8 inch subwoofer behind rear seat or under front passenger seat?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I have looked everywhere and got some great info but can not find anyone who has installed a slim 8inch subwoofer behind the rear seat or under the passenger seat. I have a 2015 crew cab non Bose and my passenger seat is not power so I have some room.

The Rockford P3SD48 P3 Punch Shallow mount 8-Inch DVC 4-Ohm Subwoofer I got only needs .40 cu ft per manufacture recomendations. So a pretty small sealed or ported box will do it.

I got a Alpine MRV-M250 to power it. I'm going to run 4 awg marine power wire from my second battery and it should let me up the amp to 500w if this 8 inch does not cut it.

As far as connections I'm pretty good to go but I'm looking for help with the placement of the sub box and would love to get everyone's thoughts. Not looking for a lots of bass just to help the sound quality out some.

Will there be enough room for a box behind the back seat? Per manufactures site, minimum would be .25 cu ft(minus woofer displacement of .040) for that speaker you listed if you're really tight for room. Crutchfields list the cu ft from .20 - .70 cu ft.

http://www.rockfordfosgate.com/products/details/p3sd4-8

Sealed Box Volume (Vb): 0.25 cu. ft. (7.0 Liters)
Vented Box Volume (Vb): 0.75 cu. ft. (21.2 Liters)

I have both front seats powered, so I can't tell how much room you have under there. But, there is a box wizard on RF site so you can get an idea of what the minimum dimensions would be to meet the .25 cu ft for sealed.

Don't feel either of these locations have sufficient space for a good musical sounding enclosure. Under rear seat will have enough space for a properly sized and tuned enclosure.

You can definitely fit the sub under the rear passenger seat. I have a 12 inch shallow Rockford sub behind the passenger seat of my '16 regular cab and the amp under the passenger seat. With the shallow being so small it didn't interfere with the seat itself.

I agree with under the rear passenger seat. But with a CC or DC, from what I've seen, the seats are basically against the back of the wall. I saw a video of a guy removing the rear seats in his DC, and it's flat against the wall. Same with my '17. I really wish there was room behind my DC rear seats, I would be putting my speakers there if I could so I don't waste the space under the seat for storage.

Yeah behind the seat you won't fit anything. You can can have both storage and a subwoofer. Somewhere in this forum I saw someone cut the GM storage bin right before it gets to the subwoofer.

Yup, saw that thread as well. I'm going a similar route. But, I'm going to do fiberglass on the speaker enclosure and probably even do the storage as a fiberglass, so it forms with the floor better.

Can confirm, you will not be able to fit it behind the rear seat, only under, folded up the seats look like they have room but when the seat is folded down the back is on the wall. Amps will fit but no sub

Ah you are right the updated advisory is for a sub displacement of .040 cu ft for sub displacement not enclosure size. Thanks for opening my eyes to this!

Thanks for the picture you have saved me some time today. I was planing to pull the single seat to do just that, fold it up and see how much room I had. Looks like my only option may be the front seat.

Thanks for all the great info everyone. I will be working on this today and will make sure to post pictures and results of what happens. At the moment it looks like the rear seat option is out so I may try the front seat. I also got a nl4 connector so I can quickly disconnect it if I do end up having to go under the rear seat at lest I can take it out but that would be disappointing. What have I got to lose other then some time. I'm trying to avoid under the rear seat since my large dog ends up occupying the back pretty often when I'm going to and from our river lot and pulling the rv.

I have a good bit of mdf so I'm going to play around with enclosures may try and port it as well but it looks like sealed should work for my needs. My degree and experience is in acoustical engineering so I should be able to tell if it sounds bad....I hope ? Coming from $500,000 line array speakers I get to use at work my truck sounds.........eh at best anyways just trying to improve it some. Next I will be focusing on the speakers.

I would probably try making prototypes with cardboard then transfer the pattern to your MDF. Seen people do that in the audio forum when doing their box design.

Good luck and looking forward to your speaker design.

That's what I did for my mdf/fiberglass box
