Mine was built in November. Just bought Range V8 to shut off the AFM. Will keep you posted when I plug it in.

Received my Range 8 To disable the AFM. Man it makes a difference. No bells no whistles no warning lights. Works great and well worth the money. I was told it voids the warranty. I tell them, so does running the noisy POS into a tree. This way nobody gets hurt. I now have my truck back and not a wussy wagon.

I have 5.3 w/ 3.42 with 1100 miles on it and have never felt any unuasual vibs. could that be anything?

I spend 1hr a day on highway at 70-85.

Never felt any vibrations? Yeah I'd call that being one of the lucky ones.

Idk what to do my dealer says they can't feel the vibration but its still clearly there Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk

tell them to use the vibration tool they are supposed to have. it does not matter if they feel it or not. tell them to use their tools or find a dealer who has a service department with experience using the tool.

They put it on the tool the other day. Came back with 3 number 1 vibrations. Kept saying its a tire idk

I do know for a fact they have a new tool and it was held up over being developed and the software refined for frequencies involved in the Silverado line. GM replaced my truck because of delays in calibration, however it is my understanding that dealers should have these new tools now. I do not know if all dealers bought the new tool and calibrations but I do know it is out there. May also ask your dealer if they looked at the shear mounts on the cab - my neighbor had a random vibration and it turned out to be the shear mount was not assembled correctly.

So the dealer shops have a new driveline vibration diagnostic tool. Does this help them determine the corrective action necessary? Or does it just indicate a vibration issue?

From what the GM Engineer told me the tool indicates a frequency, they then take the frequencies they record and depending on the vehicle they have a guide to correct what those frequencies indicate. More or less it locates it and then they have a repair procedure to resolve it. My dealer had already ordered the new tool last fall but the tool was delayed and was awaiting final calibration from GM for the Silverado. My understanding however is the Engineers have the tool and some dealerships are receiving them. When my truck was diagnosed the time frame was undetermined but I have heard dealers are receiving them now.

I think my readings were around 20 hertz?? I could b wrong I'll check the papers out later once I get home

After properly inflating my tires (new one was at 20, rest were high 20's), the replaced tire seems to be helping quite a bit. It isnt perfect but it is much, much better. It is the Goodyears, gdad is spot on. Get the Michelins, I am holding out until they replace mine. I still get the weird little shimmies at odd speeds but nothing I cant live with compared to what I experienced.

 

I finally sense some hope.

After properly inflating my tires (new one was at 20, rest were high 20's), the replaced tire seems to be helping quite a bit. It isnt perfect but it is much, much better. It is the Goodyears, gdad is spot on. Get the Michelins, I am holding out until they replace mine. I still get the weird little shimmies at odd speeds but nothing I cant live with compared to what I experienced.

Mine had a tire road force over 40 and was replaced. My error was I only asked the dealer to check the rear tires and not the front as well at that time BC the vib was obviously in the rear. I almost had no vibes at all but after my first service, there's a vib again in the rear after the tire rotation. I have the LS2 20'S. I took it to the dealer and they went for a ride w me yesterday and now have an appt for a new tire again. Edited by 20Bowtie14

I feel that GM will just do a recall on the Good Years to put Michelins on. Expensive fix but better than pissing off loyal customers.

GM put 4 Michelins on my truck and I still have the vibration. Talked to the service manager and he says they no other fix right now. Still researching with GM. He also told me they were told to not use Michelins anymore. They are supposed to use continental now.

I find it amazing that GM has not officially admitted the vibration is an engineering fault, and come up with a solution given the growing chorus of owners of brand new trucks that have the symptoms. I have followed this post from the beginning, and feel strongly this is NOT a tire or wheel balancing issue...those issues only further exposé what is clearly a fault in the construction of the truck and or the systems the truck employs to reach the stated mpg, or noise reduction goals. This is a harmonic vibration which gets further exposed by any slightly out of round or out of balance tire. I too am dealing with the vibration, felt mostly from 72-80mph, or exactly the speed range for highway cruising. I have had not one but two road force balances with no sucess. Now that GM is in the headlines daily for the way they handled their ignition recalls, those of us experiencing this vibration issue, with no success from most dealers, or any official word from GM that it even exists, should consider pooling our collective opinions in a more official way and present them to GM publicly, and see if they respond. Otherwise, the Internet ( outside of this forum) is a powerful tool. Either way just posting my opinion, and suggesting given GM's current position they would be unwise to ignore a group of very unhappy owners of brad new trucks who have a collective voice.

