Hello Guys. I recently purchased a 2015 Silverado Rally Edition and i too have the vibration issue. The dealership i purchased from bought back my first truck 2 weeks ago which was also a 2015 rally edition with the same issue. I just put it back in the shop for the same vibration as the first truck. I have a source that has shed the light on the problem with these trucks and i would like to share it. The problem is the worm gear being warped from a heat cycle issue Gm had at its plant. They are fully aware of this but have'nt decided to issue a recall just yet. Infact i was also told that a lot of the dealerships are not even aware of this yet explaining the problems with diagnosing the problem, because Gm is keeping it under wraps. Go next time to the dealership with hopefully a little more knowledge than you had before. Hope this helps all.

The worm gear? Is this in the power steering system?

BTW . I have owned 2 other GM trucks in the past. A 2004 Silverado Ext Cab Z71 4x4 5.3L , bought from my uncle at 35K miles. Then traded it for a (NEW) 2007 Silverado Ext Cab Z71 5.3L 4x4, neither of which had any vibration problems. I have noticed the vibrations are definatley more noticable when NOT accelerating, but also NOT hard braking (decelarations). It seems to be more prevelent when slowing down or moderate cruising speed. Like when letting of the gas slightly or lightly braking, but not a warped rotor vibration. This 2014 has only 4k miles.

A few Jeep guys, that are wrenchers, said its sounds like the backside of the diff pinion gear, or ring gear. There is definately an issue, thankfully I don't drive it must or very far, daily

My service manager has mentioned the rear diff, but doesn't have a definate answer or confimation. keep y'all posted

Worm gear...you mean the pinion gear in the rear differential? I would believe that. This sounds like that kind of issue. And, we have heard of some folks having the issue resolved with the replacement of the "rear end". Still not 100% certain which component in the rear end is the real offender. Pinion? Crown gear? Maybe the bearings? Maybe the housing itself?

I purchased an off lease 2015 Silverado crew cab this week with 17k miles on it and was fearful of the vibration issue and the radio issue, but after a long test drive and about 600 miles this week, I can say that so far I've been lucky, best of luck to all frustrated with GM's vibration

Well now I have gone through 3 full new sets of tires, 2 being Goodyears and 1 being Nitto TGs, also 2 different sets of rims both being 20's from GM and the new 2015 with only 1500 miles continues to vibrate. It starts at 45mps and goes in and out but is at its worst at 75mph. I feel it pretty constant in the steering wheel but the center console and drivers seat shakes like crazy.

I took my truck in for its second free oil change and I stayed outside to make sure the kid doing it was actually gonna rotate the tires. He did rotate them and put in 8qts of oil per the new bulletin on that. Took my truck out to the interstate and accelerated hard to 80 mph and stayed in the 70-80 mph range. Truck is not vibrating near as bad as it did when new, just a very slight vibration in the low 70's but hardly noticeable. I am pretty sure my vibe problem is related to these crappy GY tires.

I've had a ~70+mpg slight vibration / petal vibration. My dealership looked into it this past week.

 

For reference I have larger tires that I had swapped onto the 2014 from my 2005 at trade-in and I also did not have the vib issue in my 2005 with 3.42's and these same tires.

 

Tech at dealership said with any warranty related vibrations GM is requiring the trucks have stock size tires and just like most of you have had done is first step is to verify the tires are mounted and balanced properly. So with mine they had to go thru this temporarily replacing my larger tires with stock ones.

 

See my attached image of the tech notes. The dealership was more than helpful and accommodating even willing to let me test drive with stock tires to feel the difference and mentioned they were not wanting to turn away work but they felt my issue was larger tires and 3.08's.

 

I'd like to trust the dealership. They've always been great to deal with. I'd of course love it if my truck truely had no issue. Its otherwise a great truck that I really enjoy driving. Anyone else with larger tires and 3.08's experiencing or not experiencing a similar issue?

