Where did my tow mirrors go?!

Hi guys, first time poster here. If I'm in the wrong section mods please let me know!

About 2 weeks ago I bought a 2018 Silverado 1500 LTZ 4x4, used with 12k miles. It has the tow package. I absolutely love the truck, it's great, and other Chevy owners seem super nice so far!

My Chevy has all the features of the tow package, including the chrome grille, trailer brake, pre-installed hitch, etc. but instead of the tow mirrors it has regular mirrors. Based on my research they are the "DL3" mirrors (heated, auto folding, etc.) but further research tells me that it should be pretty hard to install DL3 mirrors and make them fully functional if they didn't come on the truck since the wiring harness interacts with the memory functions of the seats etc...

This makes me wonder where my tow mirrors went, and what's up with the OEM DL3 mirrors being there instead? Did the factory offer a towing package with regular mirrors at some point in order to "exhaust" their parts bin as they prepared for the 2019 Models, or did the previous owner really go to such extreme lengths to remove the tow mirrors?

I've attached a picture to illustrate what I mean. Any input is appreciated.

Thanks guys!

Tow mirrors are not part of the standard tow package. Standard tow package is essentially just the hitch. You probably have the LTZ Plus package to get the DL3 and integrated trailer brake controller. Tow mirrors would be in Max Tow or optional add on.

If you have the Max Tow package and not the mirrors, someone could have changed them out. A copy of the window sticker or RPO codes would help. Try writing GM customer service if you don't have these.

Scratch the comment about tow mirrors being in Max Tow. I did a Build and Price on the Chevy site. Tow mirrors are an accessory even with that package. Window sticker or RPO codes would tell you if the truck was ordered with them.

I'll have to see, the original sticker was missing, I've considered contacting chevy directly with the VIN and seeing what they know. I'm 99% sure that the chrome grill like that (rather than the black inserts) only comes with tow mirrors based on what I've read... Going to dig deeper for sure. Thanks for your insight!

Email [email protected] with your vin. Ask for a copy of the build sheet (this gives you the list of RPO codes) and a copy of the service records (this shows any major repairs, warranty work, or recalls preformed at a stealership). This will also show any “added” RPOs I had a dealer swap my grille, add a tailgate decal, & wheels/tires to my truck now shows added options so yours might show this if parts were swapped at the dealership when it was new.

The RPO code for max tow is NHT. Only the NHTs come standard with the tow mirrors.

Z82 is the regular tow package RPO

Obviously the RPO code for the DL3s is DL3, DL8s are DL8, ect.

018s don’t have the RPO sticker in the glove box anymore but there is a QR code in the drivers door jamb you can read with a scanner or a app on a smartphone but guys say it won’t necessarily give you all the RPOs.

Sombody said something about social media might not do this anymore? If they send you a return email saying such the parts guy at your local stealership can print you a copy if he is cool and wants to help.

This is what mine says on the bottom of my sheet now

  Added Option Codes
#50 - Wheels/Wheel Covers/Locks/TPM Sensors #77 - Exterior - Front Grille/Grille Guards #16 - Graphics/Decals/Emblems - Kit

He has an 18.

On 18's the mirrors were included and only available (for factory order) as part of the max tow

(or could get as dealer accessory for $$$)

For 2018, DL3 were standard on LTZ and High Country.

Trailering package also std on his 2018 LTZ

Z82         Trailering Package, includes trailer hitch, 7-pin and 4-pin connectors, includes (G80) locking rear differential

Max tow was available on LT and LTZ, but not could not be ordered with Z71 versions of them.

NHT         Max Trailering Package, On Crew Cab and Double Cab models, includes 9.76" rear axle, (JL1) trailer brake controller, enhanced cooling radiator, revised shock tuning for increased control, heavier duty rear springs and increased RGAWR

On LTZ,  max tow -- With (L83) 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine, requires (PZX) 18" x 8.5" aluminum wheels and (RKX) 18" tires or may upgrade to (RD2) 20" chrome wheels with either (RC7) or (QSS) 20" tires. With (L86) 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine, requires (RD2) 20" chrome wheels with (QSS) 20" tires. Requires (DQS) Outside heated power-adjustable vertical camper mirrors. Not available with (Z71) Off-Road Suspension Package.

2019 Max Tow does not include trailer mirrors:

NHT         Max Trailering Package, includes 9.76" rear axle, (GU6) 3.42 axle ratio, enhanced cooling radiator, revised shock tuning for increased control, heavier duty rear springs, increased RGAWR and (KW5) 220-amp alternator

on 2019 LTZ - Requires (L84) 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine or (L87) 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine and 18" or 20" wheels and tires. Not available with (Z71) Z71 Off-Road Package.

