I think the collision avoidance stuff can be annoying, but it's the way of the world now.  We are human and, in a moment of weakness, if it ever helps it will have paid for itself.

A work truck regular cab base model with a locking differential, trailer hitch/hookup, rubber cab floor covering and a spray in bed liner works for me in a late model Silverado.

Posted

NEED to have

Leather (but - if they're still giving you horrible quality fake-ass leather on "all terrain" models I'd just take cloth & put aftermarket over it)

Heated seats

4wd (would prefer manual shift option as opposed to a knob/dial/button)

V8 (as in - will not buy a boosted 6)

Sliding rear window

limited slip/locking diff

Crew cab (would be more swayed toward manufacturer doing "mega" cabs, ability to use truck as a family hauler is important)

USB ports (small but important, wife's 2015 MDX, has ONE only ONE!!)

Hands free command of some type

Bluetooth

Backup & FRONT parking sensors (really like the proximity sensors for the front on my new GM - don't necessarily need a backup camera if I have sensors)

"auto" 4WD - this is very helpful during late late winter after we've had multiple storms you could be driving on stretches of pavement where it goes from complete hard pack snow cover, to ice, to dry salt caked pavement, to slush, back to snow & all over again over the course of 1 mile - auto4WD works nicely in these situations.

Common things offered but could go without & in some cases dislike:

push button start (don't want don't need - near deal breaker for me - hate it)

lack of shifter ie: push button/dial tranny inputs (HATE it even more than above, may also be a deal breaker - know that Dodge went this route)

power folding running boards

sunroof

ventilated/cooled seats

dual zone climate control

wireless charging

Backup camera (but must have sensors)

hands free parking

adaptive cruise control (interesting but not deal breaker)

lane departure warning/auto assist (not a fan of this tho)

Lots of stuff I can't even think of right now that is offered on new trucks that I don't "need" -

Thirty years ago my preferred options on a 1/2 ton were power steering, power brakes and air conditioning. Today these are not optional and I should be happy.  However, I find myself shunning potential purchases because of frills I would have mocked  a decade or two ago!  My local dealership just brought in an '18 SLE with max tow.  It's a beautiful truck but lacking power/heated seats and doesn't have a sliding rear window.  I am embarrassed to say that these particular options are preventing me from negotiating on this unit.  I know I would get a great deal and would manage fine with the more spartan list of options.  (Features like dual zone HVAC, adjustable pedals,  auto-dimming mirrors, centre console, etc. are also lacking in this particular unit but are not deal breakers, imo.)   This truck does have the max tow package, factory spray-in liner, 8" screen and is a great looking truck!   I think I need a re-boot!  A '60's 6cyl, 3spd without pb, ps or radio for a year would give me a greater appreciation for today's "base" model trucks!  What option other than the major items like engine size and colour would be a deal breaker for you?

Before I bought my current truck - 2017 SLE 4x4 dbl cab(which I LOVE!!), I had prepped a list of what I want, so when the time came I would be ready. I think this is important when buying, so one doesn't overbuy, or underbuy, or mistakenly try to compare apples to oranges. The list was based on what I had in my previous truck, plus a few new things I found I wanted. My new truck also came with heated seats, which wasn't on my list & I always thumbed my nose at previously. However, they have really grown on me!!  LOL
I really like the backup cam & also want one on the front. Also love the colour DIC & 8" touch display. Went with the GM undercoating (big$$$) & glad I did, as it is a great product, though I still think it's too pricy.
All the other options were on my list because I used them in my last truck and liked them.
This is the list I sent to the dealer:

Must haves:

4x4 (Kodiak ?) SLE or SLT
Double cab, or crew
Power windows
Power locks
Power mirrors
Heated mirrors and rear window
Intermittent wipers
A/C
Cruise
Tilt & telescoping wheel
power seat
2 12v power ports
USB ports
Auto dimming center mirror
Compass & outside temp
DIC with real time mileage etc.
Running/step boards
rear camera
8" display screen
box liner-plastic or spray-in
5.3 liter
3.08 or 3.42 rear, but need to test drive a 3.42 first.
Tow package with brake controller
Black or dark grey interior - cloth
40/20/40 front seat
keyless entry
Aluminum rims 17 or 18"
Splash guards
recovery hooks
locking rear diff.
4 movable upper cargo tie downs

