2015 GMC Sierra - Brakes cooked at 16k miles. How...?!

Hmmm... I'll have to get this checked out. This is something the dealer should have no problem checking for me, right? Being that I just got the truck in Dec. of 2015.

They can, and I would certainly hope that they'd work with you. This just isn't normal at all.

I usually use a cheap infrared thermometer to help diagnose brake issues like this. You can just drive for awhile and then check the temps of the disc.

So they were definitely cooked. The inside brake pad on the driver was side was metal-on-metal. The passenger side was nearly there. The outside pads still had about half-life left. I still cannot believe these brakes went at 16k. I honestly cannot believe that I drive that aggressively, but I guess the proof is in the pudding. Time to slow down.

 

Slides stuck. Most common reason. Lack of lubrication. Even new it happens. That accounts for the uneven. The rest is all driver.

I would be surprised if the rotors are not a nice color blue.

I could see one of two if the slides were stuck or stiff...all four indicates something in the hydraulics isn't releasing to me...

Are the 1500s that much different than the 2500s? I've got 100k on the OE pads and will probably get 150k before they need replaced? And that's towing, hauling, and commuting 100 miles a day.

2500 brakes are massive, in comparison to the 1500.

 

(the increase in brakes on the 2011+ HD's makes them much bigger than the 2010 and earlier HD's as well)

FYI

 

I just ran into this today on my 2015 Sierra 1500 with 13,500 miles on it. Took it in for scheduled service, and during the inspection they noticed that the inside brake shoe on both front wheels was down to 1 mm and the rotors were scored. He informed me that the factory got some "bad parts" on some of the 15s and 16s.

 

He did replace pads and rotors on the front, both sides under warranty.

FYI, just wanted to contribute I have the same issue. No crazy driving, 2015 Sierra 1500 Denali and the driver side inner was less than 5% at a little over 20k miles. The left outer was below 20%, and both the right side pads had close to 80% remaining. Fortunately I saved the pads so I have pics. I got it at the dealer now and they’re trying to give me some BS about “bad compound” used on the pad.. apparently only the driver side. Bottom line is 2 techs advised me it’s a known issue to GM but the service manager is denying it. 

 

Guessing they know its a problem, but either don’t have a fix or trying to downplay it so they won’t have to do a recall.

Did my front pads and rotors at 52k the other day. Pads looked barely worn. Rotors were out of plane however. And I’m not a gentle driver.
