck for $400.00 barely running.After some troubleshooting by us & a Neighbor got it running pretty well.Again,not a speed demon but a good reliable DD.

1979 C70 which has the 454 Tall deck, to make room for 4 rings on the truck pistons, only built in 79-80.

13 speed Fuller/Roadranger, 717 gear ratio. Installed Holley Throttle Body EFI.

I bought a new 1970 Chevelle SS454. I traded in a 1966 Impala SS396 for it.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
