Acceleration 6.2 or 5.3. Gears 3.42 or 3.73

Hi, never owned a truck before. I am keen to get one as I live in the country and would appreciate the flexibility of a pick up. I am not planning on towing anything except the odd light uhaul trailer. My priority is the best acceleration followed by fuel economy.

well the 6.2 will be harder on mpgs because its a bigger motor. the 5.3 and 3.42s will do wonderfully what for you want with acceleration and fuel economy. a tune on either one of the engines will do you wonderfully as well

Are you looking for acceleration that you can brag about (ie: super low 0-60 time, the ability to accelerate like a sports car?) or do you just want the ability to get onto the highway with confidence that the truck can "get out of its own way"?

If you want the quickest acceleration possible, get the 6.2L and 3.73 gears - no brainer. However, unless you've actually driven one of these trucks, you may not realize that even a 5.3L with 3.08 gears will actually accelerate quite respectably. The 5.3L w/3.42's will be that much better (it's a pretty common/standard setup).

The 6-speed transmission has really low gearing in the first couple gears, so it helps get the truck moving well, but you will still get very good mileage as well.

I've spent the last ~10 - 12 years with either a Camaro or Corvette in my driveway (until kids rolled along :() and I'm not completely disappointed with the acceleration capability of the newer pickups (no, it's not sub 5-second 0-60, but it's only a couple seconds off!).

FWIW, I've ordered a '14 Silverado with 5.3L and 3.42's. I think it will be a good all-round performer. Not top of the acceleration class, but still respectable :).

Hope that helps?

You've apparently got your priorities straight, so...6.2/3.73 NHT. Then, go out, have fun, amaze and surprise those around you!

I hope that the 6.2/3.73 setup starts to hit the dealers soon. I would love to drive one.

The 6.2 will run circles around the 5.3. AND is faster than Ford Ecoboost too. As far as fuel mileage, From all the post I've read I am getting around 1mpg less than a 5.3. Well worth the cost IMO. What's not fun about 400+ HP and TQ under your foot?? :driving: and the stock exhaust on these trucks sound great too

Wrong spelling. It's ego-boost

I'm all for a big v8 of course. But what you said is debatable. Custom tune vs custom tune the ego boost will walk a 6.2.

You want something fast. Buy a bare bones plain janer 4x4, save the 20k gm is gonna screw you on with pointless crap you don't need. Slap a blower and tranny upgrade in it. Let it eat.

Anything you buy for a truck will be a 14 second turd. The new 5.3 is slow too.

relax dude! LOL exactly the personality I imagine when I see one of those monster trucks going down the road. Damn since when did 355hp/383tq become weak? ANd 420/460 from the 6.2 is supercar numbers from a decade ago. Throw minor mods at the 5.3 and it will be sick - same goes for the 6.2

You want something fast? don't buy a 3 ton vehicle. Period.

Lol. You don't know me from a hole in the wall...

He said he wants to go fast, that's by far the cheapest way to go actual fast in a truck...not made up fairy tail land fast.

All personal attacks aside. Tell me more about how a vehicle that weighs 3 tons can't be fast? I personally know 2 Duramax guys with RCLB duramax's that are in the 12's with stock turbo/stock tranny. Lift pump and tune only. And they pull rv's on the weekend. One has over 200k miles and still gets 23-25mpg. As big and bulky as mine is it'll walk all over modern muscle cars as well. A guy I have on fb just broke record for fastest street driven crew cab Duramax the other day, ran 9.4xx.

My point is trucks can go fast. You can talk about decade old vehicles all you want, this isn't 10 years ago. This is 2013.

There's a guy over on the DF that owns ccsb LMM, lowered. Stock tranny with shift kit, lift pump and tune. THATS IT.

runs a consistent 12.9. Video on YouTube of him beating a z06 somewhere too lolololol
