LOST BRAKING POWER AT VERY LOW SPEEDS

I HAVE A '16 SILVERADO 1500 5.3 W/ ABOUT 49K MILES. WHILE I WAS PARALLEL PARKING, AFTER THE 2ND PUMP, I REALIZED THE TRUCK WASNT STOPPING. I HAD TO USE BOTH LEGS TO MAKE IT STOP BEFORE HITTING THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. WHILE DOING THAT I FELT THE ABS KICKING IN. MY BRAKE PADS AND ROTORS ARE FINE. INSTALLED HIGH PERFORMEANCE ROTORS AND PADS LIKE ABOUT 10-15K MILES AGO. BRAKE FLUID IS FINE. I DO HEAR AN ABNORMAL NOISE COMING FROM THE ENGINE AREA AT ALL TIMES. KINDA LIKE A BAD PULLEY BEARING OR SOMETHING. NOTICED IT THE DAY THE TRUCK STARTED ACTING UP. WHILE DRIVING THE BRKAES WORKING FINE IT ONLY OCCCURES WHEN I AM PARKING AND AFTER LIKE THE 2ND PUMP I HAVE NO BRAKES. ALSO IF I TAKE IT TO THE DEALER, DOES IT FALL UNDER THE POWERTRAIN WARRENTY OR BASIC?

Your vacuum pump has most likely failed.  It is your power assist for braking.  If your looking at the engine from the front, it’s the very bottom pulley to the right.

X2 on the vacuum pump.  I'd be looking for oil in the hoses to and from it.  If that's the case, expect to replace the pump, hoses,  brake booster and master cylinder as engine oil would have contaminated the brake booster and is causing the loss of assist.

PIT5361C: Diagnostic Tip - Additional Brake Pedal Effort - (Mar 15, 2017)

Condition/Concern

In some rare situations, a customer may comment on a hard brake pedal or that increased effort is needed to depress the brake pedal.  Also, in some cases a tick or ticking noise may be heard, which may sound like an exhaust manifold leak.  While performing normal diagnostics, fluid may be found in the brake booster and/or the booster vacuum line.

Important: Pay close attention to the fluid and if it is determined to be engine oil, it could be coming from the vacuum pump. The vacuum pump is belt-driven and mounted to the side of the engine block.  It is lubricated by pressurized engine oil.

Recommendation/Instructions

If engine oil is found, it is important the following parts are replaced. If not, the condition will return.

  1. Vacuum Pump
  2. Vacuum Line between the booster and the pump
  3. Brake Booster
  4. Master Cylinder

It would be under bumper to bumper (3/36) most likely.

Yep, like the two before me stated, its the vacuum pump. Just replaced mine with the lines last month.

Mine went out pulling into the driveway. Good thing the 4wheeler was in front to stop me or I would have gone through the garage wall.

Thanks GM!

Dont you still have unassisted brakes if the vacuum pump goes out?

Yes as far as I know.

It just takes pushing the brake pedal harder.

This except there is a newer version of the PIT that tells them to change a few more components.

My 2015 had this happen 3 times, totally random, over about a year and a half.  I argued with the dealership that I wanted this PIT done since I didn't trust driving the truck and it was a safety issue.  They finally gave in and performed the PIT.

That was 4 months and 2000 miles ago and the issue hasn't happened since.  As a side note I had the dreaded "it's just the normal DI tick sound" on my 5.3 but it has gone away since they changed out the vacuum pump!

YUP!! That is exactly what is happening and also when the time comes to slam on my brakes bcuz of these stupid LA drivers cutting me off, the truck wont stop at all AND I have the brake pedal to the floor! I contacted my nearest chevy dealer and was told that the vacuum pump is under basic warranty  (3/36). This should be safety recall in my opinion. SMH

Why not try using the emergency brake if this happens instead of hitting something that could damage your trucks?

when you are concentrated on parking and going at slow speeds through a parking lot and your brakes suddenly go out or someone cutting you off at the last second, you don't really think of using your e-brake bro.

