Will this buff out?

Some reason i do stupid things with new stuff. For someone who takes care of their things very well these things shouldn't happen. Long story short unloading a fourwheeler from a trailer i leaned my .308 against the tailgate and it fell down. The edge of the barrel was leaning against the tailgate and left this..

So will it buff out? I mean i guess this is part of the downside to having a dark truck.. but damn i was tired of white.

 

Just got done washing it, and i'm noticing more and more chips, scratches, etc. Don't know how half of them got there. F it i guess. Going to have to get used to it regardless.

is it to primer or just clear coat.

 

if it is just clear coat, a good buffer can dull it. They can move the clear coat over it and you wont see it unless the light is just right.

If it is into the primer you will need it touched up, then buffed out.

 

I was a detailer in high school for a large dealer. I buffed out all kinds of stuff on new trucks.

I am going to say no as it looks pretty deep (does your nail catch on it?), wet sanding would probably blend it

it's not bad... should buff with no issue. Consider yourself lucky you only got a scratch on your truck.... could have been worse with that gun falling.

From the picture it looks like its just a surface scratch. If you are not familiar with working with a DA/Orbital Polisher I would save the headache and take it to a good detailer (not the volume ones you see on the sides of the road) and have them buff it out.

 

If the scratch is past the clear and into the paint/primer coat it will need to be touched up. Larry from AMMO NYC is a great follow on youtube. He is a Grade A detailer with a ton of "how to" videos and such. Here is a really good video on how to touch up scratches with paint.

Worst case scenario is it will need professional attention, however you could try very gingerly wet sanding with 1000 grit working up to 1500 and follow up with some polish. If it's just the clear coat you could get a decent result, the dark color has you at a disadvantage though.........good luck and keep us updated.

Try Meguiars scratch remover. If it's just in the clear coat, it will help. Be careful wet sanding, it can go south quick if you don't know what you're doing.

 

If it doesn't come out, just say F it. It's a truck. You can't haul an ATV in a scratch free Prius!

I'd rather the gun take the beating honestly as it's setup to take a beating. Granted it's an expensive weapon i've finally gotten over the whole "babying my things" i guess the truck is new and is why i feel that way about it. For years though i have bought top end firearm equipment setup to take a abuse and been so careful with it. Not saying i should abuse it but just got tired of worrying about every little spec of dust, scratch, brass shaving, etc.

 

I think the its just clear coat but my nail does catch on it. Dad told me it was clear coat when i asked him to look at it. I no nothing about this kind of stuff. Guns/computers i'd have an idea. Old high school buddy of mine's family owns southern collision which is a repair shop here. So probably where i'll go to what his dad can do.

Just try to wetsand the area and buff it with compound

I'd use 2000 grit

Thats what I'd do, wet!!

Don't treat your gun that way. Take care of the gun first and the other crap later. You are about the 150 millionth guy to do that. Myself included.

I can appreciate the truck being brand new and wanting to keep it looking that way for a long time, but....

 

I'd say leave it unless it's exposing metal. My old '06 had all kinds of scratches, dings, and dents by time it was totaled. I just figured it added "character" to the truck. I would only fix up the deep scratches that went down to metal. The "new" truck came with a handful of dings and scratches so I guess it's already broken in for me.

Well there is definitely a point when a new truck becomes a "beater" I personally think he should get it fixed as I would do the same on mine. My 2014 is a long time from being a beater and intend on keeping it looking good for the time being.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
