I have a 2014 suburban rental. Shimmies and vibrates just like the truck

Which is ridiculous because Suburbans traditionally have had softer ride than trucks. This shoots a big hole into the theory that excessive suspension stiffness is the root cause of vibration. Just because a vehicle has stiff suspension does not mean it should shimmy and vibrate. Take a new Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 dually regular cab diesel truck for a test ride and see what I mean by stiff suspension. You will feel every strip and imperfection in the road when driving an empty truck like this. However, I bet you will not experience the type of vibraiton issues described in this thread.

This surprised me also. I was excited to drive one. I have v6 in the truck and of course sub is a v8. The AFM transition causes vibrations. Lots of shimmy and vibes throughout the driving speeds. I drove on highways and back roads did not seem to matter. I can feel the ring and pinion backlash issue, with the 1 second on and 1 second off vibration, like rumble strips. I would be pissed if I bought $70000 of this vehicle

I have a question for those of you who have gone through this crap. I have an appointment to take my shakey 1500 to the dealer next month to have a "field service engineer" do an "inspection of the vehicle"

I told tem and the BBB Autoline that I would NEVER go back to the dealer in my area. Backstabbing lying BOOBS!....So i,m gonna drive 1 1/2 hours to the dealer I bought it from for this appointment. My truck will vibrate alittle one time and then shake like hell when it wants too....I can just invision it deciding to slightly shake when this guy drives it and shake like crazy on my ride home after he says "normal, no problem found".

I don,t want to be negative about it but who has,nt had a time when they can,t get a problem to present itself when they want it to? If this guy says al is fine then where do things go from there? I,m sick of GM. and this crappy truck. If they say it,s fine and I say still meesed up where it it go from there?

Truth is I have been looking online at the Dodge sport r/t, trucks and the Toyotas too. I have boight a load of new GM stuff and some toyotas through the years too. I,m a little gun shy on buying another "American/Mexican truck. I don,t think I ever had to take a Toyota back to the dealer...Besides they are just as American as the others. I WOULD NEVER NEVER EVER accept trade in assistance as a solution to this problem. I will die before I buy another GM product of any kind. They have jerked me around enough.

Don,t let th same dog bite you twice!.

Anyway I was wondering if someone knows what happens next if they go the all is well route after the "inspection". Hope someone has some experience with that senario..

Thanks and still shaking in NC.

No one said stiff suspension was the root cause of all of the vibrations. It was stated that stiff suspension is responsible for the vibration some of us are experiencing, but not everyone. Other's are likely experiencing a vibration in the driveline which is the case for this suburban apparently. I'd start with the ring and pinion on the suburban. The stiff suspension causes what I personally consider to be the slight steering wheel vibration at high speeds and the cause of the truck feeling every single nook and cranny in the road. People not used to that feeling, myself included, think the truck is vibrating. As I've proven by weighing it down with a big load of firewood, my problem was most likely related to the tires and stiff suspension and Idon't have an issue with my driveline. The people posting these youtube videos of severe vibrations probably have an issue in the driveline.

a lawyer is your only way to resolve this, GM is no longer buying back trucks under any circumstance and all they will do is offer a full value trade-in on new truck.

get a lawyer, when they make GM buy the truck back the lawyer fee is paid by GM not you so it costs you nothing but it will take 6-8 months for it all to happen and they will deduct value for the mileage on the truck and any scratches in the bed or dents or dings from parking lots so don't use it if you have any other options. its not a huge deduction but it could be as much as $1,000 if you put around 10,000 miles on it, just figure 10 cents a mile but if its less then 5,000 miles I don't think they deduct anything at all.

So I finally get my truck back today after being at dealer for 6 days. First of all I have to say the service manager was very professional and understanding about my concerns. We test drove truck and he agreed there was a vibration, most noticeable 65-75 mph. The first thing they did was road force balance the tires, he test drove it and the vibration was still there but not as noticeable. The GM rep then had them check the ring and pinion which was within tolerance. Upon further inspection they found excessive play in my passenger rear shock, GM rep told them replace all four shocks. They replaced the front shocks and truck was pulling to the right, had an alignment done fixed issue. This is making sense since I felt the vibration more sitting in the passenger seat on the test drive.