Be a part of some change?  They've got a phone # or you can fill it out online.  I'd hope that others have possibly done this, or should be prompted to do it if they've had the issue.  The more grease the squeaky wheel gets...

I checked my Work Order.  They actually performed revision "B" which also told the Tech to replace the Vacuum Pump Belt and the A/C Compressor Belt (see "Parts Information" section in the attached file).  They must have eliminated those from rev "C" ...

E brake is the last thing going through my mind as Im pulling in my parking spot with my foot on the break peddle when all of a sudden the peddle wont move.

And the parking break is a very high strange angle to get at when you have seconds to think, it’s no hand break

    • A little girl said her prayers every night before bed and she asked G d to watch after each person she loved. One night she forgot to pray for her babysitter and her babysitter died. A few days later she forgot to pray for someone else and they died. The next night she forgot to pray for her dad. The next morning her dad was terrified. A bus almost crashed into him. He almost fell off a fifty foot ladder and almost wrecked on the way home. When he arrived home, he said I had a terrible day. His wife replied, “You think you had a bad day? My aerobics teacher died during class.
    • Nice! I had one here, once. The car dealer I used to haul for stopped by with it. That was over 10 years ago now. Those are SUPER rare these days, especially up here! Never even see them at car shows anymore.   https://postimg.cc/0rvcNZ1W
    • I remember watching one of the auctions on TV. It just happened that they had two little red express trucks. My brother bought one new in 1979, still has it. So I hung on to watch them cross. The retro redone example brought more bids and went for more money than the original one did. My brother has redone his 3 times and raced it. He’s now in the process of making more tame for cruising.
    • I always upgraded the suspension and steering components - bushings and ball joints, and had older cars that I could out-corner ANY modern car with. I used to be able to take my '78 Cutlass on off-ramps at stupid speeds and make the sharp MA corners without even squealing the tires. So much fun. My '72 El Camino must've had work done by the previous owner, since that thing seemed to handle even better than the '78.   I think the suspension & steering on the '72 was much more advanced than the '64, so that probably just made a good system even better.   I'm the same way with vehicles. I hate having to worry about the paint on my '93 W250 Cummins. I'm not used to that, lol.   https://postimg.cc/mzKr55sY
    • BEAUTIFUL!! That a Cutlass F85? Or 442? My side-ID skills are lacking thanks to failing memory, lol. Love that color & year, too!   Yeah I was never big on entering my own stuff, but I always liked seeing what everyone had, the rare models, and what's been modified. That was always fun. These days I have barely enough time to do what needs to be done at home.    Oddly enough, here in MA there are more car shows than ever in history! You'd think up here it would be dead, but it's bigger than EVER!          Took the 940 for its maiden voyage with the carburetor. At first I couldn't get out of the yard! This originally had the "Bosch" system (our other 940 has Regina - single fuel pump in fuel tank, and space-age-looking ignition coil on driver's fender) - that has dual fuel pumps. One in the tank, and one under the center left of the vehicle. I had unplugged the external one thinking I wouldn't need it with the carburetor ... but the way I have the pressure regulator hooked up, 90% of the fuel volume is going back to the fuel tank, so cranked all the way down, the regulator is only supplying a hair above 3.5 PSI to the carb. Turns out the in-tank pump (15 PSI alone, instead of 45) couldn't handle the load. Plugged it back in and went for a rip. Ran great!   Throttle response is always amazing with carburetors. ZERO delay that no FI system can reproduce. Also fires up in half the crank rotations as before. Low end power was DRAMATICALLY improved. There was an ongoing lean issue with the FI that I got tired of figuring out, so this is a MASSIVE improvement! Above 50 MPH on hills it feels SUPER weak, though. This is more than likely due to the timing not being advanced enough by the computer, since it believes there are multiple failures. I can live with that through the winter. Will keep me from passing slowpokes where I shouldn't and getting speeding tickets at least. 😁
