Does anyone know if there are aftermarket general harnesses or loop harnesses that plug between the back of the infotainment system and the body harness?  I want to be able to take the audio signal from each of the speakers, send it to the rear of the truck into a DSP and amp, and then back to the body harness and into the speakers.  I don't want to cut factory wiring.  I've checked Crutchfield and a little bit online but i don't seem to see anything for 2020.

 

New to GM trucks and dealer is currently locating my truck for a dealer swap, and appreciate any help or input.

Thanks reaper.  it looks like they have what i am looking for.  by any chance have you (or anyone else) done stereo mods?  i have no familiarity with GM but numerous upgrades to fords.

I replaced the front dash and door speakers with a Kenwood set KFC-XP6903C.  They sound great and I don't really think it needs an amp for my use....gets loud enough without distortion.  The dash speakers were a direct bolt in (I clipped the plug off the stock speakers and re-wired into the Kenwood leads) and the 6x9 was bolt in after you snip the bracket down to fit the Chevy.  I had a 10" solobaric in a box that I transferred from my 4 runner that fits perfectly under the rear seat.  Running that with a 200W per channel amp...again, more than enough for me.  I used an LC2i to convert the rear door speaker signal to RCA and add the bass frequencies back.  The LC2i lets you bring back the bass that the stock system cuts out...quite a few you tube videos on it.  Amp and LC2i are under the passenger seat, just took the entire seat out to make it easier.  Wasn't too bad...took a bit of time to make sure it was all right and tidy.  I also used a marine battery switch to use as a disconnect from my battery to my amp and lights.

The set he sells in the link I posted is two plugs with wire that basically intercepts the stock signal to send to an amp, and then sends the amp signal back to the speakers.  I'm not a super audio snob, but I like it to sound good, and just the Kenwood speakers makes a huge difference in the quality of sound.  The bass fills in the low end details.  I'll relate any further details as I did them if you want.

Great post. I'm Considering just the speaker swap for now. Did you listen to the system with just the front speakers swapped? 

I will eventually get a sub, but I know the stock front speakers need more punch.

Speakers were a night and day difference.  Once you take the stock speakers out, you'll wonder how they even made sound as poorly as they are made.  The magnets on them were so small.  Swapping the rear door speakers may not even need a sub for some, but mine was just sitting there so I threw it in.  The dash speaker is a 2 1/2 inch-ish speaker so mine sounds more like a mid-range with the bass removed, which I like...I've had some tweeters the are just too much high freq you can hear coming from that area.  I'm not really brand specific for loyalty, but the Kenwood speakers were designed for this type of application and they do sound good.  2 1/2 tweeter and 6x9 mid.

The rear door speakers allegedly roll off base when turned up, which I believe to be true as the LC2i has a certain point that the bass comes back in as you turn it up.

 

The Kenwood speakers were $200 at a local stereo shop, much cheaper than Crutchfield, and Amazon is not an authorized reseller so I went local with them.

I am getting an LT with all the Conv packages.   I also have 2 subs, a Dayton Audio DSP (4 channels in and up to 8 channels out), 5 channel JBL Club amp (sub out and 4 channels), JL Audio 6x9s that i may use some or all in the new truck. 

 

The truck has the upgraded HD Radio 8" system but not Bose. Is this the same config you have on your truck?  I did listen to a Bose and the HD Radio 8" and I didn't hear a big difference and i would tend to agree with you on loudness.  I may do what you did (taking signal from the rears using my DSP).

 

Question on the dash tweeters - are they 3 1/2" or 2 1/2?  I checked them out on Crutchfield and they are listed 3 1/2 but you wrote 2 1/2.

 

Also, how tight is the Kicker fit under the seats?  If I go full bore I will need to figure out how to get everything under the rear seat - unless there is someway to get behind the rear seats, i tried to find a way to release the upper seat backs on the dealer lot but couldn't seem to find a way to do it.

My bad...3 1/2.  I remember seeing something that the seat back wasn't meant to be removed...i.e. very hard to get to everything.  I'll take a pic of the sub under the seat.

appreciate it and you've given me a lot to think about.  are you planning on securing the sub and if so how?

 

doing the math - I will need a $350 loop harness and a good bit of space under rear seats to use my existing 5ch amp.  if i use my DSP, get a small mono or bridged 2ch amp and the solobaric 10" it will cost about $450.  However, if i use my subs, DSP, and just buy a 1 or 2-ch amp it will be around $150.

 

I have two Kenwood KFC-XW1200F eXcelon 12 inch Shallow Subwoofers with sub-par boxes (not enough volume).  I do like some thumps\ in my system and am curious if you are able to "feel" the bass with the kicker? (Not talking about license plate rattling but a good kick inside the truck for heavy bass music).

 

I found on the Silverado 1500 forum the procedures to fold down rear seats, so when I finally get the truck i will try and see how much room is back there.  I assume this carries over to the HD.

If anyone knows, is the Crew Cab the same under seats for the HD's as the 1500s?  I am looking at a Stealth Box:

I believe the whole interior is the same, also the additional larger GM underseat storage is the same part number for HD and 1500’s. I can’t confirm that but someone else did in another thread. So I think you’re safe.

I am probably having an outfit in Portland gut the whole Bose system and throw it in the trash, and I'm sure they can fab up a box, but it sure would be nice if it fit.  I had a stealth box two trucks ago and it really was butter.  You just know it is going to be perfect volume for the drivers if JL makes the box.

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
