GM Recall #:
2016007
NHTSA #
Date Issued:
Sep 08, 2016
Recall Title:

Frontal Airbag And Pretensioner Non Deploy
Recall Description:

General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2014-2017 model year Chevrolet Silverado LD, GMC Sierra LD, Buick Encore, Chevrolet Trax, Chevrolet Caprice Police, and Chevrolet Corvette vehicles, 2014-2016 model year Buick Lacrosse, Chevrolet Spark EV, and Chevrolet SS vehicles and 2015-2017 model year Chevrolet Silverado HD, GMC Sierra HD, GMC Yukon, GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade Cadillac Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Suburban, and Chevrolet Tahoe vehicles. The sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) in these vehicles, which controls airbag and pretensioner deployment, contains a software defect which may prevent the deployment of frontal airbags and pretensioners in certain rare circumstances. That is correct 2017's have the same vibration, even the Denali's that I test drove. they were no where near as bad, but it was sill there.

Once you own a vibrator you know exactly what to look for. Do you think if you never had ridden in one of the shakers before and were not super in tune with the symptoms you would have noticed the vibe in the 17?

If I had never owned a Shakerado, I probably would have assumed it was the road, but knowing what I do, and exactly how it feels. I know its there. I also don't know if it will get any worse because of the tires setting on the bead, wearing etc. so there are more factors to consider if anyone is looking at them

Did you mean it won't get any worse with the tires seating or it will get worse

Many of us have, we just dropped it off someplace other than where we bought it. Along with a large sum of our money :(

But to me it was worth it, in the 10 months since i opted out I have been to my new dealership once and that was for an oil change.

Posted

+1...dropped mine off 9 months ago, only have had routine oil changes done since. If only I could find a Delorean to go back in time to before I bought that POS.

Posted

Another +1. Got rid of mine too? Dealership for free oil change only. I look forward to going to work in the morning only because I want to drive my new smooth truck.

Well, in response to the latest post.....

Got the new Michelin LTX AT/2's. Tire service center install, balanced and aligned. Guess what? Same vibration as before. 45 -55 is the worst, during deceleration. It seems more when temp temp is cold, or fully hot. In between isn't as bad, at least that's what it seems. So I'm going back to the dealership and shoving the tires up the A$$ (just as I told them). Can anyone guess what the next steps are? I'm going back to the dealership tomorrow and asking them "ok, what's the next step?".

Any guesses?

I'm going to suggest that after further analysis, they state "well that's normal for this vehicle". It may set me off.

Any suggestions from the group on what do or say if they come back to me with that? I'm simply not letting them off the hook this easy. I paid good money for this, and GM is gong to pay one way or the other.

I love to listen to your suggestions.

Just complete the 2nd trip to the dealership. They replace the hitch (recall) which was good. I was told that the 'tech' (and I use that loosely) said that the vibration was caused from the fuel in the tank moving around. LOL. Seriously, that was the diagnosis. Oh, and that it as "normal vibration for a pick up". Then they proceeded to try and give me a document of the "GM Announcement" that the noise I was feeling hearing was normal. LOL. This is so ridiculous, that I really can't make this crap up, even if I tried. Wow.

So, I calmly explained that I didn't acknowledge a clunking sound, or a thud, or a sudden jerking. I politely explained that as it was documented on my call with the service 'guy', (and yes, it is documented), that the vibration was not diagnosed, and that I would be happy to take the tech with a drive and show him exactly what I'm feeling. They agreed, reluctantly. I even heard the one of guys in the shop say "this is bullsh!!", as one of the other employees opened the door and walked through.

So, from here, what can I expect? I also explained to him what I felt is was. Hopefully, I didn't show my cards too soon. I guess I don't know what they will come back with. There are several scenarios. I explained that in my opinion, it was drive train related, probably related to the ring and pinion or bashlash related. He told me that he would pass that along (yeah, okay).

I also asked him if they had checked the pinion angle and drive shaft balance as I requested. He saisd that since it wasn't on the work order, and there wasn't anything pointed that direction, that he did not. Hmmm......

So, back in 3 days from now with a tech with me for a first hand experience.

Any advise on what to expect or how I should approach these guys after the drive? What are reasonable demands/requests that I can ask for without breaking the bank?

