I see GM is still doing the band aid solution. I had my 11 Chevy Silverado and at 42k replaced piston rings, etc. Brutal.

how well did the motor last after the dealership did the repair

When the oil was changed did they add the full 8.5 quarts or could they only have filled it with 6 like the old 5.3? Just wondering out loud here.

That' a definite possibility.

 

OP check your service papers, see if they have how many quarts they listed on the last oil change they did.

I had two trucks and one car with similar oil problems. First one was a used 94 Z28 one quart every 2500 miles from 10k miles to 130k when I sold it. Never any other problem except I had to put new cats on at 60K. Next was a 1999 Ford 150- 4.6 engine same one quart every 2500 miles dealer said was with in range. At 20k put Vortec S/C on it traded at 110k no problems. Last and worse bought on ebay 1992 super clean hot rod p/u 383, whipple all the goodies 3 years ago. One quart every 500 miles, no smoke no plugs no problems put 10k miles on it so far cant believe it. Your lucky they didn't fill it and said drive it to see how much oil it consumes. If it falls within their specs and later blows from being run low on oil its on you. It use to say in the manuals to check oil every gas fill up, so that would be every 3 to 400 miles.

Seemed Ok, I sold the truck and now have a 14 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman

I haven't heard of any major epidemic of these new engines consuming oil, yet. Hopefully it stays that way and this was just an eff-up by some tech at the dealer.

I was driving my 2014 Sierra today and just about a block away from the dealership where I bought it the low oil warning came on - I did a WTF!? And pulled into the dealership where they checked the oil and determined it was down 3 quarts. I am 6,000 miles between oil changes (ironically, I was going to sch'd an apt. for a change today) with roughly 16,000 miles on the truck. The guy at the dealership informed me that GM considers 1 quart per thousand miles acceptable (he does not). They topped off the oil and I sch'd an apt. to have the oil changed and the truck checked out next week. Needless to say, I'm not feeling good about this...

So i got my truck back a few weeks ago. It seems to be running fine. They repaced the valve lifter oil manifold, intake gasket, valve cover gasket, pvc, and some of he spark plugs since they were burning oil. the technician figured the cylinders were fine since it was such a new truck. I am still worried that when the truck has 80 plus thousand miles in the future that the rings and cylinder will fail from this

Hey countertop.... wouldn't drive your truck that way.when mine did this all the oil was up in the valve cover and not going to the cylinders that get shut off when it is in 4 cylinder

Unfortunately, I have no choice but to drive it, as my job depends on it. I have read elsewhere that GM has a design flaw with that automatic valve shut off and that it's a problem in all their vehicles with that system and what you're describing sounds like the issue. They've had 3 or 4 recalls on this truck already but not for something this substantial....

      We did 250 on our tractors until we switched to Amsoil. We doubled after that.

      When I was there, most to all did not have an hour meter. They just did 5000 miles on regular vehicles and 3000 on police stuff. The modern oil change monitors should take into account engine hours, weather, etc. I don`t use the monitor on my stuff. I pull the stick, look at it, smell it, rub it between my fingers, etc. That`s my oci.   I have had many engines. Some bracket race. No problems doing things my way. I was in the mechanic business for 30 yrs or so. I still do things the old school way. Don`t care who laughs at me.   Understand, I was in the main shop. We didn`t do oil changes or tires. We had a service station for that. I don`t remember the hours they used for tractors, lawn mowers, etc. Something in my head says 250 hours.

      I don't know how far back vehicles had hour meters, be it driver accessible or diag accessible but was wondering if there was any rule of thumb your shop came up with in regards to an hour limit on engine oil regardless of the miles on the oil.    I know with construction or farm equipment its almost always based on engine hours for maintenance scheduling as no other metric really applies other than a seasonal time limit that one self imposes on items like engine oil.

      I'm not sure what to say on that mess but I will say that is an odd thing for that mechanic to speculate on as per assuming its been run out of oil a few times as the odds of that engine having instead piled up with a complete seizure would be very high if such events had actually taken place. However there is nothing saying that the oil has ever been changed although once again, what filter was on that engine as that would tell part of the story if its possible to figure out if its a factory installed filter or not. Too many items unknown and a lot of speculation, but regardless of that its one fubared mess that is mind boggling to see for a vehicle that new and its hard to imagine how it ever made it that far in life looking at the top of the engine.    His scanners, I've watched him before here and there and I'd have to say if I recall correctly that some of his scanning equipment is one or two steps up from a child's Exo Sketch 😋

      I agree. That`s a LOT of sludge for 12,000 miles. I tossed that out here since this is an OCI thread. There`s tons of people here that do not post.   I used to work on a city fleet. That includes police cars and fire trucks. Lesson is, not to only use the odo for oci. A police car has a ton of hours on the engine for the miles it shows. And, not just idling, directing traffic. They beat on these things.   Course, since it is a Kia, they were gonna use the "100,000 mile warranty" for their OCI.😉
