Has anyone else used the AMSOIL OE ATF over the Signature Series in their 8 Speed? Any issues? Looking to get a flush done soon and want to make sure the fluid is compatible. I'd rather not shell out $300 CAD for the signature series when the OE will do.

If it’s not broke don’t fix it. There were all sorts of issues with this transmission until GM figured out which fluid to use. I’d stick with what GM recommends.

With the 8 speed and its fluid issues, the only thing I'd run is what GM calls for, Mobil 1 LV ATF HP with the Blue Label.  19417577.

Might be a silly question but the curiosity in me needs to know.  Did Exxon/Mobil create this blue label product at GM’s request or was it always around?   And LV = low ?  HP = High Performance?

Just had the TSB done on mine, Mobil 1 LV ATF HP with the Blue Label.  19417577.

 

Could not be happier.

Informed Opinion:

 

Fully grasp getting the TSB done.  When I dig into the chemistry of the  Mobil 1 LV ATF HP vs Amsoil Signature Series ATL the Amsoil is at least 50% PAO based while M1 ATF is  at least 60% highly refined petroleum.  The Viscosity Index ( VI )  is not that far apart but 157 for M1 LV HP vs 161 for ATL.   Mobil 1 is getting there by pour point depressants and viscosity index improvers ( polymers that will give up the ghost). Amsoil is relying on the very high VI base oil thats GRP IV not GRP III.  

 

That means over the life of the fluid the Amsoil is going to be more viscosity stable, more resistant to high and low temps . If the dealer buys me the Mobil 1 I would run it and test it.   It will be fine until the lower quality base oil and VI and PPD get stressed and by the temps my 8 speed runs that won't be long.

Not sure how I missed this post.  I try to keep on here and up to date but seems things slip by.

 

I have talked to other AMSOIL dealers and they have had customers that have switched over to AMSOIL's ATL fluid which is the Signature Series and are not having any issues. 

 

The difference in the OE fluid and the Signature Series is the base oil used.  That is why the OE is less expensive.  To me if you are going to service your transmission, and as often as you service it, just use the Signature Series and don't look back.  I feel that is why I have had great success with all my vehicles is because I switch them over to SS within the first 5k miles of owning them.  My 2019 Silverado didn't get switched over until 25k miles because I was hoping to be able to do it myself.  But ran out of time and wanted it down so I just had the dealer install it for me.

 

I understand warranty and that most want to follow GM's recommendations but would really like to find someone that is having the 8sp shudder early on and switch over to see how it turns out.

MY 2 cents on Amsoil OE trans fluid.

I did a drain and fill on our 19 Hyundai Santa Fe with Amsoil OE trans fluid. It holds 6.87 quarts. I got 4 quarts out on a drain. 

It shifts better and is smoother. 

I will stick with the OE line because I change fluids more often. Going to switch the motor oil to OE on the next change.

I have a 2019 AT4 with 5.3 V8 and the 8 speed transmission. Was having hesitation and surge at start up and rumble at 1500 rpms in the 52-57 mph range. Took the truck to the dealership and they did a flush and fill at 51k miles. Problem solved; I am now at 73k and the problem is back, though not as pronounced. I am switching over to Amsoil Signature ATF next Tuesday. I will keep this thread posted on how it goes/results. I have used Amsoil engine oil for decades but I am just an average guy with nothing tied to a brand. I will provide honest evaluation and feedback.

8 speed should have nothing other than the GM stuff in it, Mobil 1 LV ATF HP p/n 19417577.

How did the switch to Amsoil go?

 

I’ve got a 19 LTZ Z71 with same 5.3L/8 spd and had a flush at 56k using the updated fluid + a Valvoline additive which the dealer suggested.

 

I’m now at 78k miles and while better than before, I’m again noticing harder shifts in and out of 1st/2nd.

 

Also want to replace shocks/struts as I’ve had a pop from driver side since 32k miles which dealer hasn’t been able to diagnose after several tries.

 

Haven't wanted to throw parts at it but concerned I could also have a bad motor or body mount. Reading bad driver side motor mounts and transmission/lifter issues can all occur concurrently.

The switch to the Amsoil Signature ATF was completed and the problems with the transmission are gone. Obviously too soon to tell about the durability of the fix, but so far I am pleased. Truck smoothly shifts through gears upon brisk acceleration from stop to 73 mph and also smoothly accelerates from 73 to 85 when passing.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
