Sooo, this is something that cost about 200.00 bucks to disable the 4 cylinder option? Not sure it is worth that to me when Chev. built it the way they built it. Seems like it should be their problem and not mine!

Would you suggest starting out from a dead stop in 5th gear?

i always do... i usually use 4th gear in stop and go traffic, 5th gear for city driving with faster traffic, and 6th gear for the highway and V4 afm activated to sip that gas..

Do you think this would solve my issue? My 2017 with only 7000 miles on it now, is still doing what it has since day 1. The technician told me in May of this year that I should drive it harder and that it was something to do with it wanting to go or going into 4 cylinder mode. I notice the "vibration" or "hesitations" when I first start it up in the morning. I will notice it immediately as I start to accelerate and will notice it "bucking" or hesitating up to about 35 or so for the first 5 or 10 minutes and then it drives like a normal truck again. They told me in may that in 6 months I wouldn't notice it anymore (guess they were trying to brush me off). My thoughts are, if it actually had anything to do with the 4 cylinder mode then why don't I notice it after it warms up??  It is a 6 speed transmission and they tell me that Chev. has no service file bulletins on them and it is just for the 8 speed as far as changing out the transmission fluid to Mobil 1.

yeah i would get a lot of hesitation before when i drove in town in Drive or 6th gear. it was dangerous when in busy traffic situations. now i only use 4th gear is busy traffic, it really wakes the truck up!

 

if your willing to spend $200 bucks , i recommend getting a throttle enhancer, this will really fix a lot of lag on the pedal. dont waste money on the AFM disabler. 

 

after that have a local mechanic pull out the tranmission thermostat and plug the pi-pass in the cooler line,  this will also improve the shifting pattern. should be noted the torque converters are a common failure point on 6 & 8 speeds, so go easy on them, minimize your hotrodding until you upgrade this part

so, start out in 4th or 5th in town and that will make things better? Don't think I should have to spend any money to make things better----it is a Chevy problem that I shouldn't have to be dealing with! The idea of the thermostat is interesting to me on the transmission. I doubt I could get Chevy to listen to that idea but I could see that as a potential issue since it runs fine once it gets warmed up. They won't acknowledge there is a problem with the 6 speeds only the 8!

Chevy wont  accept this is the problem, because it's way too expensive to fix, and most trucks are clearing the warrantee limit with defective parts.  grumpy bear posted a tech paper on the issue , let me dig it up for you to read up on..

So, I am not sure my transmission is the one they are referring to in that tech paper and not sure, even if it is, that is the issue with mine as mine seems to have had the problem since day 1. I was told that mine was a 6 speed transmission and there was no service file bulletins related to them---only the 8 speed.

you have the 6l80 if its a 1500 truck with  5.3 or smaller engine. there wont be any bullitins.... no one is talking about it, GM doesnt want it even to be discussed. like i said too expensive to do a recall on all 6 or 8 speed trans...

So, mine is still under warranty with only 7000 miles on it with a dealer telling me that is just the way it is basically. I have had lots of new vehicles and this is the first new truck I purchased for a retirement gift to me. I have never had issues like this one is having. To me, when you put it in drive, it should run down the road and not hiccup and hesitate for the first 10 minutes while it is warming up. They blame trying to get the most fuel economy out of them now days is the reason it does it. I just bought a new 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it doesn't seem to have those issues! Do you have any suggestions on what I should do or who I should contact?

Did you know that when the AFM cycles the torque converter clutch cycles to buffer the exchange? You can't actually feel the AFM. You are feeling the TC clutch.

i never knew that.. all the more reason not to drive around in 6th gear  to minimize wear on those components until you actually need the fuel efficiency.

the next option is to have a tuner, repair the software that GM has designed for fuel efficiency and emmisions compliance.  this is the real reason the trucks are a mess.  you will Void warrantee but will be much happier in the end.  Blackbear perfomance or EFILive  recalibrate the ecu and tcu for correct operation that you are expecting  and they add a little more punch too.

    • It varies a ton around me. Some places are still at $5.00 or higher and others are way down into the $4's.   Offroad diesel was $4.02 at the one station I passed today.
    • So after reading the reveal from Chevrolet, I kept asking myself...why did the trim levels change?   Here are the official ones:   Work Truck (WT): The quintessential fleet truck, built with durable, easy-to-clean interiors for commercial or utilitarian use. Carplay is also something that cannot be removed.  Hopefully it will remain.     I am excited about the 5.7L V8 (350 C.I.D.)  Old school Chevy power.  My only concern is whatever version of AFM/DFM cylinder deactivation.  Too bad that isn't an option a buyer can choose to have or not.   I will definitely be stopping by my local dealership when these trucks start showing up.

    • The not as clean as one would assume theme with the new engine oil, that reminds me of comments over the years with mechanics not always being so on board with filling an oil filter, not from the center anyway due to that typically being the clean side of the filter, danger of some contaminant falling into the filter if not careful but the realization now that the oil may not be as pure as one had assumed it would surely be. Yes it would be possible to fill from the small holes but that means messing with something to prop open the anti drain back valve if the filter is so equipped and not damage that valve in the process. Me, I have hardly ever prefilled an engine oil filter however I have prefilled diesel fuel filters with a filter on a fuel bulk tank and for anyone that has messed with diesel engines with filters and units that have a limited or no way of priming them, putting on a dry filter is a bad day to say the least with those crappy systems. But anyway back to not so clean engine oil, indeed perhaps its not so bad after all that I have not made a practice of prefilling oil filters.    As Grumpy Bear commented on keeping things clean, that I really have to wonder what the typical practice is at a dealer or any other shop that changes engine oil, do they make sure to wipe or wash off the oil plug and certainly if it fell into some gunk or onto a dirty floor, or that they wiped the filter mounting flange and didn't go and use some dirty rag and end up adding dirt to the inside of the head of the filter mount. Or be careless in how they stored or handled the new filter and if they were bumping into items under the vehicle with the filter opening facing up and having dirt drop right into the filter and if so right into the threaded center that is on the clean side. The top side, did they clean away the built up gunk that may be around the filler before removing the cap or to be really careful at that point that something right close to the filler hole that was hidden under the caps flange won't fall into the engine. Or did they clean the funnel or was that just laying there covered in oil from the oil change before and dust kicked up from sweeping the floor stuck to the oil and now that will go running into the next persons engine due to just not cleaning the funnel as "they won't know anyway" attitude as that young guy is more worried about taking a break so he can go outside and smoke a joint. Just random points that came to mind when I think about what some hired personnel may do that the shop foreman has no idea of or perhaps the whole attitude of some shops may be "eh ... who cares, they will never know the difference anyway".
