Stock Brakes Replacement- Wagner vs AC Delco vs other?

Recommended Posts

looking for a little guidance...I have tried to do quite a bit of research, but haven't really found a convincing direction for my breaks...I have 69k miles on my truck...and breaks are acting up a bit...nothing crazy, but they need a little attention at least...and I am concerned that the little issue will turn big quickly...

I am not looking to go crazy on an upgrade, as far as I can tell the stock brakes are fine for me...(unless the upgrade cost is minimal)...basically I have come across Wagner (I think most chains like Firestone/Hibdon, etc.) install these...but also have seen quite a bit of AC Delco professional (dealers and independents install these-it seems).

1) for just OEM replacement brakes/rotors, is there a noticeable difference between Wagner and AC Delco or other? (or feel free to throw out other options?)

2) I have read a few reviews of people regretting they turned their rotors...what are the thoughts there, just skip the turn and buy new ones?  or was that a small sample size of reviews I saw?

please let me know your thoughts...thanks in advance!

Curious too - I've got 97k and running stock brakes 100%, except for Amsoil brake fluid.

I had been looking at Wagner OEx pads and rotors for when it comes time to replace.  Interested what others have to say on the Wagners.

FYI, there is a huge difference between ACDelco parts and ACDelco Professional parts, the "professional" are junk. made in china, the OEM stuff is mostly made in the USA and Mexico.

I put the OEx pads on my son's Jeep and they have been fantastic.  Granted a totally different setup but I'd buy them again and have.

Kinda,

For stock feel and breaking go to the dealer and get atleast the PNs for the OEM pads/rotors. This is what i will be doing for my new truck when time comes.

Story Time; for my old truck i put EBC green stuff on the front, they would not bit unless i put some heat into them. swapped for EBC red stuff and they would grab really nice when cold and never had a problem towing.

I had a pucker factor of 8/10 while towing down a grade in 10-25mph traffic where my EBC green stuff faded. i thought by putting on one of the best brake manufacture pads i shouldn't have a problem but problem did occur. To be honest i was towing close to capacity.

That's weird, I ran various types of EBC pads in a rally car years ago cos my co-driver stocked them in his shop. The reds were a higher temperature & didn't bite from stone cold, greens worked from cold but could overheat & fade.

Wagner oex, Napa premium, Akebono or you could step up to a high performance metallic pad for some extra stopping power and less rotor warping. I'd recommend Napa reactive one rotors and their performance metallic pads for a decent upgrade with minimal cost. Only downsides are brake dust and if you're hard on them you might get some squeeking. If your towing or hauling a lot it's worth it.

AC Delco police package brake rotors are serious performers. I've had 2 K2s and the stock front rotors warped way too easy.

Use the police rotor and that problem goes away. There is a matching set of pads to go with them. Not a fan so much of that, tons of brake dust. But they're definitely better than regular fodder they sold from the showroom.

pads and rotors?  did you already turn rotors or skipping that step?

I have major heat rejection issues where I live and long hot grades etc.  I completely blew a AC delco pad out from middle of pad and subsequently ground the Quarter size are into the rotor....immediately swapped everything out with EBC Green Pads and High Carbon EBC slotted rotors.  Never looked back never a issues again or overheating etc. and no warped rotors either!  Do I have more dust?  Yes, but with green pads it's not that much more..

as far as I can tell, the pads are almost gone but the rotors are fine. IF they're bad(they are original, manufactured date was October 2013, purchased august of 2014) i'll replace them. 62k miles on my truck but I do a lot of downhill braking.

FWIW, when it comes time, I plan to just use the OEM stuff on mine. I've never had brakes last this long on any vehicle, so I figure- why mess with what works?
I'm at almost 82k miles and should get to 100k miles(or more) on the original stock pads. I'll just replace all the pads and rotors with OEM when the time comes.

OEM pads are fine, but the rotors are hit or miss I've done brakes on these trucks at under 50k numerous times because the rotors rusted out. I would recommend at least finding a better rotor to go with your OEM pads. Most GM truck brakes, since the gmt800, that fail prematurely is usually due to oxidizing rotors. Most quality ceramic pads will last 100k if the rotors hold up.
