Update. The factory missed Over a foot of sealant in the rear window. Waiting on a new window. Dealer decided to just replace the entire window and have a glass guy do it. I’ll give credit to the service department for doing this.

I joined the leaky rear window club yesterday morning.  Well probably before then since I had weird moisture building up on the interior of the cab and for some reason my windows just kept getting fogged up so easily.  Driver side is leaking pretty good, passenger side is a couple drips. 

I called the dealership and I'm scheduled for Dec 18th and they wont let me have a loaner.  They want to charge me $35 a day to get a rental car through them.  I opened a case with GM already.

 

After reading about 120 of the 173 pages here, I'm tempted to do the silicone fix since I'm pretty good with shipboard electronics and use the marine stuff already.  I'm just not too familiar with cars/truck maintenance repairs if its not an oil change or tire change.  I'd also have to rent a dry space/garage since my truck doesn't fit in mine. 

 

I'm really concerned with water getting in and since its freezing at night here in Washington it will just cause further damage.  Which I suspect is what triggered the water to be large enough for me to see it now.  I've got a waterproof truck cover on its way but its going to be a huge hassle taking that off and on if I want to drive the truck and now on rainy days I need to leave it covered at home.  I feel extremely robbed of the new car/truck experience from GM.  I really wish there was a recall and permanent fix from GM already.  I love the truck even though this will be the second time in the shop(a front left shaft broke already, J, F, or S, I don't remember but I still have the paperwork).  I've owned the truck for 4 months and its spent 1/5th of its time at the dealership and with this it will only extend the time spent away from me.  

 

 

Edit 1, Dec 3rd:  Changed dealerships to fix my truck.  Going 30mins further to the next chevy dealership since the tech I talked with knew exactly what my problem was and said he just fixed one two weeks ago and I'm having the exact symptoms.  Still they don't have a loaner vehicle either... its a Chevy Equinox for $35 a day.....  

Update: Dealership has been very knowledgeable and nice with my concerns so far over the phone.  They tried the sealant fix but said it failed their tests afterwards.  They will be replacing the rear window.  They ordered a new window and its coming from the other side of the US so I'm going to have to wait at least a week due to blizzards / shipping.

Can someone explain why it’s so common for the sealant fix to not work? You’re literally plugging everything with sealant, it makes no sense. I can see maybe after some time the sealant shrinks or cracks, but what about this example where they do it and it fails the test right after?

The TSB(18-NA-383....) for the sealant fix that dealerships have to do is only step 1 to prolong this problem out of the warranty.  The next step is window replacement.    The fix so dealerships can get paid is the bare minimum and people have found its a better solution to do it themselves and seal every bolt, crevice etc.  Their fix is one bead line.

When I pulled my spoiler off I notice probably 5-6 inches on at the top of the slider where the tech didn’t put any sealant or it was barely there.  Once I filled the whole gap with sealant to the top of the glass all my leaks stopped.  
 

Unless you remove the spoiler yourself, your at the mercy of the Service Advisor to tell you why the sealant failed.

In my case the dealership did a piss poor job by not only pushing the seal in when reinstalling the spoiler but not putting an even flow of sealer along with destroying my interior. I could have done a better job when I was 8 years old. Incompetence is the problem.

Gotcha, thanks. That’s what I was looking for. Seems like the dealer fixes (as far as the sealant goes) is due to them just being bad at putting the sealant on. Also seems like it works way better when done by the owner themselves.

I just didn’t know if I was missing something with the sealant itself having some property to it that makes it not work right. But again, seems like it’s the quality of the sealant installation that is mostly to blame.

Mine was sealed 2 years ago by the dealer.. Still no leaks. I will never trust it though and check for wetness every rain event or carwash.

Update: Picked up my truck yesterday for the second time. Their “glass guy” came in and confirmed that his previous installation was leaking and he resealed the window... kind of sloppily I might add as there is caulk on the rear glass and a little on the plastic frame by the slider. I’ll get it off the glass but will have to deal with it on the plastic. I asked my service advisor if he did the TSB as well, which I texted him the pdf that is on this page showing what to do, and he said no... he just resealed it. It’s supposed to rain like crazy today and tomorrow so we shall see. Kinda pissed that he didn’t just perform the TSB while he had it apart for the second time! 
 

I also bought the trim-lok in two different sizes that I’m going to install on the gap right above the window and the gap at the top of the spoiler.

Add me to the list 2020 RST Z71 1500 miles leaking from the passenger side trim rail it seems no wet head liner. Truck goes in on the 29th as dealer was booked up till then. Can someone link the TSB for this? I did a quick search and didn't find it attached some pics...Just so happens that GM sent me the Quality survey after i found the leak. Lets just say i let them know just what i thought about their handling of a 2+ year old KNOWN problem. I also had the no start no crank with dic error codes in the first 150miles and they just replaced the battery and did a software update.

With all the stories about people’s service dept experience, I don’t blame you to constantly check.  But I do feel a good sealant job will fix the problem short of GM demanding Fuyao/Vitro to use better plastic for the frame.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