Wants/nice to haves:

1st Cardinal Red colour, or
2nd Crimson red
3rd White
4th Silver
110v port
Nav (maybe) or Apple car play.
rear fender liners
undercoating

This is the type of issue currently facing those of us buying a new vehicle.  Options that we once couldn't imagine as a need are suddenly becoming deal breakers.  My current truck was my first with heated seats and now is a requirement for all future vehicles!

I guess I'm an old fart too at 58. I tend to keep the truck for a while and I'm at a point where I can afford what I want, but I don't like to go crazy and and spend $70k either, but I do like well equipped.

My must have list included 4x4, leather, Bose audio/Nav/CarPlay, tow package, dual climate control, remote start and heated seats/mirrors. I wanted a console, but when I bought, the trucks with the deal trucks I looked at didn't have a console. I thought, no big deal, I can add one. 16 months later, and I'm finding myself using the front hump floor space ALL the time. I'm actually very happy with the bench seating and won't be changing it.

I did end up with some things that weren't on my must have list like pwr seats, rear slider, adj pedals, garage door, Z71 package, spray in liner, ...

I do like the slider and I like the integrated garage door opener and the bed liner. Adjustable pedals I could do without. Z71 I could do without.

my dealbreakers:

4x4

3.42 gears

remote start

backup camera

cloth seats only. I will not buy a vehicle with leather seats.

power windows & locks

heated mirrors & rear glass

Heater

Air conditioning

AM FM radio

Things the wife made me get but I wouldn't care about otherwise:

heated seats.

Things I won't pay any extra for/ can live without:

power seats, pedals, etc. I adjust once and then they never move again.

heated steering wheel

any other high tech features that will be outdated before the warranty expires.

Onstar

Satellite radio

any other sensors, vibrators, lights, buzzers that are supposed to help me drive, but only annoy.

I've never used the rear sliding window in the last three trucks I've had it in.

Having said that, I'm acquiring a taste for more and more options.  I've benefitted greatly from the rear park assist, LED headlights, lane assist (yes, I'm one of the few that likes it), and one item in particular I've really enjoyed is the heated steering wheel (don't use the heated seats near as much).

Donstar: You live in Canada? Heated seats. As for leather? As someone who is in construction, they clean up real nice. I use leather honey on them, just like my boots. You tow? Trailering package, locking differential, air suspension possibly.

Budget? I haven't bought a new vehicle in 16 years and last 3 trucks were purchase used (2 years old in each case). I was able to get, IMO, more bang for the buck with buying used. Parking sensors? Check. Rear back-up camera? Check. Power rear window? Check. Spray-in bed liner? Check. After reading everyone's comments, it seems the only opinions and desires is your own. My grandparents always preached to me to buy the best I could afford. Good luck with your purchase.

I don’t think I included heated mirrors and rear glass on my list of must haves. Those I really consider a safety feature and they shouldn’t be something you have to pay extra for.

I originally was set to buy another Silverado, then I stopped by  a GMC dealership and looked at those. The one I liked was more then the Silverado and thought there was no way I could get it. Long story short, the things my Sierra has that the Silverado did not have where..heated seats, factory spray in bedliner, trailer brake controller, built in garage door opener, led bed lights. I feel I got alot more for just about a 1000 dollars more then the Silverado LT I wanted. But my 2 things I love heated seats, and the garage door opener. Don't settle you will regret it down the road. Lots of good deals out there. Good luck!

Man, talk to me 3 years ago when i bought my "first" truck, 2012 Ram 1500. I needed something that could pull more than 5k, So i bought it. It had a front power seat, big V8 and leather that worked for me.

