275/65/18 too small?

I'm running 275/65/18's with a 2" level kit in front, and 2" rear block in place of the factory 1.25" block. It's not an overly aggressive look, but looks much better than stock, IMO. I'm very happy with them. They're an LT tire, but in load range C. My average MPG and overall driving manners (acceleration, shifting, holding 6th gear on the highway, etc) haven't changed much at all. My avg MPG dropped by 1 MPG or less. You'll notice quite a change if you go to a 275/70/18, with your 5.3 and 3:08 gears. I don't have pics on my work computer, but you can check out my gallery if you want.

I totally agree,if these trucks (the 4wd ones) would just sit an 1" to 1.5" taller from the factory they would look so much better, whats worse is the Dodges, they sit so low they all look like 2wd trucks to me.

I thinking I'm taking this decision way too seriously

Ha',you shoulda' seen me when I was trying to make my final decision on what I wanted to do

Rod your truck is actually the first I saw with the 275. I actually photoshopped stock wheels onto your truck to get an idea haha. Your wheels IMO make a huge difference in the appearance. I'm really diggin your rig

Thank you. And yes, the wheels do make a big difference in the overall looks of the truck.

Yep, I agree. They should come with a stance like yours or mine from the factory, lol

I was the same way. To the OP, you're not taking it too seriously. It's important to get what you want, and be happy with it. Heck, it took me longer to pick out my wheels & tires than it did to pick out my new truck, haha

I have the 275/65's on stock suspension an its the way these trucks should have come from the factory. No rubbing at any suspension articulation point and alot better looking IMO.

I really did not notice much at all MPG consequence after having my tune updated with the 275 tire size. Anything more and you will notice especially if you go with a heavy LT tire.

Thanks to everyone for the input, it looks like I'm going to stick with the 275/65/18 to go along with my 2" level... (i think haha), i'll definitely post some pics once its done!

I cant imagine driving a truck with a 3:08 rear diff, Save some money and do a gear swap! then you can run any tire you want and it will also drive so much better if you go with a 3:73 it will feel like you added 30+ HP .. They shouldnt even make a fullsize pickup with anything less then a 3;42 or 3:73..

I have a 5 spd allison and 4:10.s and love it! I can be at 70-75 mph and still be under 2500 rpm with a 33" tire.. I cant even imagine how that feels with a 3:08.. do you tow with the truck?

nah i dont tow, the truck definitely isnt a rocket off the line, but apparently the 3.08 6 speed is equivelent to the 4 speed with a 3.42 (so i've heard, dont quote me on that) unfortunately when i saw the truck i got all school girl giddy and didnt check what gears it had in it. the newer trucks with the 5.3 only offer 3.08 and 3.42's. I'm really not looking to swap em out either, so i'm kinda stuck stickin with a smaller tire.

well i did some more searching and i found the exact setup (minus tire brand) that I'm looking for. this is not my truck but i have a black ext z71 as well. this guys truck has 275/65/18 with a 2 inch leveling kit, no blocks in the rear. I think it looks pretty good, how about you? also, i added a pic of my old truck, leveled 04 stepside with 285/65/16, just for sh!ts and giggles

Actually,I don't like the stance on that one,the reason......the front is higher than the rear,I hate that, mine was like that with the 1.5" leveling kit, thats why I added 1" lift blocks to the rear,to actually level it out!

I wasnt sure if that was just an illusion in the picture or what... i know the rear fender is 2 1/2 inches higher than the front when i measured my truck

bringin this topic back to life lol! i got a 2010 5.3 with the 3.08's too and i was lookin at going 275/70r18 but its about 13 pounds more per tire because i wanna go with the goodyear duratracs. im getting an afe drop in filter this year and an airaid MOT next year, also this summer goin with the flowmaster super 10 and im wondering if going up from the stock 265/65r18 michelin ltx m/s2 to the 275/70r18 duratracs is gonna be an awful decision. also i do alot of hunting up here in NY and its pretty hilly and i do a good bit of offroading so im wondering am i gonna just hurt myself doin this?

and itd be goin from a p to an lt tire. ive considered running these tires now to the wire and then getting a diablo trinity and swapping gears to 3.42 obviously front and rear. its just so damn expensive! oh you want bigger tires. well thatll cost 1k and you gotta regear+ get the truck tuned after you get gears in both diffs so basically spending 2k on rubber....sumbitch haha

The 275/70/18's will work really well, and look much better than the stockers....but you'll probably lose 2-4 MPG, depending on your driving habits. It will also hurt your acceleration (especially since you have the 3:08's). And just FYI, don't expect much improvement from the intake and exhaust...except for the sound.

How much MPG and acceleration loss do you think it would be with 275/65 with his setup?

Not much. Probably 1-2 MPG, if that. I'm running that size, but didn't have the stockers on long enough to know if it made any difference. However, my avg mpg is within 1-2 of my buddy's truck that's still running the 265/65's.

    • Late reply, but yes—it works on the SLT trim. Compatibility comes down to the plastic shroud shape behind your mirror, not the trim badge itself. On the SLT with auto-dimming, it uses a plug-and-play Y-harness off the mirror/rain sensor power, so no need to run wires down to the OBD port. If anyone's ever unsure about fitment, just drop a photo of your mirror housing and we can double-check it.   Appreciate the detailed feedback on the install! On the windshield glare—we actually took feedback like yours and developed a dedicated CPL (polarizer) filter to cut down dash reflections on sunny days. If you're still running the cam, shoot me a DM. I'd be happy to send a CPL filter over for you to test out—no charge.
    • There are no stickers in your glovebox?
    • Look at the numbers on the stickers in the door jam...
    • Yes, every time the developer updates his code, you must recompile. I will private message you with the latest because it changes pretty much with every version.
    • After I wrote that reply I went for a ride. 85 F out. So trans started at 85 F and it shifted the same as it did an hour latter at 168 F. I've never actually recorded the to cold to shift point but it is under 32 F before they start hanging on to a lower gear or leaving the converter unlocked. Both intended to heat fluid.    Yes, brake or bake. Absolutely.      Your welcome. True research ended decades ago. Field trials are still in play.    There is a thing called oxidation onset temperature. This is the heat related oxidation not the O2 exposure kind. For mineral oil that starts at 140 F. So what happens after 140 F? Each 20 F cuts fluid life in half! Does using a Full Synthetic improve that? Yes! By how much? Depends on the base oil type and a few other factors. But enough to notice. Some esters are even higher. There are even synergies between types the will raise it higher than any one component is alone.    Then there is "Hindered" oils. Antioxidant additives. Hindered Polyol Esters can sit at 500 F for years in a turbine.   When a blender brags his oil will 'take 500 F" in service he doesn't specify for how long. Water will dance on a 500 F hot plate for several seconds. @newdude put up a chart showing the relationship between fluid temperature and it's life in an automatic transmission. Here's a version of that chart for Group III based oils. These temperatures are those in the pan as observed as 'normal'. that is you drive as you do for as long as you do under what load you ask of it and whatever that temperature is this graph applies to. Flash temperatures of a few minutes isn't what his means.    Note that fluids held at a constant 240 F have a service life of only 20K miles. 220 F explains the factory exchange limit, eh? My equipment I keep under 180 F and I'm good if the cooler will hold it as low as 140 F. But that's me.