    • Thanks - I wasn't quite caffeinated this morning. 2:1 makes sense, turning the crankshaft 360 degrees will turn the cam 180 degrees, and had I done that, the cam's dot would be at 6 and the crank's at 12 again.   I went ahead and took the sprocket off anyway, aligned everything dot-to-dot including the balance shaft just for s&g. I'm glad I did because I discovered no Loctite on the timing sprocket bolts. Maybe it's not required, but at only 20 ft-lb torque spec, those bolts aren't in there very tight. Cleaned and reassembled with some thread locker and torqued.   A general observation: Less is more with RTV. If a little doesn't stop a leak, a LOT probably won't, either. RTV is thinly veiled revenge, in a tube...      
    • The timing marks are ok, that is #1, you can turn it over until they line up and it won't change anything, the crankshaft turns twice for every camshaft revolution, I have always set up SB Chevs as your pic shows using a straight edge
    • Someone's been here before.... There is a receipt for a 3-piece timing set, purchased earlier this year.   Is this picture something, or, nothing?   I have the timing cover off and my crank is perfectly TDC and the keyed gear's locating mark is dead on 12 o'clock.   The cam gear locating mark is also at 12 o'clock. Now, I'm not an expert, but all the install guides say the two locating marks should meet and be perfectly aligned when installing a timing set. The mark on the crank should be dead on 12:00 and the cam gear's mark should be dead on 6:00, and both marks should be perfectly vertically aligned.   I believe the timing gear is keyed or has a dowel that ensures it can only be installed on the cam in one position, so I have to believe the cam is out of phase somehow. At the very least, with a triangular bolt pattern, it can only be installed in one of 3 different positions.   Before I pulled the front cover, the truck was running alright, no service engine soon lights except an occasional P0172 / rich condition. Timing -16 timing at idle (should be +16), and total -35% fuel trim, two conditions I haven't been able to figure out.   In related news, my injector tested pretty well, wasn't leaking, but I had it rebuilt anyway, and it's on it's way back to me.         Along with this discovery, the good and bad:   Good: The oil pan seal appears undamaged.   Bad: -The timing cover has been reused, and the positioning dowels have been broken. That could explain some of the leaking. -Some kind of white paste or grease was used to try to seal the oil pan seal and timing cover (since wiped off..). -Then, someone globbed silicone all over the front of the cover and also buried the ckp sensor in it. But, they didn't put any inside the cover or use RTV to try to seal the oil pan seal with the timing cover (good).
    • The guy that owns K&P filters last I checked in with him has over 300,000 miles on his Dodge base Hemi using his own 35 micron absolute stainless mesh filter from its first oil change.    The GM study I've posted a dozen times shows the relationship in engine life based in multiples of base units, not miles or years. That is the base unit is the number of miles the motor ran using the reference filter efficiency.    The above two paragraphs dismantle anecdotal arguments IF one changes oil often enough to prevent particle formation and the motor is in otherwise good shape. That is not full of silica (no air filter) or suffering a metallurgical issue that is not part of the lubrication discussion. Poor heat treat in example.   Data from UOA's I've reviewed from more than a few engines can show remarkably broad variations in oil cleanliness using the exact same filter over the course of an engines life.     Lastly there is the common sense of it. Wear debris WILL circulate the engine BEFORE it ever sees a filter in route to that filter and WILL harm the pump which NEVER sees filtered oil.    Alpha question then becomes, given the facts, how long do you believe is a reasonable service life from a vehicle you are certain you will not pass down? That is the junk yard will be it's resting place when you're done with it? (the moral issue most don't care about).    Omega question is then how diligent are you prepared to be in general mechanical, air & oil maintenance? Preventing particulates and keeping them sufficiently dilute; preventing the precursors from generation, amalgamation and precipitation.    If I get a good look at the engine bay of a vehicle I have a fair idea of the owners commitment to the inside of the power train. That 30 micron WIX is still more efficient than a sieve.                 
    • It also depends on what criteria someone is using for “best” when talking filters.  Are we going off best efficiency?   Best quality/QC?  Etc. because the two may not mutually exclusive.