As time went on, it became my wifes daily driver and shes 5'0 and i'm 6'0. We hurt for memory seats. Literally hurt, my knees would crush when i hopped in the car after her. We hurt for a backup camera (my wallet hurt). lol I am so surprised at the things i needed within the 3 years of owning a full size truck. Here i am 3 yrs later, and as I can afford more i just bought a brand new truck as i could not find a used one with the options i needed. Maybe i'm spoiled now, but i just did not want to need more options in a year. Figure out what you can afford, and get as many options as possible. Much better resale that way too.

I got every available options on my 16 SLT, I’d rather spend a little extra for things I may not need. From past experiences on vehicles I can live with adding $25 on my payment vs being pissed I don’t have the vehicle I wanted...especially when spending 50k. That’s an expensive item to live with if you’re not happy with it. Just my opinion

I agree. Get as much as you can. When l was building my truck online and comparing between the LT and LTZ, the extra I got and wanted wasn't that big enough price difference for me to give it a second thought. Especially when you're already looking at spending close to $50K anyways. I bought mine $12k under MSRP, so that was good too.

Dual heat, 8" screen, blinkers in mirror (folding as well), backup cam, power and heated seats, remote start were a must for me. Everytime else was a bonus.

    • Fred was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young pullets, and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing. Now, he could sit on the porch and fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. Fred's favourite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, would run for cover. To Fred's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. Fred was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the City Show and he became an overnight sensation among the judges. The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the "No Bell Piece Prize," but they also awarded him the "Pulletsurprise" as well. Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making. Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the unsuspecting populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention. Vote carefully in the next election, you can't always hear the bells.
    • Can someone confirm if the GM order workbench terminal is able to validate a custom build sequence:   1) Initialize the Allocation Base: Open a new vehicle build queue, select the 2026 Chevrolet Suburban 4WD, and pick the High Country (3LZ Preferred Equipment Group).   2) Select the Diesel Powertrain: Go directly to the engine configuration screen and choose RPO code LZ0 (3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel). Ensure it maps to the MHS 10-speed automatic transmission.   3) Deploy the Seating Swap: Navigate to the Interior Options screen and enter RPO code ATT to replace the standard captain's chairs with the power-release 60/40 bench seat. Because you are not trying to force a separate luxury or air-suspension bundle, the standard, premium D07 Fixed Floor Console remains active. The system will accept this change immediately without triggering a warning message.   3)Apply Heavy-Duty Hauling Capability: Input RPO code NHT (Max Trailering Package). The commercial terminal will automatically bundle the required trailering hardware and software modules to support the diesel engine's maximum towing capacity.   5) Layer the Premium Tech and Glass: Separately add code C3U (Panoramic Power Sunroof) and code UKL (Super Cruise) to the order screen.   6) Run the Final Validation: Click the "Validate Order" button at the bottom of the interface.
    • Spent the last hour or 2 googling and reading up on the spacer thing. I don't like the loss of thread contact on the slip on spacers, but it appears you can get "extended" lug nuts that reach into the hole of the wheel to get back the lost threads. Looks like the only true hubcentric slip on spacers are at least .375". I'd want as little as I could get away with and don't want to cause other clearance issues going any thicker. Bora seems to offer what appears to be a well made .375" spacer and extended lug nuts. I searched here and did find a couple threads recommending Bora. But not cheap. By the time I buy spacers and lugs, new TPMS sensors, then pay a tire shop to install the new sensors, I suspect I'm going to be in over $400. Thinking about running out and getting some washers to put behind the wheel to see if .375" is enough to clear calipers, turn lock to lock without rubbing, and to see if the wheels/tires look strange pushed out a little. This would just be to check fitment.
    • Roadmaster makes some quality parts; I have their sway bar. I considered the RAS, but I ended up bagging. I didn't know what kind of ride I'd get with RAS, and the bags have interior jounce bumpers, so I can run 0 pounds pressure. I figured I'd have the best of normal suspension ride with assist on-demand. But it seems you got pretty much the same in one item.
