I have the same thoughts.  I've not changed the oil on this truck but using an appropriate funnel would be the first option that came to my mind.  I have a long neck angled funnel that I use on my motorcycle that I think would be perfect for the task!  The fill tube modification looks like a great option for those who regularly service their own vehicles.

Agree, the tube seems like it's the cat's ass but I have to have it sealed extremely well at the valve cover from dust and dirt etc.  I don't see why this would not work with proper cover and fittings not for me though.....

it threads into the filler tube...most of my tech's use it

Yes,  I use it. Fits my 2002 and our 2016 Suburban.  Works great and also fits some Fords as well.

.. here's another option for fill tube extensions.. I chose mine specifically to clear my catch can hoses but it is much easier to access/fill then stock location..20190301_123101.jpg.4980578f2e6b7b8e5f2e3255f68fbb16.jpg

.. details can be found in catch can post..

I will add that I used to have a funnel with an accordion flex nozzle and a handle on the back. I would hang the handle on my driver's side fender brace bar and it made oil dumps easy.

I have that one at work.  It works but it points the filler end straight at the master cylinder and it's still tough to get the oil in if you use a big jug like we do at work, so I put a transmission funnel in it also.   single quarts might be ok though

Something I've found that works is the GIGANTIC funnel Walmart has for the 5 quart bottles. Added benefit is it is big enough to where I can hold it against one of the cross braces and that keeps it really stable.