Well as of now my 2015 All -Terrain is in for the shakes no bad but just enough to finally have the dealer look into it .3rd time I have commented about and have it documented on each visit , 1st time rebalance tires last year, 2nd time rotation and rebalance balance was out, finally this time they have it for 2 days so far balance is good next step they are connection the vibration test kit? with pile of sensors etc connected and driving it a round. have 35000 KM (Canada) 21000 Miles

also they are checking the lazy shifting of transmission at least to me it is. no matter the out come it is being traded in next spring. being for sale now and potential buyer have commented on the minor shake so as of now I can not even sell the thing !!

Plus seat belt recall and air bag recall done.

My Canadian friend, best of luck. I'm at the point that I don't trust the dealership. I have found that they have inexperienced "techs" and that they are directed to follow a protocol that leave the consumer (you and I) holding the money bag. In my two month of ownership of a GMC 2014 Sierra, it's been nothing but a major disappointment.

To give you the bottom line, here are your options:

1. Continue to play the cat and mouse game with the "stealership". You will end up forced to buy/replace parts that their "techs" claim is the issue. Probably end up in $2-$3k range before you can get a lawyer and file a lemon law claim. By the way, at this point, you can't trade in, because all the service records are available to the other dealerships on your truck that show all the work being done and the owner's (you) service requests.

2. Try and figure it out on your own. Find a good trusted person, with good tools, and diagnose yourself and do the work. Yes, it will take time and money, but it better than getting work done by the dealership. Be patient and just use good mechanical sense. Again, probably looking at $2-$3k for specialist/independant shops to assist, and again, you may still not have solved the problem. Risk vs. Reward. This is what I'm leaning towards.

3. Just stop now. Stop messing with it, cut your loses, and move forward. Sucks, but it is reality.

We (GM owners in the middle of this shi! storm) are left with nothing to do but suck it up. We made a bad decision for a bad product, and now we are screwed financially. The truck has so many good features, but the vibration/wobble is trumping the good things. Once you accept it, your decision making will be much easier.

At this stage of the game, you are damned if you do, damned if you don't. I can tell you that I wish my father (a GM diehard) was still alive. He'd even been disappointed, but a bet that he would find the issue and be able to fix it. He was master mechanic, and as long as i've been alive, he could fix anything. Literally, a mechanical genius.

So, I'm probably going to eat about another $3k, just to determine if my pride is worth is it. I'm self diagnosing, in hope that we can find a fix. If you are not willing to commit, simply trade it in for another brand (sorry Dad).

Best of luck. Sad, but true....

We have Full warranty until 2022 see it is all on GMs dime

For me the dealer has been pretty good it was their suggestion to dig further into it even though they found nothing wrong with tires and visual check and a test drive, so far they are willing to go the extra with out hesitating. but then again we bough3 vehicles from them so far in the last 2 years. truck, sons car and daughters car. each time we have had no issues with any requests. If it drags on I plan on just keep on returning and documenting the vibration no getting up set each time just stay polite. service advisor called to apologize today for not having a solution and if it was OK too keep it longer to hook up the test sensors. As long as they seem to be trying to help that's is Ok as they know we will be back next year for a new car for my wife. So far I am on good terms with the sales manager, finance manager as well as the service manager

not sure why I see line in everything sorry...

have similar issues...interior and console shakes on freeway....hit a bump and its like hitting a concrete block....taken 2015 HD LTZ to Sands Chevrolet in Surprise Arizona WHERE I PURCHASED IT a number of times and they just give me the run around and tell me its the 20" wheels. Its so bad that i actually get embarrassed when I have passengers. Most I have ever paid for a truck......by far the worst riding truck i have ever owned. Wheels???? dont think so......drive shaft????? maybe And when is chevy going to fix the wobbly front brakes???? its going on 20 years chevy and your front brakes suck!!! FRUSTRATED

    • www.enginelabs.com/news/what-i-learned-today-bearing-clearances-vs-oil-viscosities/     www.enginelabs.com/news/oil-viscosity-can-the-numbers-be-misleading/ The Big Lie… Coming full circle to the reason Lake discusses the Porsche engines in particular. Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far.
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install.
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
