Hello everyone, I've been lurking on the forums for the past few months and decided to finally post some of my questions. I'm new to the truck world, always had a car/suv up until I bought my 2014 Sierra Denali last fall. I love the truck so far, zero complaints - BUT I want to add my own touches to it this summer. I've been looking into getting into some mods over the summer months and found a set of 22x14 wheels that I really like.

My question for all the wheel/suspension guys here is

1) what would I need to modify on my truck in order to get these to fit? If I need a lift, what's the minimum I can get away with?

2) what would be the optimal tire size?

All depends on what height you want to go... I have a leveled 2500 on 20x10's on 33's and I need to do a good amount of cutting fender to get them to fit. To fit 14 wides on a 1500 youll no question need a 4 inch lift maybe even a 6 inch lift or you'll have to do major cutting...maybe be able fit only 33's with the 4 inch lift.

Thanks for the info KMGZ400 - that's what I figured. I'm hoping I can get away with a 4 inch lift and avoid cutting. Or I might have to think about going to 22x12 instead if that will make a difference. Unfortunately the wheels I am looking at don't some in 22x12 so I'll be back to square one with trying to decide which ones to go with.

You'll need a 6" to 22x14 on 33" tires to avoid rubbing. The hard part will be finding a 33" tire wide enough for that width of rim. Be prepared to start changing ball joints, bearings and other associated parts in the front end at 25,000 to 30,000 miles. It will put a large amount of extra stress on the frontend.

What backspacing/offset are they? If they stick way out of the fenders, chances are your gunna have to cut a lot. Best way to figure out if your dead set on them is to buy a wheel, loosely bolt it up, and measure it out. Someone has to pull the trigger somewhere along the lines with things like this haha.

I don't have the exact offset number, but they are fairly aggressive and would be sticking out of the fenders. The more I think about it I'd rather get a different wheel/tire set up instead of having to do any cutting etc. Or lift it so much that it's no longer practical. What's the most aggressive (or biggest) wheel/tire set up you guys have heard of at stock height or just a leveling kit? Either in a 22" or 24" wheel.

22 x 14 with a -44 offset you are going to need at least a 7-9 inch lift. I'm running 22 x 12 -44 and set a 8 inches with no problems. If I would have stayed at 7 inches I would have had to trim.

To do this right you will need 10-12" of lift, that is running 22x14's with -76 as most are with 37's that give you 13.5 width on the tire. Yes, you can run a 33" or 35" tire that is 12.5" wide but a 12.5" wide tire on a 14" wheel looks like a joke, that is just IMO, the fact is you will not only lose any off road capabilities but you will even have to be careful on road to not rip the tire off of the wheel.

I am running a 9" lift and I will be going to 20x12 -44 wheels with 37x13.5 tires and that still might rub a bit in the back fender wall at full turn.

For what it's worth I would never go over a 12" wide wheel on a light duty frame and set up. I know plenty of people do it but people also buy 100K Skylines and wreck them at the track...doesn't make it smart...lol

Thanks for all the input guys, lots of good information in this thread!

Looks like I might have to revisit my approach to how I want the truck to look. Maybe go for a bigger 24" wheels and a leveling kit. I think if I go 24x10 I might get a bit of rubbing at full lock but nothing major. Thoughts?

That might be a little much for my tastes... I think 20x10 on some 33 MT's leveled would look good, will need to do some trimming

This is a very big personal decision, we spend a lot of money modding our trucks and it should be for us and nobody else.

What you are talking about is more of a street look, you would run 24's with street tires like you would see on an Escalade a lot. This is a very different style than trying to lift it and get aggressive stance and tires.

You can run 24's with street tires without anything and 26's with street tires with a level. The tires will end up being low pro, but that is the look you would be going for in this case.

If you are looking for a aggressive look without a lift, the comment above is right on, do some 20x10's with 33's on a level and you will be looking good.

The biggest question here is what type of tires are you going to be running. Offroad (AT or MT) or Street tires? I can tell you this much that with a 35" tire and -24 offset I was rubbing about halfway to full lock forward and reverse. So a -44 offset and even a 33" tire you will be rubbing before full lock on the corners of the wheel well front and back.

