I put a Range in my 15 5.3 2 months after buying it, truck rides so much better and my MPG actually improved by almost 1 MPG. I don't have an issue with the technology, I had a 2007 Dodge Magnum with the 5.7 HEMI with MDS and that system worked great, When you were cruising it would cut down to 4 cylinders and as soon as you started to press on the gas more it switched back to 8 and off you went. The GM system is awful, there's too much lag between when I press the gas and when it gives you back 8 cylinders and it makes acceleration very jerky, which is probably why so many people think the transmissions suck. Based on this chart, if I was buying a 2019 (Which I absolutely won't do, it looks awful,) I'd buy another LS with a basic 5.3 with AFM and put another Range in it, and as a bonus I don't have to worry about disabling start/stop every time I get in it either.

At 22k miles, my 2017 5.3 with AFM has been seamless. Unless you’re looking at the display, you can’t tell when it changes modes.

I've heard of several with failing injectors right out of the gate, and this was several months back. All less than 3k miles, some less than 700 mi..
 
That's the joy of buying new - you don't really know how "great" a deal you got until you're well out of the warranty period.

I have at least 8 friends I can think of the newer model trucks (2015+). Not one has had AFM related issues. Knock on wood!

My truck is an LS with the basic monochrome HUD so it doesn't display which mode the engine is in. I can tell by exhaust note (with stock exhaust) and by the performance when you hit the gas. there a really bad delay before it kicks back to 8.

I hate the AFM in my 2018 Silverado.  Dealership told me to put it in L then select 6 and it'll run v8 all the time.  Gas mileage obviously went down. But I'd rather that than the afm v4 to v8 switch

I have DFM in my new 2019 Silverado 5.3 V-8 and I've noticed it lags a lot. I hit the gas and nothing happens for a second then comes the surge of power. Not sure if it's the DFM but it's likely.

That’s strange because I have absolutely no lag at all. If I hadn’t been told the engine has DFM, I’d never know.

Not really. By the time I take my foot off the brake, it’s fired back up and hit the throttle and go. I thought I’d hate the auto/stop feature, and figured I’d be turning it off every time I got in the truck, but it’s really not an issue.

I can tell the auto start \ stop is happening but it's so quick it's not a hindrance at all.  By the time you go from brake  to gas it's ready.  I do think the DFM helps as well.     I could live without the auto start \ stop but i do enjoy the mileage i'm getting on a 2019 either way.

Same here, had auto/stop off and the lag is really bad, as if it needs to gather its composure. That's why I think it's DCM. Really have no idea but will have that checked.

I couldn't tell when it was on in my 2015 except by the light, and can't tell in my 2020 either.......and I wish there was a light in the 2020s. I do not have the Dynamic AFM.

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O. 
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