Thanks so much for this helpful insight, sorry for the late reply, I was on the road all week. I am confused since my wheels measure 20"x9" and I have a 6spd transmission. I'll see if I can get an RPO sheet somehow, that'll help for sure. Also you seem very knowledgable on Chevy products, could you tell me if the rumor is true that if the 8th digit of the VIN is 0 or 3, it's a flex fuel vehicle? Mine isn't advertised as one... Thanks!

If it has RPO code FHS it is flexfuel, and will also have a 6 speed (MYC).   FHS standard on the 4.3L, optional on L83 5.3's.

FHS         E85 FlexFuel capable of running on unleaded or up to 85% ethanol

Download a QR code reader to your phone and 'read' the QR code on the label on the door post (there are 2 labels on them all).  If it doesn't have the RPS code label in the glovebox, it will have the QR code on one of the 2 on the post.

OR

Any dealer can download the build details from your vin. (I'd try parts and or service rather than a sales person, but your mileage may very)

wforrest08  is correct that the QR code won't list all the rpo's but should give the key ones that service/parts will want to know.

Got it, I actually used the QR code earlier and translated all but a few of the codes through google. Looks like I have FHO instead of FHS, no biggie since I don't purchase my own fuel anyways thanks to my job, was just curious... I'm going to the dealership tomorrow morning anyways for some stuff so I will try and obtain a full spec sheet while I am there.

    • For some unexplained reason my father wanted a salvage yard. As we were getting the family business off the ground one brother ran the salvage yard. We gathered there when rained out working on pipelines in the eighties to pull parts. Perfectly good running vehicles would come to us simply because they wouldn’t pass emissions inspection. We were able to swap parts and sell some of them. I got a clean old nova with a bad engine. I pulled a perfectly good small block out a Camaro. A father and son project with a rebuilt engine. The son couldn’t get the engine running right. The problem was the spark plugs weren’t gapped. The 90s vehicles probably widened the gap of shade tree do it yourself engine repair. My do it yourself hot rod repair stopped at the 70s. After that my trusted mechanic kept them in running shape.
    • I have an old dental chair in my shop. Something I got for free and apparently it has more than scrap value? People collect them although mine isn't restored or anything. It's visually interesting (1930's Ritter) which is why I like it. And it IS decently comfortable if you kick back.   When a good buddy of mine saw it he said, let me guess, Atlas. It's a conversation piece? As in, you ask the questions, they do the talking?   Where do you hide the jar of teeth?   I would never.
    • Are we talking about the same thing, though? The 7 versus 3 wear metals was from Lakespeed's 3.0-specific oil brand comparison test between AcDelco oil and Mobil ESP. The filter remains a constant so whatever excess particles the AcDelco oil is producing aren't being filtered out.   I'm assuming there's a parallel comparison to be made; IF the filter can filter down those particles, engine life increases, and your graph makes the case that a better filter (lower micron rating) can increase engine life. Introducing fewer particles AND filtering those particles with higher efficiency is the best of all worlds. Good oil, good filter.   Where we may disagree is the "baseline relative engine life". I'm more apt to believe the base engine life value is 200k+ on very average oil and filters, "bulk oil of unknown brand and white-label generic fleet-grade filter, Jiffy Lube"   Going from a 10 micron filter to a 5 micron filter should boost a base 200k to 275k in a vacuum as a single factor alone.   Here's the whatabout: How does regularly changing the oil and filter ahead of recommended schedule influence baseline engine life? Most people aren't going to science the heck out of this stuff or ask about Micron ratings, HTHS, or wear comparison tests at Jiffy Lube. Most of the Jiffy lube techs would say they need to call their tech support line to even try to get an answer.   --   Because we love anecdotes here, when I was fishing for 4.3 parts at a local yard this weekend, ALL of the 4.3 vehicles had well over 200k. I love looking at odometers of junked vehicles. How far did THIS go before landing at the crusher? The ones that still had engines weren't seized. None of them were vehicles I'd consider were Amsoil queens, in fact most of them had some kind of service cling-sticker in the corner of the windshield indicating it probably had very average maintenance services. Even the fresh parts rigs- I'm not sure taking an S/T series to 400k has much value considering the running value of those vehicles was probably somewhere around $1,000. 25+ years is a good run on time alone.   The intake manifold I salvaged had clean and bright pool areas. As expected, I found the fuel lines in the manifold rubbed through, just like mine. I'm guessing the lines on that donor truck started leaking, the truck started running rough, and its owner said that's enough I'm unwilling or can't take it out of service for several days, or spend $1000+ to repair it at a shop, it's simply time for a newer more reliable vehicle (or, more than likely, this is the 2nd, 3rd time this has happened in the truck's lifetime). While I don't count on my Blazer for reliability, the thought of giving it away for parts at certain points during my adventure, and being mentally free from its needs has has crossed my mind. I'd be losing $1500 or so, but I can only make more money; not time.