I recently took a trip and turned the V4 back on for another MPG test. After 2K miles of HWY driving I gained 1 MPG. My truck hates it, it's back off, gone is the V4 shake and unhappy transmission. Back to smooth as glass and great shifting transmission. It's staying off.

I have an intune so I'll have to put that back on and try it out with v4 off and the tcm tune to see how it feels. I really didn't notice a difference in vibs when the truck switches from v8 to v4, or in M5 vs M6 etc previously but who knows I hadn't really tested that too much. I'll give it a more thorough test.

What do you have that allows you to turn off the V4 mode. I was told by the dealer this couldn't be done.

Most of the tuners will do it. I have the Diablo intune, others use Blackbear. There is a product called the Range that disables it. That one is probably the safest in regards to warranty since it just stays plugged into the odb2 port and doesn't actully reprogram the ECM. The other option is to drive around in M5 but that seems like it'd drop your mpg even more at freeway speeds.

Sounds like this now very long posting of pages needs to be split into what I see to be two key areas:

 

1) V6 to V4 mode issues.

2) Vibration of all other engine sizes.

 

I fall into the later. Talked with the Service Manager and mine is going in Wednesday. My vibration is more above 40 mph and hits it's high point about 75 or so. I can feel it in the steering wheel and you can see the water in a 20oz bottle of water just dance around on a smooth road with no bumps. Not as bad as some You Tube videos I've seen, but it just looks like someone is throwing a stone in the water all the time, it never stops moving. The passenger seat vibrates also and you can see it. On most days it's mildly annoying, on some days it's very annoying.

 

He was well informed of the issue and that these trucks are very sensitive to being out of balance and stated that he would:

 

a) Check for tires out of balance.

b) Road Force balance them, if not found above.

c) Use the Pico Oscilloscope when he test drives it.

d) Check for out of balance drive line, etc. if not found above, etc.

 

I have confidence they can figure it out...I'll report back on Thursday...wish me luck! :driving:

I own a 2014 Silverado High Country. I am also experiencing the V8 to V4 “shake, rattle and roll” and after reading hundreds of post on several forums concerning the matter, got worked up over a “defect” that is not really a defect. Yep, after figuring it out myself it become apparent the truck “IS” operating within design perimeters, hence, dealerships’ assessment as “normal” regarding the “shake, rattle and roll”. I took my truck to the dealer and complained and now feel less than smart for not doing the research before taking action. At the risk of alienating someone this is how I see things.

 

1. To be very honest, other than wanting perfection, this issue doesn’t pass the “so what” test. It’s not a show stopper just an annoyance. Silverado is a truck and when you change the power to weight ratio of 3 tons of truck while driving, things are going to be less than perfect but mpg will increase.

 

2. Heck, I can count the times I’ve ever seen the V4 mode because I almost never consistently drive within that range and most likely accelerating beyond it. I believe most of you are too; with your foot to the floor.

 

3. When you buy a 3 ton truck with a 6.2L engine…well, obviously “mpg” is of no concern. And other than appeasement and the perception of good customer support, I believe GM may have come to the same conclusion being more concerned with gearing up for 2016 than fixing something that is a “non-defect”. As Blade would say, “someone always got to skate uphill”.

 

4. If I was so concerned about mpg a small foreign pickup would have been sufficient instead of one of the best and biggest American truck ever made.

 

5. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. If you throw away a truck because of this matter someone else will surely prophet! And when you take your truck to the dealership for something like this they might screw something else up just looking for something that is not a problem

 

6. Understand this, I believe the whole matter is “someone” else’s agenda, definitely not something that concerns me.

geez, you have to be a paid shill GM employee trying to spread stupidity in the hopes people are high enough on drugs to swallow your horse manure to agree that their truck are supposed to shake like farm trucks driving across a corn field? tell your GM bosses there aren't enough drugs in the world to make us think these trucks are supposed to shake like that, but then GM will soon be out of the truck selling business because of their stupid handling of this. the word is out and you are becoming know as THE brand to never buy.