24 inch rims with mud tires would look very odd... And even 12 or 14 wides might be a little extreme on a stock height truck anyway

Thing is gonna be chewing up parts @ w/ a lift that high and tires/wheels that big, and you'll be down considerably on power - on a diesel HD no big deal as they already are very powerful/torquey and can always up the boost/tune, but I never understand doing this to a 1500 unless you're also swapping gears and doing some power adders - bolt-ons in the very least....at which point you could have bought an HD in the first place.

If you're just going for the "dub" look then I don't think you need to lift it at all w/ 24"s, just going to end up having like a 2" sidewall and it'll ride like hell and knock your fillings out - again something else I don't get, Denali on 24"s LOOKS super luxury and will ride worse than a rigid chopper lol! Unless you want to add some airbags.....although I guess if you have the magnaride and drop the sidewall just a bit it isn't too much different than the factory 22"s, but 14" wide seems a bit extreme to me.

At the end of the day its your ride and your money do what you want, but any extreme mod in one direction will inevitably mean sacrificing something in the other, which is why I always try to find "balance" in the mod game....like I wouldn't be the guy who superchargers his camaro on the stock suspension, clutch, tires, brakes etc. so I end up w/ a vehicle w/ a ton of power that can't stop, turn, hook up etc.

Same goes for the extreme lft guys - you may spend the dough on a full suspension lift and tires, and it may look the part, but w/ 3.42 gears and 355 or even 420 HP, super heavy tires, you're really not any better offroading than a stock truck other than ground clearance, in terms of power to the ground you're heavier and down on torque and gears, what's the point?

    • I find it amusing the OP doesn’t realize this threads heading includes several engines. He should have posted in the off topic section if he wanted a more narrow focus. I really appreciate and find amusing that he actually pointed out one of my many vehicles. The Odyssey. That happens to use 0-20 oil. I love pushing his buttons.
    • Maybe, but it seems he is the only one that has backed up data to prove what he is stating. I think he is doing this more because he enjoys it and wants to get the information out to us. He's got the knowledge and access to the proper equipment and having the funds doesn't hurt.  I would love to do what he is doing and would do it if and when I hit the Powerball.  I'm not a Tribologist by any means but love to learn what I can.   I would bet there would be doubting people out there if a completely independent lab with high quality work and highly respected in the automotive industry, put out information like this.  The world can't be pleased, one just has to take the information that they are given, do more of their own research to find actual lab data to back up what they are trying to figure/find out.  Most don't bother, they just want to believe what they first see.     I don't have the minimax but my 6.2 in my 2019 Silverado with 64k miles shows excellent UOA results with 0w-20 and for my own purposes 5w-20.  Since not much of a change using 5w. I liked the data sheet information on the SS 5w-20 and figured I would give it a try.  Still the same viscosity at 100℃.   In the end we all just do what makes us happy, life is too short to get upset over trivial social media.   On a side note, I do feel GM has dropped the ball and just cares about the bottom dollar and not quality anymore.  "Like a Rock" has been long gone.  Seems "Built Ford Tough" has as well.
    • Better than stock but that's like putting lipstick on a pig
    • Hello, my 3 month old Sierra Elevation wont recognize a trailer with electric brakes? All the lights work correctly, but no power to the brakes?   This is the factory installed brake controller. If you manually push the knob, the display shows the power % but does not light up like my 2022 silverado.   I have an appointment with the dealer, but was checking to see if anyone else has seen this issue.    Thanks,
    • Been using SS 0w-20 from new, but wanted to change to the 5w-20 because I liked the data on the data sheet, to me it seems like a little better product. But as you can see, not much difference. This is also with running a mix of 10 gallons E85 to a tank topped with 93. It isn't a flex fuel vehicle so any higher I get a CEL for running lean on both banks. Yes my mileage takes a hit. Instead of 20 mpg I normally get on trips I get 17mpg. This is also using EaO17 filter.  What is amazing is I have the AMSOIL cone filter on it since I have the GM Performance intake installed and that air filter has 44k miles on it.  I just take it out and shop vac it off once a year.  I use the upholstery tool on my shop vac.  Works well.
