If you are just looking to replace the stock shocks I'd suggest the Bilstein 4600's. Per Bilstein they have the same valving minus any lift capability.

Awesome. Thanks for that. Now off to search for a set!

For those who prefer the silver body with black boot, go with the 5100s. 5100 has a slightly longer rod for leveled trucks.

The 4600 is identical in internal valving but painted yellow with a blue boot.

5100 is more attractive if you ask me  The 4600 reminds me of a cheap looking Monroe shock.

There would be no harm in keeping the 5100 at the bottom snap ring groove/stock position.

@Sierra Dan I agree that the silver/black of the 5100's does look better, but @2kwik4u stated no desire to level, and wanted options. Hence the suggestion for the 4600. Another would be the Eibachs.

I do like the look of the 5100's over the 4600's. Local 4WheelParts outlet has both in stock. $279 for the 4600's and $379 for the 5100's.

For that little bit extra I'll probably go with the 5100's just for the look.

If I had a money tree I'd figure out how to adapt a set of QA1 double adjustable coilovers onto the truck. Had those on a previous vehicle and dialing in the correct rebound and bound damping was awesome. Had multiple "preset's" figured out depending on what I was doing, and was able to adjust to those settings in minutes. Really cool setup, but easily 4 times the cost of some stock replacements.

Jay,

I was making note and pointing out the fact that 5100s will work in the stock setting configuration.

2kwik4u may prefer the silver look vs the yellow. Yes there is a price difference.

In his case it may be a matter of form over function.

I've run the 5100's for 50,000 miles on my 2016, set at the 3rd setting. I run 275/70R18 Cooper St/Maxx tires (33.3" tall). My truck is not level- it still has a rake, which is fine for me because I do haul loads. I also have Timberens in the rear to support heavy loads.

I'd say if you want 'level' go with the 4th setting. Be aware that towing or load hauling you will be really nose high as a result. I'd say get Timberens if your'e gonna tow or haul loads.

Here's how it looks in its' natural habitat.

Thanks for the replies.

This might end up being a "vanity" purchase just for the look of the 5100's. The do certainly look a good bit nicer than the 4600's.

Have to see how this tax return thing works out. Wife is already talking new couch. Don't tell her I've already ordered a new bed cover :D:D

Good day guys,

i have a question regarding the bilstein 5100s i love the looks of the silver ones but i have read somewhere that the stock setting on rear shock wont be exactly oem as slight lift will be there, unlike the 4600s which will give exact oem height settings. Is that correct? Anyone tried checking on this?

The rear shocks are not adjustable and will not add any lift. They will support up to a 1 inch lift, but you have to change the rear block for that. Hope that helps.

Thinking about the 5100s on the 3rd notch and running 285/60/20 trail graps. Currently have 275/60/20 terra graps and the rear blocked removed, does anybody have something similar to this set up?

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O.
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