When I picked up truck service manager asked if I had my tires balanced before, I told him yes that I was trying to rule out a balance issue. He told me they didn't do a very good job they were all off. The place I brought it to didn't do a road force balance they told me that is only needed for older vehicles with worn out suspension systems, not going there again. My vibration is now gone I do not feel it in the seat anymore, my wife doesn't feel it either sitting on passenger side. What I will say is the goodyear SRA tires are junk and can't wait to get some new rubber on there along with Bilsteen shocks. I'm extremely relieved to have had this fixed, and really feel bad for the ones who haven't been so lucky. Good luck to everyone!!

td33 be happy you were fixed and happy in 6 days. My Sierra has now been in the shop for SIX WEEKS STRAIGHT for a 45-55 mph steering wheel shake. I have told them I won't take it back till it's fixed or bought back.

Hey Eddie,

How many complaints is GM receiving on a daily or weekly basis regarding vibration with the Sierras and Silverados?

Waiting on a Pinion Assembly to arrive.

Had not heard a peep in two day's, So I just happened to stop by unsure.gif

Seems the pinion deal did not go as planned and even more sadly the exact same stock unit sitting

on the hoist next to mine is a carbon copy of what my truck is experiencing. doh.gif

The Service director and adviser were very detailed as to what has exactly been done up to this point

only by the blessings of GM Engineers ponder.gif

Since it has now been an entire week AFTER the second attempt to correct this issue,

To protect the Innocent ( mostly me ) I can honestly say the the dealer has exercised every

avenue allowed by General Motors and Chevrolet Motor Division. After all this is just a piece of

machinery developed, engineered, and sold by Chevrolet and for the amount of issues GM & Chevrolet

seem to be having on this ' vibration ' issue I do find it myself wondering, based on the information

I've received and the endless amount that is easily attainable on the internet, why my 08/2014 built

unit even has this issue blink.gif

Unless an absolute miracle happens, I don not have a warm fuzzy feeling that I'll see my truck

for Thanksgiving in it's intended working order 001_unsure.gif

I have a GMC 2014 1500, That shakes bad at 45-55mph. Then again at 65-70mpg. GM has looked at this truck 3 times. GM states this is normal for a Z71. Customer Service refuses to do anything for me on this truck. GM states "Vehicle Operating to Factory Specification". With 245 pages of this same issue from other GM customers. How is it Operating at Factory Specification? I have owned GM's for over 57 years and now they have turned their back on another life long customer, Who is looking to purchase another Brand after all these years. THANKS! GM/Customer Service for nothing.

    • We drove about 15 minute east today to visit a friend and saw a steep increase in price in the same county. About 50 cents a gallon steepper.
    • Sure about that? A degree wheel and a dial indicator would lower your degree of assurance in that statement. 😉    It why we have offset keys and dialable timing sprockets. Just say'n.... I've built a few and have never seen one "On the money".
    • I will admit I haven't experimented much with pressure drops beyond the numbers I put in and part of that is that the numbers I used are fairly low and then found out it would trigger regardless at that 35 psi. Having said that I had tried before had changed the placard pressures and being that I have a 1 ton set to 80 on the placard for the rear I believe it triggered close to 60, the front I don't recall now for sure but thought maybe it could get close to 45 from that factory 60 placard pressure. So I never did figure out if it was a number of psi from placard pressure to the alarm or a percentage of the total placard number as some figured it was like a 25% drop from placard pressure would trigger it. So as to try and answer your question, I believe I set the placard pressure on the front to 47 or so and while I run the front tires at 40, they have dipped below that some if its colder and I haven't put "winter air" in yet and never once have had the front alarm go off. I would say that the answer your looking for is no, that if you set your placard pressure to 45, you have a certain amount of room to drop below that pressure before the alarm will go off.    The pressures you decide to run in your truck, that ends up being what makes sense to you based on what your carrying in your truck or if towing, then have to bump them back up to something that will carry the load in the rear and the fronts typically left at the same pressure. It all comes down to that chart I put the link to and using an accurate roadside scale to be your guide, both unloaded and then loaded to know your minimum safe pressures.    I just wish GM would allow a person to change the readings for the tire pressures to the English system of pounds as I have to look at that goofy metric reading that will never ever jive in my head and will go over and change it just to figure out what they are if need be and then change it back.
    • That part I understand, that the dealer can do it. But I'm not understanding why updates that were available to the truck since it left the factory, or the dealership originally, would not still be available to it without dealer intervention.   I'm thinking along the lines of recalls. They stay available until they are completed, regardless of whether they are in warranty or not, or in the hands of the original owner or not. Why not updates as well, especially since some of those can be safety related also?
    • That's good to know, but I don't think I'll even be running them under 45 in the rear  unless it's on the sand or something but will only be for a short distance anyways!    I didn't read all the instructions in the booklet yet, but do you know let's say I set the rear psi on the placard to 45, will the warning light come on soon as it drops under 45 or is there a percentage it has to drop from the set value before the warning light is triggered?
