Just a thought I've been watching this thread - has this happened to the base / custom / custom work truck / custom trail boss - because these trucks if are a V8 have the L82 engine with AFM - just wondering maybe it's slightly different - the Lt and up models have that new dfm engine l84 - maybe different crimp - hose in different location - something different ??????

It’s likely going to be a wide spread problem. These things are automated. Even if the problem was caught early many vehicles would be affected. Reminds my of Cummins injector problems in the early 2000s. We only had two both were effective. One blew a tip on the interstate at night. Check engine light came on still too late. The other in town in the daytime saved the engine. The only way we knew it was wide spread is it was almost impossible to find injectors. We never got anything in the mail.

L82/L84/L87 use the same oil cooler lines.  They are the same as the K2 truck lines both L83 and L86.  We had three K2 trucks with under 36k miles that got oil cooler lines just this year.

Do they tend to leak at all if you’re looking closely before or do they often just blow without warning? Is one end or the other consistently the problem? Is there any better aftermarket replacement available?

It just happened to me today driving on the highway. Black smoke out the back end then Oil Preasure turn off engin. Then oil all over on the side of the road. Taking the truck in on Monday to get a run around. Thinking there is engin damage as well.

Is there any sign or symptoms that this catastrophic engine failure is about to occur, or does it just let go?

No warning in my case.

Mine was no sign at all. Just got a low oil pressure warning and that was game over.

Guys, bought my first truck ever Friday night, drove it 100 miles yesterday. Wife went to take truck and as she is pulling out of driveway noticed oil was all over ground under truck. I've had the truck for 1 day. No warnings or anything on dash, almost like it failed by sitting idle in driveway.

My friend is a BMW mechanic he took a look and guess it was oil cooler line. He also checked oil level and almost nothing on dip stick. Now I found this forum and it appears to be a widespread issue.

I am so nervous I just paid 34 K for a POS.

Will call dealer Monday and get towed. Any chance at extended warranty to cover possible engine damage?

  • I wonder if these lines are actually rubbing on something which is causing them to blow.  Even a small hole would cause the line to rupture completely given the pressure inside....

Anybody have a good picture of them on the truck?
