GM and cheap materials for car seats

I had my 2014 Silverado for 3 years and it was terrible on the cloth seats. I hope my 16's leather seat hold out much better than that.

 

I'm currently looking at covers to help reduce wear & tear.

I agree wholeheartedly. I came from a few Audis and BMW's with leather, and knowing how poor the fabric was on the 2015 Sierra SLE I had my eye on, I budgeted for adding Katskinz leather to it as soon as I could book the shop to do the install. In the 2 weeks I had the truck with the stock dark grey cloth, I could already see the wear on the bolsters from getting in and out of the truck. One nice advantage of leather, is that you slide in and out, and there are no wear spots, or wrinkles like there were with the cloth.

 

Highly recommend you get a professional installer to do the work,. The difference in how tight the finished product is is night and day.

I don't think the wife would let me do it. LOL she barely lets me do anything on the truck. But that would be an option. I don't think i'm worried about just the fabric but also the foam under it as well.

You've got to watch the sliding in and out, and things in your pockets, or key rings, wallets, etc.. If you have the cloth type seats and want to protect them, look at seat covers. There are many different types, styles, patterns available. I like the clazzio seat covers. Checkout truckleather or maybe ebay.

I have also been super happy with the leather. It is just as nice as our BMW and Mercedes IMO.

I think the seats in my father in law's 2006 Silverado are more comfortable than the seats in my 2014.

 

Not a big deal to me really, but it's something I've noticed.

Leather really is not leather these day, I think like ferrari and maybe a couple more very high end use true leather. The rest use bonded leather which is a stretched out piece of hide that is sprayed with layer upon layer of polyurathanes. It looks nice but it is about as close to real leather as I am a rocket scientist. Likewise if you are not paying 10k+ for a couch there is no way it is real leather and instead this stuff. It actually holds up to daily use better than a cured leather hide so there is that.

They're all crap. My buddy has a 2009 Ram with cloth seats. His driver seat has a 4" long hole in the door side bolster. Truck has 102k miles on it.

A couple comments...

- If you look on Autotrader at used trucks (any make) you'll see lots of them with seat wear in that spot. Sliding off the seat like you're on a sliding board wears the cloth/leather and breaks down the foam underneath.

- The alternative is seat material that is thick and durable which also makes it hard and uncomfortable. I replaced the factory leather in my 2015 with the gray cloth covers from a 2016 that look just like yours because the leather was so hard it felt like I was sitting at a picnic table.

- I put Katzkin covers on my previous 2010 Silverado and after 25K miles the coloring was all worn off in that exact spot.

 

So unless GM or aftermarket suppliers start spending the money to make carbon fiber reinforced seat covers, using the running boards to stand up and step out instead of sliding out is about the only prevention.

Love the GM Leather in my 15. Got in my 1995 jeep wrangler the other day and it made me think my plastic seats were now leather. I feel much better about those old jeep seats now.
