Greetings all,

I was pretty unhappy with the way my truck drove. I have a 19 LT (5.3) and I put a set of Trail Boss wheels/tires (275/65/18) on it. But, I noticed that no matter the size of a bump I went over the rear end swayed and the front bounced for what seemed like 20 minutes. Some bumps felt like my eyeballs were going to pop out of my head.

Living in Los Angeles the freeways and streets are terrible, so I was in the market to get new shocks to help with the ride. I ended up getting the Bilstein 5100s. I got the adjustable height front strut and eliminated the ready lift under strut 2” spacer. I kept the truck level and set at the 2” lift position.

I also installed Cognito tubular upper control arms. I was thinking about lifting in the future, so it made sense to install at the same time. I ditched the  275/65/18 DuraTrac tires and got 295/70/18 Atturo Trail Blade XT (I’d be happy to give initial thoughts on these tires,

I have about 1,000 miles on them now). They are about a 34.5” tire but only about 11.5” wide. Separate topic of course.

These shocks have GREATLY improved the ride quality of the truck on both street and highway. I would highly recommend these shocks if you are in the market. Best bang for the buck.

I have driven about 1,000 miles of combined city/highway and they are worth every penny. Even my wife has noticed how much smoother it drives.

If  you have any questions about the shocks or tires I’m here to help!

I have changed out to 5100's in all of my past vehicles and I have always noticed a big improvement in ride. I have no complaints on my current ride on my 19 HC after the Rough Country rear shocks that were installed with my lift. Once they go I'll be doing the 5100's.

Hard to tell if it's more shock or more tire since you installed them at the same time.

Good point. It could be a combo of the two. I think it’s mainly the shocks though since the tires are rated LT, and filled to about 50 psi.

Did you go with the N3 or the monotube?

That I'm unsure of as the last time I bought them was for my 2009 Tahoe, I'll assume Monotube.

Why so high?

Max is 80 psi. I could run them down a little but I load the bed often. Rides well, I’m actually surprised. They also make less noise than the duratracs I had too.

So all you have is 2" front lift and you fit 295 70 18s?

That is correct. I didn’t go with a 35x12.5R18 because I wasn’t sure if it was going to rub on the UCA and I didn’t want to trim anything. Turning lock to lock nothing touches. I think you could run a 35, it would just be SNUG. I am basing it off the UCA I have as well.

I can update with pictures later.

Hey guys - I just got my 5100's (front and rear) today, pretty exited about getting them installed.   I noticed the front (24-309509) don't have rubber boots, and the rears appear to have a hard plastic cover vs a rubber boot.   just making sure they shipped the right parts.

You have the correct parts. Fronts have the boot inside the spring. You won’t be disappointed.

Thanks for the replies, looking forward to the install tomorrow morning.

Install done, for sure an improvement.  Settles a bunch of the bunny hop tendencies and makes potholes more bearable.  Feels more planted on corners for sure.  The ultimate test for me is the highway road-to-bridge seam, on a curve.  That's usually where it feels a bit dicey.  set to 1.1 setting in the front and it's leveled out nicely.   Really happy with how this turned out, thinking about putting 35"s on these wheels now.

    • I have A 2020 1500 5.3 8 speed. LTZ. Transmission problems since 60,000 miles. Started when I go to store in morning to get my morning coffee before work leave truck running get back in put it in drive/ rev no movement step on gas a little slams into gear. Put in neutral step on gas little shake then put in gear and gose.  Shut truck off start .. ok now at stop light stop truck after a few seconds feel a little kick if that doesn’t happen stuck in 3/4 gear shut truck off wait few seconds and start usually ok again. If you down shift manually ok as long as you get into 1st before stop. If not it kicks . I WANT A NEW TRANSMISSION. Now I want a new truck it just hit 80,000 IDK IF ILL BUY CHEVY CAUSE THEY STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM AND REFUSE TO RECALL . Oh I’ve changed the fluid and filter 3 times now. And yes used mobile 1 not ac/delco cause it’s not meeting the requirements that mobile is did use ac/delco filter
    • Of course refrain from political debate but I myself have very dismal hope for what is all going on up here every where we turn so I nodded my head when I saw this joke.
    • I'm looking at carpal tunnel surgery on my left hand and lumbar fusion.
    • While waiting for parts I have been working on installing the AC compressor, new accumulator, and orifice tube. Also changed out the high side ball valve (original). The orifice tube that was in there wasn't too bad. Slightly dirty, a little bit of junk, but not blocked. Glad I changed it out.   The accumulator, which should have been a 5 minute job, may have just burned $50. Put some PAG in it, wrote the date and mileage on the side, fresh o-rings and gooey'd up the threads and rings with Nylog. Got everything connected and snugged and was going to vacuum down the system, and....   My manifold gauge won't fit on the port. It's not an R12 service port. It LOOKS like an R134 service port but the diameter is a hair too large. There's a sticker on the accumulator that says it's designed to be used with R12 and R134a systems only. So it's not R1234yf. Even if I reduced the diameter slightly with a file, the shoulder on the port is too large so the quick-connect valve won't lock on. I'm stumped. It's going back, and 50/50 on if they'll give me a refund.   Also, I did a fuel pressure test.... Key on, the gauge spikes to about 60psi and quickly bleeds off, like 2psi per second. The fuel isn't going into the plenum, no smell, starts fine, so I'm guessing there's a bad check valve in the pump and the fuel is just draining back into the tank. oh, hell. But, it shouldn't be a problem, pump primes just fine and the truck starts right up. It just means I can't really ever use fuel pressure to verify a leak at the injector or intake.
    • Got this yesterday out of nowhere. Truck is a 25',6.6 gasser with 8k miles.  Only semi anomaly is that the truck had been sitting, uncranked for 6 days. Elec Stability Control showed immediately upon cranking, not while driving. No drivability issues, just the message. Battery didn't seem to be weak when cranking over.  I drove it, killed it, let it sit a few hrs with no avail.  Truck is 100% stock. No damage.
