Cargo Light Switch

It is a shame there is no way to know it is on by looking at the switch. Same with 4X4 - when you put it on nothing tells you it is on other than the tiny little light on the knob.

They keep the park assist button illuminated by default (on)... which makes no sense. that should be illuminated when turned off only. All the other should be illuminated when turned on.

Anyone else notice they changed the cargo light switch's icon? (see pic below)

it is a getting towed button

you can turn it on in a 14 at any speed.. you just have to slide it into nuteral and the light fires right on.. lol.. i love finding work arounds haha

Great tip! My '03 would turn on no matter what. Always liked keeping tabs on what I was hauling at the time.

I agree that not being able to use it while moving is dumb. Everytime I put my sled in the back and want to check on it at night I have to put it in neutral. I'm sure it's an easy fix and I'll get around to it eventually.

Clearly they changed their mind!

"The cargo lamp provides more light in the cargo area of the vehicle, if needed. The lights inside of the pickup box also turn on, if equipped.

Notice: This switch DOES NOT illuminate when the lights are turned ON. If the lights are inadvertently left ON, with the ignition OFF, for an extended period of time, excessive battery discharge may occur.

Press the switch down to turn the cargo lamp ON or OFF. The shift lever must be in the P (Park) position to operate the cargo lamp."

Just went out to check my cargo light switch and it lights up when depressed. 12-11-2013 build. This site is soooooo great I have learned more about my 2014 Sierra here than I could have by studying the Manual for a week LOL. I put a bedrug and a tonneau cover on mine the other day and had never checked out the bed after dark, so I popped the tailgate down a minute ago with the cargo light on and the under bed rail lighting is really cool I love it. These trucks are awesome. I think that I might be a bit upset if I had an early model where the switch does not light up. It does show that GM is making continuous improvements lets hope that it continues. I want a full size V8 355 hp truck that gets 50 mpg maybe they will do that next instead of just messing with the switches?? :fingersx:

Mine was an early build that did not have a light in the switch. Once the dealer started getting trucks in with switches that did have lights, I asked them to upgrade mine. They looked up the part number and confirmed it was the same, i.e., it was a running production change, so they upgraded mine for free. I think someone already mentioned that if you leave the cargo light on it will automatically turn off when you go into reverse or drive. It also shuts off after about 20 minutes (I think) to prevent battery drain.

I have learned there is definitely an advantage to establishing a relationship with the service department at your dealer. They did a good job on the free scheduled maintenance that came with the truck, so I've been paying them to do the service since. Would they have done a free switch upgrade for anybody? I don't know, but they did it for me. Good luck with yours.

Several ways...

1- on my '14 Silverado, there is a silver sticker on the driver's door frame (look right and down) that shows the month and year. This is the sticker that has tire size, pressure, etc. (not the upper yellow one).

2- on the frame under driver side, there are some stickers that show frame build dat which will get you close.

3- the BEST way I found is to send a PM to the GM Customer Service person on the forum with your VIN and ask them for a "build sheet" which also has all of the RPO codes and their meanings.

4- my salesman gave me a copy of the build sheet/ inventory sheet as well.

One of these methods should help

Same here, my '03 was great, had many updates over early models but fit in with newer models until '07. Any other brand I borrowed or rented did not have that handy little cargo button.

The flatbed switch is now a collectible . Don't let the dealer change it.
