High frequency noise coming from dash when in 4WD

This drove me nuts when I first got the truck. This winter is the worst we've had in years so I actually had to use my 4WD quite often. I found that the sound is less of an issue for me now. I'm too focused at that point with everything else going on around me (i.e. - bad drivers) that this faint static sound is not a main focus for me. Do I think it shouldn't make any noise? You bet. But for the handful of times I use it, it won't bother me.

Everybody is different. I can easily pick up those high pitched noises. Mine will be insulated this spring before next winter.

I had this issue on my 16, as I'm very sensitive to high pitch noises. 16 was re-purchased by GM for unrelated issues. The 17 replacement has ZERO noise associated with shifting 4wd. Hope this helps getting a resolution from GM/ your dealer. I would challenge them join you on a test drive with a 17 and note that there is a difference, hopefully you get action.

THEY FINALLY FIXED MINE!!! Been talking to GM corporate since I bought my 2015 Silverado new, and just today, I got my truck back with the noise from the TCCM GONE! There's finally a bulletin on it. So bring your trucks to the dealer and if they can't figure it out, tell them it's the Error Bulletin PIP5261 and PIP5245 (are the two bulletins listed on my workorder/receipt from the dealership). They replaced my TCCM and apparently programmed it according to the bulletin and the noise is no more. Couldn't be any happier, if you couldn't tell! Finally!

I gave up fighting GM on the chime volume.  There is a PIT that instructs the Tech on how to turn the volume down but it didn't make much difference.  After that I even worked with the Infotainment Team Specialists and they weren't able to fix it.  I just bought one of these:

Get the 3" Rigid in the color to match your interior then plug it in and leave it there.  No chimes!

Quoted my ass for not doing anything to it...  I forgot all about it when I don't have to use the auto 4x4.  Gonna drive me nuts again this winter.

I just brought mine to the dealer and they ordered me a new transfer case. Of this solves my issue I'll tell you as it's covered under warranty.

It’s not the transfer case, it’s the control module under the dash near the gas pedal

The bulletin I read said it's a transfer case? Do you have the bulletin saying otherwise?

That’s what I was getting to. If it’s a high pitched whine when in auto, it’s the capacitors in the TCM up under the dash. No fix for it except to dynamat it.

I don’t. But it’s somewhere on this forum. Detailed replacing the control module if adding insulation didn’t help.

Hi All, I've just purchased a used 2016 Sierra and immediately noticed this incredibly irritating chirp noise. Its akin to the chrip a digital timex watch makes when being set. Seems to originate from the Transfer Case Control Module as many others have posted before me.     • I have the same running boards on my truck and I do agree they are bulky. I also find myself stepping over them when getting in and out of the truck. Besides providing protection to the rocker panels, they aren't very useful.  I will be replacing them soon with the Amp Powersteps.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.
