Correct TPMS Sensors

He called some tech support with their learning tool, and they said they can't program the new trucks, and that they are waiting for a software update for their tool in order to program the new trucks.

 

Left there, went to the GM dealer, and their relearn tool wouldn't even communicate with the schrader TPMS sensors that discount tire installed.  He recommended I recontact discount tire, to see if they still have the original sensors and get them back from them, because I may need to rebuy original ones.  Its been a couple days, I doubt they hung on to them, but I have called and they are looking.

 

I'm stuck and at a loss of what to do.  How do I get these dang TPMS sensors to learn to the truck?

 

 

Put the original sensors back in and drive the truck.  They will auto learn.

I'm definitely curious about that.

 

My read is that the truck will each sensor ID / location each time it is driven after the the 20 or so minutes of stationary time. 

I'd guess someone figures at least 20 minutes is required to rotate tires?

 

I don't have a '22.5 truck to do any trials.

I do have a teach tool that I use when swapping winter / summer tires.  (winter rims are take-offs with GM sensors)

 

If I was to get a 'refreshed' 1500, I would like to be able to continue to run the same winter rims/tires -- without having to change to a newer sensor.

I can confirm that the new auto learns will NOT program to a 2019-2022 pre refresh.  The tools will recognize the sensors and if I remember right, they did beep the horn but immediately lost pairing.  We found this out when we got a set of 2021 Tahoe takeoffs to put on a used 2020 Silverado we had.  The Tahoes also use the new auto learn sensors.  

 

The service manual does still show the tool as being an option.  I will have to try it later if I have time.

As I stated, I had the original sensors on, I guess I also should have said, I drove around for a day, it did not relearn anything, I took it back the next day and they changed the sensors to new ones they have.  Clearly those don’t work either.  I did get 3 of the original sensors back from them yesterday, as that is all they could find, so I would need to buy another one.  Not sure what to do at this step, as I am not sure what discount tire will think if I go and ask them to change them back again, especially when it didn’t seem they were working the first time.

Do your new aftermarket wheels have dual valve stem holes?  Typically many do to mount the sensor on the inside of the wheel and have one just for air on the outside.  

 

I would still get 4 OE sensors.

They do not have dual valve stems.  I ordered a OE tpms sensor, took all of them back to discount and they reinstalled them.  I have the Amazon tpms reset tool, which I tested before they were installed, and it worked.  So then I put the truck in learning, and it did All of them except for the last one, the rear drivers side.  I know they are supposed to auto learn, but auto learning doesn’t appear to work.  Manually resetting them with a tool, and putting the truck in learning mode was working until the last one,  just my luck that one is probably broken or something.  I’m gonna have to take it to GMC and have them try.

2022.5 refresh Silverado RST 3.0L I was given part number 13542523 sensors new from my dealer. online it shows both these and 13533166 are the same sensor. I just drove 70 miles and they still have not relearned. The truck sat for maybe a hour before i left the shop and for several hours leaving before leaving my parents house.  I do have the summer tires in the bed. could that interfere with the relearn prosses?

Yes, move them away from the truck and then do the relearn.

If it can still 'see' the ones it last learned it has no reason to try and detect others. 

 

In any case, taking 'em (even temporarily) is an easy test.

      There was talk over the last couple of years that the contract to build these trucks between GM and International would not be renewed.  International moved production of all their other trucks besides the companion CV model out of the Springfield plant some time ago when they opened their San Antonio plant.  That left Springfield only building the Silverado Medium Duty, International CV Series, and some Express/Savanna long wheelbase cutaways.  International also put the plant up for sale some time ago.  This all answered my earlier question as to why GM and International did nothing with these trucks since they were introduced, as they had basically become a market 'placeholder' with a finite life.    The Silverado Medium Duty/International CV trucks were interesting combination of a GM powertrain, electrical system, and K2XX Silverado cab with an International chassis that was supposedly designed for a step-van type vehicle they never produced.  They were manufactured in International's Springfield plant along with the IH MV series initially.  When first introduced, there was much talk that the Silverado Medium Duty/CV would eventually get a gasoline engine option along with other upgrades and GM and IH would work on a class 6/7 joint venture truck.  This was before VW bought Navistar out, after that happened no more was said.  Draw your own conclusions...   About the time talk started that the GM/IH joint venture was not going to be renewed, rumors started that GM would develop a new line of medium duty trucks themselves.  The story is the new trucks will be part of the next generation HD's due in 2028, and will still feature a 'straight rail' chassis design that the current medium duty has.  GM views this as a desirable feature that differentiates their truck from the competition.  A gasoline engine option is also expected.  As the current Silverado Medium Duty remains in production until September 2026 and there is still a lot of inventory available do not expect any official word for some time.   I believe GM remains committed to their successful partnership with Isuzu, and all the LCF models will still be available from Chevy Commercial dealers.  Isuzu is on the cusp of opening a new large plant in South Carolina and there is also speculation that this may result in new product for both Isuzu and Chevy Commercial dealers.

      I have a 2026 2500 HD Ultimate. My phone app says there’s a software update available. It’s something about improved battery management and something to do with the running boards. I follow the instructions for the update but the “Check for Updates” option is greyed out in my settings menu. Has anyone else seen this? How did you resolve it? The help message just says “see your dealer” if the download doesn’t work. I’m just trying to save a trip.

      Fuel mileage?  That's all how you use your right foot.  Exhaust will give you sound.   Stock exhaust 5.3 is 2.75" diameter piping.     If the truck is nice and worth putting some $$ into it, I'd go for a Corsa catback.  I had one on my 2019 old body 5.3 and it was just perfect.  Zero drone, just driving around and cruising on the highway you'd think it was stock, but when you opened it up it was like a Camaro with the factory dual mode.  Corsa bumps their catback to 3in diameter.
