I may be in the minority here but I love that opening as a hand hold for hopping in the bed.

I agree. I use them all the time for that same thing.

It's crazy these trucks don't come with that.  The front ones are covered.

But yeah . . . they'll go down flat.

The front ones are covered but if you want to use them they are scored and can be cut out with a utility knife.

As others have said the back ones are open because they are handholds for use with the corner bumper step.

I have the back fillers installed since I have a tonneau and I can tap them down with my hand easily.  If I take the tonneau off and want the pockets open I can get my fingernail or a small tool under the lip of the plug and pop them out.  I bought mine from the original designer who owns the patent.  He laser-scanned the openings so the fit is perfect (there are cheap knockoffs out there that don't fit as good):

I would like to find a set of these that are spring loaded. Keep the junk out AND hand hold when needed!

I usually keep a small can of bug dope in one side just in case I forgot it and am already in the woods.  I Always use them to grab onto as well, or stick a fishing rod in if we are bank fishing.

I mounted a Derale 13005 above the secondary battery tray for a remote trans fluid filter. Also gutted and plugged the trans thermostat. Going to drop the stock pan and weld a 3/8" bung and plug this weekend.

Used $18 CDN Amazon TPMS tool to teach the new pressure sensors in my winter rims. Worked great!

He probably meant to program the new sensors to the truck.
