GM and cheap materials for car seats

Recommended Posts

Who else feels that GM went cheap on the car seat material? My Silverado has less than 3k miles and I've owned this for only 4 months yet the wear on it appears as bad as our CR-V we've owned since new from 2011. I hate to see how in 5 years these seat will look like.

But this is unacceptable for a $40,000 truck.

It's people sliding in and out that gets them quick. Not saying it's acceptable but I make sure my wife and kids use the running boards for this reason. I'm tall enough where I only have to slide if the running boards are out and in my way. So they are disengaged when I'm alone and engaged when I have passengers.

The CRV being shorter you have less wear from sliding since people are not jumping out or sitting on the edge to then slide over in the taller truck. That's been my experience anyways...

Yes we use the running boards but we're not tall folks but I try not to slide in and out or out in. For us the CRV would be a higher to get in since it has no running boards, I actually stand on the truck's running board before sitting (which doesn't seem to help).

I plan to keep this truck for a long time so I hope it lasts. On another note, I did get the extended warranty (bumper to bumper) so worse case.. get it replaced if it goes bad.

are you a heavy guy?

Also that wont be covered under any extended warranty, GMPP or aftermarket. Get it replaced at 35,000 miles. Don't do it before that type of this is usually covered once, and clean your seats before you go in

19years? good for you I say.......I now have to do the maintenance on my wife's Nissan as it's out of warranty and I was shocked when I got underneath it recently?

Honestly has to be the cheapest looking underbody/unibody I have seen....It's all stamped baby!

Oh....and she does not like leather in Phoenix so I understand but I told her the fabric just gets beat up and hard to clean etc. Nope she bought the fabric anyway and a few years down the road it's all just falling apart! But remind you I never drive it just a feather lite woman and it's all it takes.

Of Note: I am the only one it seems that THANKS GM for keeping the hard plastic on lower parts of doors! YOU CAN KEEP IT CLEAN! THE SOFT TOUCH IS CRAP AT BOTTOM OF DOORS!

that's from sliding in and out. I noticed mine started that. Now I just don't slide on it. Simple fix.

Nope, I'm 175 and my wife is 125. So, no I don't consider myself heavy, overweight LOL but not heavy. Its good to know it's not covered under extended warranty. Makes me think twice and might consider canceling it sometime soon.

I don't slide in either, I usually stand on the running boards before sitting but I guess you can't avoid sliding a bit.

Yep, the last Nissan I owned was in 1998. LOL Anyways, I still think the seat material is cheap compared to my 2008 subaru forester and the CRV. I've owned a lot of cars over the past 25 years , 5 brand new and the rest used but New shouldn't worn or seen to worn down so fast. But given this is my first GM car (or GM truck) I don't know how to compare quality, the rest is all Honda's and Toyotas'.

I have actually been happy with the seats in my recent GM's

06 GTO had the BEST leather sport buckets I have ever experienced. top notch all around

wifes 2010 Malibu had the half leather half suede seats, very much liked those, held up and looked brand new when we traded it at 75k miles

11 Camaro SS, average but In no means cheap

wifes 14 ATS at 23k miles the seats have held up great still look new. leather is supple and comfortable

15 Z71 my only complaint is the material under the leather used for the heating/cooling, it makes crackling noises if you press on the right areas when there is weight on it

I had my 2014 Silverado for 3 years and it was terrible on the cloth seats. I hope my 16's leather seat hold out much better than that.
