I’ve owned 7 and it’s my last one as well. GM is ridiculous. They can’t fix anything on these new trucks. They have zero customer service and really don’t even care. I fought for 7 months before they did anything. I just sat in the dealership as they worked on it and told everyone that came in there what issues I was having. Never did get it fixed. Had to file a BBB claim before anyone would acknowledge my issues. It’s a joke.

Question for everyone -

 

My truck has this issue too.  Is anyone aware of long term damage from this?  Wondering if it's a slight rub or actually chipping/wearing away/destroying something in the diff?

 

I'm willing to take a longer term view and make sure GM is aware of my issue but if worse comes to worse in a few years I'll swap the diff out with a junk yard unit myself.  I love the truck otherwise.

I just had the "fix" done to my truck yesterday(10/15/2020). New axle shaft, seals and the o-ring. So far so good, but I really haven't had the chance to drive it a good amount of time or distance. And the weather is turning cool/cold here in Wisconsin so it would take longer for the noise to happen. And from other posts I've seen some say the problem went away for a couple hundred miles after the fix, then came back. So I'm going to be listening for it to happen again and will come back here now and again to see how others are dealing with there's and to keep people informed on how mine is doing.

Mine was built in Indiana.  If you go look at them and scan the barcode on the B pillar you can see the build code.  I'm going to make sure when I get rid of this one that it doesn't have the SU4 axle in the new one.

Looks like the SU5 has the same noise.

No he didn't have the SU5 axle he has the SU4 which is made by American Axle the SU5 is made by GM. The SU4 is the only axle with this problem.

I'm just going by what he said in his post,  "I have the SU5 on my 2020 and it’s making the same sound.

It could be that it happens but the majority of this issue seems to be isolated to the SU4 axle. GM even calls out only that axle on the PIP document. Not saying it can’t happen to the other but the reporting from everyone who has the issue overwhelmingly points to the SU4.

Just curious if the SU5 axle is only for the single speed transfer case. Most of the issues seem to be either LT or RST.

Anybody with the single speed case have this issue?

I need help, has anyone received a settlement from GM to keep your truck? If so please PM directly as I’m in a hard spot with dealing with them.

Update on my 2020, Dealership has had my truck since last Wednesday. A clip in the front differential was stuck and they couldn't remove the portion they needed to in order to just replace the axle (stub shaft). GM approved a Front Diff replacement. Patiently waiting for my truck to be finished, and hoping that I don't have to go back... Followed the PIP / TSB

So I had that happen to me the first time they attempted the repair. If you don’t have the right tool, the actual GM stub shaft puller, it doesn’t pull evenly and breaks the clip. They pulled the front diff cover and had to use a wedge to pop the shaft out.

Dealership agreed mine has the issue last Wednesday and is ordering the parts to do the "fix".  I'm in the system.

Hey, I just ran into this issue. The tech spent 4 hours making a tool to pull the stub. Broke the clip, and cleaned out the broken pieces in the front diff since GM stated there are none for replacement right now... Just waiting for the front diff to explode now....

Yeah, same thing with mine on the first go around. I don’t think the diff will explode but I do think wear is a concern. The worst thing that you really could have happen in my opinion is premature bearing wear from the shaft walking. Heat is a big factor with getting my front diff to make sounds...

I was just being slightly dramatic haha. Mine made the noises turning left / right and after 4WD disengagement. I will continue to test the "fix" hoping for the best. The dealership didn't really help me out with the work order. I had a three page work order that basically looks like I only had one visit...

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
