Steering Issue? Among other things...

You know, my dealer sent me a little care package after I bought the truck. Had a couple of coffee cups in it with their logo and some cookies... It was a nice touch. Guess what flavor? I shit you not, they were lemon cookies. I wonder if that was some kind of sick joke

Maybe a dose of reality?

Service advisor called. Area rep is supposed to call me tonight. It will be a blocked number and I need to answer it. Nice. Wouldn't want me to call them I guess. He also said there is a software update now for hard steering in cold weather. He wants to have me come in and have them install it. Told him I would talk to the area rep first.

Update:

Area rep phoned me this evening. Spoke to him and he wants me to take it in for the calibration. I explained my problems, but he was hard to read over the phone. I explained the steering bind in the cold temperature, the pull to the left and the wander. I don’t think they completely explained the problem I was having. He seemed a little surprised by my explanation of the issues. He got right down to asking me what I wanted for compensation. I told him I didn’t know and I would rather see what happens after this update. He asked that I have the software calibration done and to drive it for a week and see what happens. I said okay. He asked me again about compensation and I told him that right now when I look at the truck it turns my stomach, which is true. Let's wait until the software update and go from there. I didn't have an answer to give him at the moment. I honestly don’t know what I would want. I don’t think at this point I would want another GM truck. (I hate to say that, but right now it's true.)

After this discussion, I asked about the frame rust and he said that is surface rust and it is normal. I said it’s not just the rust, it’s the actual coating coming off. He asked where and I explained the areas to him. I told him I could take some pictures and send to him, he told me to send them to the service advisor at the dealer and he would forward them on to him. Next I asked him if he had heard any complaints about the headlights. He asked what was wrong with them and I said they had no lateral (left/right) illumination. Rural roads are terrible because I can’t see. Going over 30-40MPH I get a little nervous. He said he hadn’t heard anything about that before but to have them looked at when I take it in for the software update. I’ll ask if they are aimed correctly, but other than that they come on, so I don’t think the dealer will touch them aside from aiming them. At this point, I don’t want them to.

So that's it for now. I will try to schedule something next week.

BTW, I will try to get the details on the software update and post them here. The area rep says it is only a couple days old, but the service rep said it was for hard steering in cold weather. Not really my main issue, but I will let them try it.

I don't have any pull and have the 20" tires.... Since you asked figured I would answer

Thanks. I don't think it's the tires,I think there is a mechanical issue. Area rep tried to tell me it was not legal for the dealer to put smaller tires on when I said just put some 18" tires on to be sure. Dumbest explanation I have ever heard...

Let us know about the software update when you get it done. I've noticed that in really cold weather, it does get harder to steer.

Just an update, the software update that GM wanted the dealer to install was already in there. They put it in a couple visits so. It is not released to the public, so I think it might have been an experiment. There were no numbers attached to it. It was sent to the technician from GM. Sorry, but I can't help anyone else at this time.

Also, the area rep told the service advisor that he had planned to trade me out of the truck, but then he realized I bought it used... He didn't come out and say it, but alluded to me that I was stuck with it. He also suggested that I have a nice truck and I should put 18" tires on it... I told him I thought it should be GM's responsibility. I was biting my lip pretty hard though. Wtf...

Also, the technician was out in the area when I dropped my truck off, I spoke to him a little, he seemed sharp. I asked if this update was supposed to fix my pull to the left, he said he it might. He was doubtful. The fix was for the hard steering in cold weather. I will say it was 10 degrees today, wind chill of -10. The steering never stuck. This update might actual help once they release it.

I guess that's promising.

I would bet that if you went in for a service visit on this, they could get their hands on the update and install it for you. The technician got it on the first call to the TAC.

Nice, I am due for an oil change in a few weeks. I'll inquire when I bring it in.

I'm due for an oil change too and will inquire about this update. My steering definitely binds up in cold weather which makes zero sense for an electronic steering system. If it was hydraulic I'd understand. I'm also going to ask about reprogramming the HVAC control module so that my truck will adjust HVAC settings automatically based on outside air temp regardless of what I have set the settings to in the truck....like the old GMT900 system worked.

Dealer called today. GM has sent a steering gear to install. Couple hours they said. Let's see what happens.
