The Chevy Bolt battery electric car is due to be shown for the first time at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. You're mostly a truck fan with a bit of a muscle car fetish, so what the heck do you care? Well, simply put, it is in your financial interests that this car succeed. GM has to sell zero emissions vehicles in order to meet government mandates in 12 states including the largest car market in the U.S. (California). Car makers like GM have been putting off the inevitable for many years, and in some cases they pay other car companies that have extra zero emissions credits for them in order to comply. Would you rather see GM handing Tesla $15K per car credit it needs or selling cars built in its factories and minimizing its losses on green cars?

There are a lot of practical reasons a GM family might want to see a Bolt succeed. Eventually, the rebates and hand-outs are going to be too good to ignore for families that want an affordable second car for commuting and around town. The Bolt with a 200 mile range will very likely be a steal once the market has other longer range EVs competing with it.

EVs are coming. Let's give the Bolt a friendly welcome.

just as long as the Bolt doesn't run into the same problem that doomed the 1st gen Volt to be nothing more than a curiosity: be prohibitively expensive. I saw a 2nd Gen Volt at the Nashville Auto show, and saw the Price FINALLY Dropped by $8,000!

exciting ions and storing them is getting smarter all the time.

The more the merrier. competition drops prices, they get their credits..

and the working or tough crowd enthusiasts, in the bigger engines can go on in peace with the good stuff.

GM should not be proud about a 200 mile range. This car will fail because of that. Especially up north in cold climates where electric cars see a heavy reduction in run time.

Planned run is 30,000 per year, if they sell. Which the volt didnt do so hot last summer and that plant was idled for a month or two. Only time will tell

I'd rather see the feds so something useful and bar the idiots in CA from making their own stupid rules that force automakers to build and sell vehicles that people won't buy and that lose them money. But I do hope it works out for them. Tesla is the industry leader but they're far too expensive for most people and the Leaf is a joke. This car has a sort of usable range and doesn't look stupid.

If I was only making short trips, I think electric makes sense.

Fuel burning engines crud up if never driven up to temp.
