High frequency noise coming from dash when in 4WD

I got a call from my dealership after having it in and they said they have a couple bulletins on noises but no fixes yet. So incredibly ridiculous.

 

Anybody that gets/sees this response, please reply with your name and VIN number and I'm going to submit a claim to the Better Business Bureau about this. GM has had zero positive responses in regards to this. I've been in contact with GM corporate even (not just dealerships) and it has gotten me nowhere. So maybe if we get a pile of people attached to a BBB claim, we'll get somewhere. Or maybe even better, everyone submits their own. But if you don't want to do your own, attach your info here and I'll do it.

Let me know if you need a list, I can send your our whole fleet that all do it.

I would love a list of your whole fleet. I want as many names and VIN numbers as I can for the BBB claim!

I posted on this topic back in Jan 2014 when I bought the truck.... It still makes the noise in 4 wheel auto and drives me insane. Its almost not worth using 4 wheel auto in the rain or ice because it makes me sick with headaches...

 

I have also recently been hearing a similar noise when my truck is in 2 wheel drive. It occurs under acceleration and sustained highway speeds. The radio does not drown it out either.

 

It doesn't seem like GM cares much about this issue....

I think you may just be hearing the transfer case being engaged and the engagement of the front differential. In normal 2wd driving the transfer case is not engaged, but the front drive shaft spins but the front diff is not engaged. So the spinning is not under load.

 

When in 4 auto or 4hi/4lo the transfer case is engaged and there is load being placed on the transfer case and front diff.

 

My 2002 was always "louder" when in 4wd. Same with my 2011 F150. More parts spinning = more sound.

 

I think this is accurate.

 

While it may seem like an electrical noise, it is most likely the drive line under load.

 

As a heavy haul truck driver, I can tell you that drive-lines can make all kinds of different noises. The variables are huge. Tire temperature, road surface temperature and texture, type of tread, wind, load, all kinds of things.

The way Ford and dodge do their auto 4wd is different than gm. If gm uses an encoder instead of a speed sensing switch like abs then it is possible the encoder is making the noise. Is gms 4wd more dependable than Ford? Idk my 08 was flawless. Some stuff has to be proprietary too and the gm auto 4wd is likely one of those. Being an industrial electrician dealing with servos and encoders all the time, I don't here electric noise any more as I have been over exposed to it and can just shut it out lol. Variable frequency drives have to be the noisiest thing going. A motor on a vfd at slow speed makes this whine too

To me it seems like it is coming from the switch and not the TCCM? am I crazy? I tried covering my TCCM with some dampening material but I can still hear it come from the switch

 

 

I don't see how a switch could generate that noise, likely it is the module, but it may sound like it's coming from the switch. We did get to see that they acknowledged the problem at one point, but the solution was to put sound deadening material around the module. The real fix is to replace the module with one that doesn't have an electrical design flaw, but we will never see that happen unless it causes 50 people's trucks to crash

 

 

Just Picked up my brand new 2015 Sierra SLT 4X4 this week and the next day had a huge snowfall, as soon as I put it in 4/auto I have been hearing the same high pitched intermittent chirp as everyone else has mentioned, other then that this truck is by far the quietest I have ever owned so its really makes this noise that much more noticeable.

 

Will definitely mention it to my dealer next time I bring the truck in but from the sounds of it there has been no luck in getting a proper replacement so far....

 

 

Mine does it too. Just noticed it for the first time today when I was researching my drivetrain/diff hum... I love this truck so much - all these issues is so disappointing (and pathetic considering the cost of these trucks).

2015 Chevrolet Suburban Tahoe

2015 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL, Yukon Denali 2015 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV

Equipped with 4 wd RPO NQH or NP0

 

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern

Some customers may comment on a high pitched whine noise from the vehicle noticed when driving in auto 4wd. The customer may comment that it is an intermittent noise and no noticeable pattern to when it can be heard.

 

Recommendation/Instructions

The transfer case control module on these vehicles is located next to the accelerator pedal and is not covered by any close out or hush panels.

When the transfer case control module has to move the transfer case actuator motor the higher current passing through the module causes an "electronic buzz or whine" within some of the capacitors in the module that can be heard by some of our customers.

Typically this can only be heard with all accessories and HVAC off and only when actuator movement is required. This does not indicate a concern with the module and should not be replaced to address this concern.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

negative, please read thru the thread, it is not a driveline issue, it's an electrical noise.

Yes, this has been posted before on this thread. While GM may call this a normal condition, it may be normal to them, but it's certainly not properly designed. The circuit should have been designed to take the higher current without making the noise. They need to fix the design and issue a recall. I don't see them ever doing that, but that is what has to be done.

It's not going to be a recall. Recall's are for safety concerns. If they ever do anything about it(which they wont) it would be a TSB.

Anyone had any mechanical issues with the front drivelines? In GMs efforts to be on the cutting edge of driveline technology, the Silicon Valley produced control module makes electronic noise in the circuitry. Can noise filters not be placed in the circuit? We put filters on noisy electronic circuits every day. How much more space is required to filter the noise in the tccm?

 

Anybody excited about the new generation gm PTWA bore sprayed aluminum blocks coming out in 2017-18?

Sometimes it makes you wonder what the actual engineering process is, and what GM testing is like.

 

A lot of the 2014/2015 issues and quirks with these trucks should have easily been identified during the testing stages of the design. How could GM spend years developing and testing this truck, and not notice drive line vibrations, loose seats, leaking on star antennas, drive line clunks....I mean come on. These engineers are supposed to be highly intelligent beings. So far, I am not overly convinced.

Perhaps it is because the test truck gets more than 48 seconds per component to install, or the QC on the tested part was good but 50 parts later the die was wearing or the part was cockeyed in the mold and it wasn't caught until the next QC which was 950 parts later and by that time the part was already shipped to the factory. My brother works at a Honda feeder plant and said one of the components they make (tie rod or ball joint) came apart right on the assembly line at the build factory. not everything can be protected against. Companies that QC every car: i'm thinking - Ferrari, Lambo, Morgan, Mclaren. 48 seconds on the gm assembly line is not a lot of time to get every component exactly as intended.

I guess that is true. Mass production is what hurts quality the most.

    • Have considered installing a DC to DC charger in your camper to replace your isolator?  
    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
