OEM RSE Overhead Screen Install

I have finally got around to finalizing the install of the OEM RSE system for my 2016 Silverado HD. This was the only option that I wanted that my pickup did not come with so I am extremely happy this is done and so is my son! I would like to give a BIG THANKS to Anthony and John at MVI (www.gm-navigation.com) as they are extremely knowledgeable and their customer service is top notch. I purchased MVI's in-dash Blu-ray and RSE kits along with the unlocked HMI module and added their HDMI input and third brake lamp camera with switch. The unlocked HMI is definitely worth the money over a Lockpick as you have full control while in motion and don’t have to worry about the Lockpick failing as I had 2 of 2 fail in my old 2010 Silverado. MVI supplied most of the parts though I did source a few parts from the dealer as I did vary a little from MVI's kit as I wanted the RSE controls in the center console which their current kit does not yet have but was told it is on their to-do list with many other projects. Their HDMI kit requires the RSE controls as you tap into those inputs. I removed one of the cigar lighter outlets in the front of the center console and mounted the HDMI input there. If you stick to their kit, the install is fairly simple IF you have a sunroof. Once again, MVI offers great customer service in case you do run into any glitches. They are also a vendor on here as well if you did not know.

 

NOTE: ***NON-SUNROOF VEHICLES***

You do need a new headliner if you don't have a sunroof as you need the mounting bracket for the screen which offsets the screen from of the original position of the overhead dome lamp leaving ts existing hole exposed. On sunroof vehicles, the dome lamp and screen use the sunroof frame to mount to and you just enlarge the existing dome lamp hole.

Unfortunately not... But been toying w idea of adding suede headliner, so this might be my perfect "excuse".

Perfect excuse!!! I've always wanted to do that as I love the Mercedes AMGs that have the suede. You'd definitely need to post pics if you do.

 

You've probably already thought of this but if they re-wrap your headliner, you should be able to cut the hole for the screen and have them fill the dome lamp hole with that piece and you wouldn't be able to tell. If you look closely at one of my pics, image 3, you can see where the dome lamp would go on the new headliner as it's almost "pre-stamped" to be cut at the factory. At the very least, if it was noticeable, it wouldn't be more than that. I considered having my headliner re-wrapped but no one remotely close to me does that so I just forked out the money for a new headliner which cost me $687 (wholesale).

 

A co-worker had his Dodge Dakota headliner wrapped in suede when I live in the DFW area by a local shop and it was around $450 with him pulling the headliner if my memory hasn't failed me. I imagine it'd only be a little more than that for a Silverado due to size. Just remember it's a tight fit squeezing the headliner through the left rear door. An extra hand would be extremely helpful in order not to tear/scratch the headliner, especially if suede. Good luck!

Hi new to the forum here. I have a 17 denali hd and want to do the rse install with the factory gear like you did. I want the rear rse inputs as well. Already talking with mvi about the kit. How did you stray away from theirs with the rear inputs. I want it all to look like it came from the factory.

I can get some pictures taken as that is one thing I forgot to take pictures of.  The screen itself is wired to the disc drive along with the inputs from the rear of the center console.  There is also a blue USB type cable that connects the overhead screen, the disc drive, the dash screen and the HMI if I remember correctly.  I don't know of other options out there however the HDMI input that I used from MVI is spliced into the RCA inputs that is on the back of the console so it inputs to the disc drive.  Since the screen is 720p, you won't have true HD resolution but since they are only 8" and 9.2", it doesn't matter IMO.  What I've used the input so far for, everything has looked great.  As of 2017, GM removed both the SD card input and the RCA input and now there is a factory HDMI input and 2 USB inputs on the back of the console.  If you've thought about installing the 2017 parts and harness, I don't recommend it as there are more changes than just those for the rest of the truck but someone else may have more input on that.  Once again, you don't get true HD resolution but it gives you the input so you can add modern devices/gaming consoles easier.  There is also an area that I tapped into for the power supply on the USB port on the input from MVI which is at the connector for the console harness where it connects to the dash harness.  If you purchase the HDMI input from MVI, they will have the wires labeled on where to splice into at or at the very least come with instructions on where to splice.  I may be able to take the console apart later today and get you pictures, at least sometime this weekend.

I'm trying to piece things together myself. For the past year Ive been trying to source the 17 HDMI input parts and find out if its possible to retrofit. But no one seems to know. 

 

Indiwork makes a plug n play HDMI input kit and also an android box that plugs into it. I'm trying to figure out if its possible to route the video from it to the RSE. That way I can use the hotspot and my DirecTV app on the rear screen for my son to watch.  Proformance Diesel has a preorder for an android setup for the mylink but I'm not sure how it's setup.

Depending on your phone, what I've done would display your phone on the screens but you'd still have to control everything on your phone and may need additional parts, i.e. MHL adapter etc.  I've been considering getting a Fire Stick or something to use with my HDMI input linked to my Wi-Fi and see if it would work seamlessly. 

 

I would like to see those setups in person.  I've seen video of the android setup that Performance Diesel is preordering and definitely want it!!! 

 

Based on what you're trying to do, I didn't take any pictures as I thought this would be more beneficial to what you're trying to do as I wrapped my harness back up and you can see anything beneficial. 

 

From the 12-pin connector for the rear console controls/inputs, these are the circuits I spliced into:

 

Pin #4 - White Wire - Right Aux Audio

Pin #5 - Yellow Wire - Left Aux Audio

Pin #6 - Yellow Wire - Aux Video

Pin #11 - Brown Wire - Aux Audio Common

Pin #12 - Bare Wire - Aux Video Common

 

I spliced in accordingly for my HDMI input.  I assume you would need a new connector for the 2017 input, but you may be able to re-pin your harness accordingly and get it working, hopefully.  I'm not sure if both the USB inputs would be operation or only just one if you went that route though.  I can't find any wiring info for the 2017+ controls through my resources but someone who works for GM may be able to get you some info.  I would assume MVI would be able to find this info if you wanted to reach out to them.  There is also another vendor on here, pgamboa (Phil Gamboa) who I'm following as he is very knowledgeable and has done numerous things to his 2016 LT.  He may also be able to dig up some information on this.  Hopefully this helps you and if you get it working, definitely let me/us know.

...following. In my center console retrofit and circuit observations, I noticed a 2nd Aux Input. For the life of me, I couldn’t figure what this was for... it never dawned on me that this was for RSE. So while I closed the book on a use case for this 2nd Input, I might reopen it for some use cases. Thanks for the detailed info!