So, I've filed a complaint with BBB. GM contacted me and sent me to a second dealership as the first one basically told me to pound sand once they got wind of the BBB complaint. With that said, the second dealership replaced all 4 stock Continental tires with Firestone tires.

 

I like the handling and profile better of the Firestones, but the shaking continues; actually partially worse at slower speeds (60-70) as the Conti's were worse at around 70-80.

 

Back to dealer tomorrow.

My truck is a 2023 GMC 1500, I have looked heavily into the AI boxes but I consistently find common complaints with lag.    Does carplay auto open now that you have it set up when you get in truck and turn it on? Or do you have to do open the app everytime?

    • It added a cost layer to an already limited production supply. True that. 
    • Swap costs and supply/demand balance. When a barrel comes out of the ground the entire range of products are present but not all at the same percentage.    Breakdown of Refined Products The following table summarizes the approximate output from a standard 42-gallon barrel of crude oil: Product Type Gallons per Barrel Percentage of Total Gasoline 20 gallons 45% Diesel Fuel 9 gallons 21% Other Products 13 gallons 31%   Most of that diesel figure is 'straight run' or cut from the barrel. Gasoline 'cut from the barrel runs 0 to 20% at the crude. So in the crude unit there is more diesel the gasoline, usually.  The full refining experience however gives the tabled values. Ego there is half the diesel than gasoline after the 'first crack' That could be an FCC unit, or Isomax or....   Those units take heavy products and break the big ones into little ones. Those numbers are harder to get hold of but directionally it ends up the same.    Really light products are very profitable. Ethylene and Propylene to name two. Those are cracked from slightly heavier feeds like NG and Propane and Ethane. The cracker harshness determines the feed for distillation. Those feeds come from less profitable products like diesel and gasoline.    So...there is a swap cost. How much market is there TODAY and what crude am I running TODAY..... what is my process capable of always.    There is this as well. The USA uses allot more gasoline than it does diesel so in the cracker the process is tilted to gasoline production which....limits supply of diesel. OTR uses the most and it has different requirements than automotive and agricultural.  Limiting auto products.    You are correct however. It is less refined, just less of it. Allot less. 
    • Most thermostatically controlled ATF systems use a 'wax' pill just like the one in your water thermostat. They work on the expansion volume of the wax and the pill is constructed in such a way as to limit the travel to remain within that range. This means it has an opening temperature often called the 'cracking temperature' and a fully open temperature. For whatever reason oil is designated by it's fully open temperature and water by it's cracking temperature.    Between the two it the "Regulating Temperature" The entire range is about 20 F from closed to open. In your example the lower limit, opening point of 145 F then has a fully open temp of 165 F and a throttling temperature of 155 F.    Thing is, the throttling temperature needs two things to work properly. Enough system load high enough to reach the minimum and a heat sink (cooler/exchanger) large enough to prevent any load applied from exceeding the fully open temperature.    If your system exceeds the fully open temperature it is screaming MORE COOLER.    Here is the silly part of the whole thermostat system where the oil is cooled/heated by the radiator. Nothing is flowing to that system until the oil temperature reaches the cracking temperature unless it is equipped with a minimum flow bypass orifice or a bypass built into the seating surface of the plunger. That system meant to get it up to temp quicker isn't doing a thing until WORK drives if from ambient to cracking temp. One a cold winter day, like zero F, it may never get hotter than about 110 F. Sometimes not even that.    People forget or are young enough to not know that until this millennia transmissions were cooled by the radiator cold tank alone and without a thermostat at all.  In the 50's they weren't even cooled. OEMs learn everything the hard way.    When an OEM tells you the trans "Works best" between 175 F and 220 F it means works best for THEM. The transmission thermostat is fuel play. If you watch you trans temps like I do you will learn that it may take a hundred miles if you are not towing and not driving more than say 55-60 mph on a zero F day to even reach 120 F and it might sit there all day if it's colder. Yet if functions perfectly over about 100 F. It may need to get a bit warmer for the fuel and spark maps to go without an multiplier.    Worry more about too hot. Use a cooler large enough to put that thermostat in range.
