So the diagnosis for this problem is high oil level and fuel smell?

Yeah, when I first noticed it there was extremely strong gas smell when you removed the oil cap on the valve cover.  Oil level was way above full mark.  All this about 1 month after dealer oil change.  My oil cap still smells like gasoline, but not as strong as before.

Just throwing this out there. Are you guys making a lot of short trips? The oil might not be getting hot enough to burn it off. I have the same problem, oil level is higher then max. Its been very cold for what feels like two months, I live 10kms from work. Coolant hasn't even hit operating temp by the time I get there.

 

Dealership recommends going for the occasional drive. Ideally towing/hauling something, put the engine under some load and get it working.

In my case this did start back in the December-January time frame when the temps were in single digits.  However it has been running in the 50's and 60's lately.  My daily commute is about 10 miles one way, so the engine and fluids do get up to temp, but I agree short tripping could be an issue.  However, I owned a 14 Silverado with the 5.3 and never experienced anything like this with the same drive and circumstances.  I'm still thinking I have a bad injector.  About another week or so I'm going back in.

I mean, all oils I have changed in every vehicle I owned have had a slight fuel smell in the oil. Its just the nature of a gasoline engine. I'm just gonna drain some oil out and be done with it. It seems like a non issue for me. I have the powertrain warranty for 5 yrs/100,000 miles anyway. So if it does fail, it will be on Chevy.

The first time I went to check my oil level, it was crazy high.......called my dealer in a panic, and they asked if the engine was warmed up fully.  I said "No, I'm used to being able to at least check it cold vs NOT (norm operating temp). They're different, of course, but still doable."  They said I HAVE to run them and check at NOT, which I've never heard of before. 

 

So now I check it at NOT, but I'm curious as to whether everyone is doing that, and also why it makes such a huge difference in these engines?

Your used oil will always have a scent of gasoline. Especially in these DI motors I find. I keep hearing "add oil, and catch-can it because it pumps it into the intake." Yet I have never added oil between changes, nor did I find any oil, or oily film for that matter in the intake when I installed my CAI. Yes they will make oil disappear if you rod on it or there is a problem. But if you are loafing around, occasionally hitting 3,000rpm you should not be having oil consumption problems. As far as gas washing pistons, it is real and this is what killed my 800 Poolaris last round. Considering GDI was a non issue with the LS family, I can't see it washing pistons on the new LT family. There were no major changes to fuel delivery between engine families if I am correct.

Hmmmm.....Seems to be exactly opposite of what is cited in owner's manual.

 

"Follow these guidelines:
. To get an accurate reading, park
the vehicle on level ground.
Check the engine oil level after
the engine has been off for at
least two hours. Checking the
engine oil level on steep grades
or too soon after engine shutoff
can result in incorrect readings.
Accuracy improves when
checking a cold engine prior to
starting. Remove the dipstick
and check the level.
. If unable to wait two hours, the
engine must be off for at least
15 minutes if the engine is
warm, or at least 30 minutes if
the engine is not warm. Pull out
the dipstick, wipe it with a clean
paper towel or cloth, then push it
back in all the way. Remove it
again, keeping the tip down, and
check the level."

 

Fortunately, mine has been fine, but only at 4500 miles.  I found these instructions 'different' than any other vehicle I have had.  Vehicles were something I had always checked hot, but not this truck.

I have always checked my oil level cold in every vehicle, motorcycle, quad, lawnmower, etc I have ever owned.  I want all the oil back in the oil pan so that is why I check it cold.

Drained out the excess oil. Took like 15 minutes. We will see how she does from here.

Just got mine back from the dealer. Tech said" no fuel in crankcase" also said " Due to the high vacuum in the crankcase of this motor, If fuel were present in the oil it would throw a rich code on the ECM and turning on the CEL" No repairs were made.

Now I have a dash cam installed they left the key in the whole time it was in the shop, they never popped the hood. Aside from that as far as I know the only way an ecm detects a rich condition is if the o2 sensors see it. Am I wrong there?

That’s the biggest line of BS I’ve probably ever heard.

You are right in that the o2 sensors would have to see the rich condition for the ECM to throw a code but but I think that’s exactly what the tech is saying. I have never heard that crankcase fuel vapors would be enough to actually make a rich condition though.

Hi KD5FPV I know exactly where you are coming from I have been fighting with GM for over a year now with this problem and I think they have no idea how to fix it so they just keep denying there is a issue and they hope you will go away or get fed up and trade it off.Last year when it filled up I kept on changing the oil to save the motor now after a year of this I am just driving it and letting it fill up with gas.  After the last repair and a fresh oil change within  700 kilometers or about 400 miles it has gone more then a inch over full and finally turned on a check engine light the dealer had no time to look at it last week so I take it in on Monday to see what kind of excuse they will try to come up with this time .

I had this exact same problem on a hyundai sonata. I had to have the block replaced, probably from this issue, and me not realizing gas was getting into the oil. they had the car for about a month. When I got it back I thought I better check the oil after about a week of driving when I saw that the reading was to high. Went back the the dealer saying there is to much oil in there. They looked and put it on a lift. Came back to me and said there was something wrong with the pcv valve, or something in the system. It was replaced. I didn't feel safe with that car any more so I traded it in on a Toyota Tacoma.

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.

    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
