Heads up and check your oil level (UPDATED)

No there is a regular electric low pressure pump in the tank.  The HPFP sits on top of the engine near where the distributor would have been on the old small block chevy engines.  It is a mechanical pump for the direct injection and runs off a special lobe on the cam.  The failure of the internals of this pump are what allowed gasoline to get into the engine.It should be made of fairly durable stuff, you would hope, as it is capable of injecting the fuel at over 2000 psi.

The pump in the tank is a lift pump. The HPFP is under the intake manifold. Direct injection engines have 2 pumps. One to get fuel from the tank to the secondary pump(HPFP), and one for injection pressure.  Sorry if this doesn't make much sense.. I'm a few beers in.. 

 

Side note. Just got my truck back from the 2nd dealer. They swapped the HPFP again. Time will tell.

Oil level is rising it is now about 1/2" above top notch on the dip stick and I do have a gasoline smell. I will drop by my local dealership next week and see what they say.

I wish my dipstick was shiny like that 

Mines a dark almost black metal finish which makes it hard to even see the oil level.

Just had my first oil change and I noticed the oil level is well above hash marks.  Maybe 1/2 inch or so.  No gas smell just an observation.

I wish some of the oils were darker because some are so clear you can't see see them on the dipstick...

Totally agreed......I was wondering if I could polish some of the dark surface off to leave it shinier that would show the oil more clearly.

This $64,350.00 MSRP Truck has 15,000 miles on it. I dropped it off at dealership this morning and they called and said that they have ordered a replacement HPFP because it was leaking gas into the crankcase. They did not want me to drive it so I left it there for repair and got a loaner car. 17's only have a 60,000 mile factory powertrain warranty!  I think that any vehicle that has this "engine damaging"  issue should automatically be assigned a GM extended warranty on the engine to at least 100k miles!  I am convinced that the longevity of the internal parts bearing/piston rings/cam bearings lobes etc have been negatively affected, I just do not know to what extent. 

It is a PITA to reach the oil dipstick but I will check it at every fuel up from here forward. Plus on my next oil change an oil sample will be sent to a lab for analysis. Dnt: you’re truck has been fine until now? I only have 1900 miles on my 2018. Guess I’ll have to start smelling my oil instead of the usual wipe and check...

Sounds all to familiar.  I'm hoping lightning doesn't strike me twice and that this is a rare thing.  As far as butt dyno is concerned I can't tell any difference after mine was repaired.  If there's any internal damage it isn't showing up in oil usage, noise, etc.  My truck was around 11K when it happened to me.  I agree GM should step up the powertrain warranty on these trucks.  

 

Good luck with getting her buttoned up and this being a part of your truck's HISTORY.  By the way if yours is like mine even though they replace the pump and change the oil, it's still going to have a gasoline smell for quite a while.  I drove mine a 100 miles after the pump replacement and returned because the gas smell was so strong again.  They changed the oil again.  I guess the internals and crevices of  the engine had enough gasoline in it to smell up the first oil change???  Still has some gasoline smell, but nothing like at first.  Just a heads up in case that happens with you.

I know the oil level was good a few weeks back when I checked it (maybe 3 to 4 weeks ago)  It was raining cats and dogs Tuesday when I picked it up from the dealership and then it was too dark yesterday afternoon when I got home from work to check the oil level. I just checked it a few minutes ago and it is about 1/2' above the full level on the oilstick. However since I did not check it at the dealership I am not 100% sure that they did not "overfill" it when they changed the oil? Still smells strongly of gasoline but that could be residual? I am not taking any chances,. I set an appointment to go back in tomorrow morning and have them check it. Maybe they can drain a bit out and I can keep an eye on it for a few days, or maybe there is another issue that needs to be resolved....................... I am waiting on a call from GM corporate to discuss with them about providing free oil changes and oil analysis up to 60k miles and a free extended warranty up to 100k. Silly engine could be chewing itself up inside and there is no way to know without oil analysis or a total engine tear-down.

Remember that GDI engines WILL normally get fuel past the rings and into the crankcase. Just because you can smell gas on the oil cap and on the dipstick does not mean you have a problem. A rising oil level however does indicate a problem. Make sure to be consistent on when you check it too; fully warmed up like after at least 15-25 miles and always level.

Right, it is normal to smell a little gasoline, but if what happened to mine happens to you, you'll know.  Son has a direct injected 2.0 Subaru.  Same deal, slight smell of gasoline.  So don't make that the "test."  but as 17 Sierra said, a rising oil level means something is going on.  I imagine what happened to me is going to happen to an unbelievably small number of trucks, and probably not to you.  BUT doesn't hurt to keep an eye on things.  Good luck to everybody out there.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
