High frequency noise coming from dash when in 4WD

I guess that is true. Mass production is what hurts quality the most.

I've been a contractor in Chrysler, GM, Toyota, Honda, Ford and as much as you can rely on the QC you must also rely on the person doing the work. Some people you could tell liked their job or did great work for the security aspect (lots of things closing in Ontario) and others you could tell were working just hard enough to get overlooked.

I have the exact same noise from my 4x4 switch. It drives me insane....it took awhile to pinpoint the chirp. Same as everyone else it's silent in 2 wheel.

It's been down to the dealer this week and they are replacing the switch as soon as the part gets here. (Under warranty) I will let everyone know if this works!

It is not the switch. Here is the document that states it is the capacitors in the transfer case control module.

Here is a document that explains the problem and a series of capacitors that will fix the problem.

If I'm understanding this correctly, still nothing the dealer can/will do under warranty to fix this?

I have a job that tests my hearing on an annual basis. I have good hearing. I have turned off the HVAC and radio and still cannot hear this noise. I bought the truck used last summer and the transfer case was replaced shortly thereafter so I don't know if it made the sound prior to this. My wife hears no noise either. I wonder if there is something different (i.e. Actuator design etc)with the new transfer case that eases the electrical strain put on the 4WD system?

I picked my truck up in January of 2014. I also have pretty good hearing, and normally notice sounds that others don't notice. I've never heard any kind of high pitched noise while in 4wd. I realize that some people can't hear certain frequencies, but It amazes me that GM can't fix this issue when some trucks clearly exhibit it, while others don't. It's almost like the horrible transmission shifting. Some owners say they don't experience it at all, while others absolutely hate the way their trucks shift.

I only heard it in my truck when in auto 4wd.

I used the Auto 4x4 setting for the first time recently in my '15, heard this noise and instantly turned it off. I don't recall hearing this in my old 2010.

I could hear the high pitch sound quite clearly, so I built a makeshift sound dampening box around the TCCM and reduced the volume of the ring down about 75%. I am still going to explore building a better sound deadening box. Stinks to know that they all(most) do this.

That's good to hear, sorry to be ignorant but, where is the TCCM and could you share what you used to make the box.

So the TCCM is right above and to the right of the gas pedal, it's a box that has a couple of of harnesses plugged into it. It almost doesn't sound like the sound is coming from there, but it is.

The box I crafted was really just made with random things I had around the garage. It is a few pieces of some rolled rubber roofing and some packing foam that I fashioned to fit snug around the TCCM without any adhesive etc. It is quite crude, but not visible by any means when installed, so I don't mind much. I can most likely find some better materials for crafting a better one, but this was just using scraps I had.

Thanks for sharing. I'll try to make something in my shop. I have access to lots of foam because I build shipping cases for a living.

This noise is very annoying. I really hope they come up with a solution soon or I'll probably be hanging a for sale sign on mine. It's the only complaint I have about this truck but it's also bad enough that I can't stand driving it in anything but 2wd and I bought a 4x4 for a reason... to be able to use it!

They replaced the switch at the dealer ...and it still does it!

Time to build a homemade sound deadening box to coverup the tccm.

Can't believe I need to do this myself on such an expensive truck.

    • The truck is a 1995 Chevrolet S10 Blazer, 4.3 VIN "W" engine. :cracks knuckles:   On a whim - because I needed a headache - this truck was for sale so I stopped to take a look. Doesn't run. Well, it does, but barely. Long crank, choppy idle, bad misfire(s), it REEKS of fuel. I can DO this..I'm thinking. Diamond in the rough. One owner until last year. A young guy is selling it, he bought it 6 months ago. It stranded him more than once, he's got a newborn. It was in the shop 10 days ago and he "thinks" they said it needs a new fuel injection system. He can't put any more money into it, needs it gone. I was thinking of upgrading my Macbook, which is a total want, not a need. For less than the price of a new laptop I can have fun for months tinkering on this truck and enjoying it. I'm taking this truck home. The guy was beyond thrilled, his wife was there, she thanked me profusely, I could tell they were hurting. They seemed like good people in a bind.   Some parts, a wash, maybe a set of tires, and I can have a few months of fun and then turn it for beer money (or the next project).   Sure enough, there's a work order from a shop last week in the INCHES of paperwork on this truck dating back to when the first owner bought it. They put a new distributor in it, fuel injection work describes basically opening the plenum and putting it back together. He said he couldn't afford any more work so he had them button it up and that's when he put it up for sale.   I'm not well versed in 4.3. I did discover 1995 uses the 1992-1995 SCPI "Spider" injector which is riddled with issues from splitting lines, clogged or cracked poppet valves and plastic spider legs that crumble over time. Cool. I'll just order me a ne---. Oh, the auto parts store doesn't have it? Rock Auto doesn't have it. eBay? $$$$$$ for used. These are UNAVAILABLE period end of story unless you know "a guy" who's still got one in a box somewhere.   Can't upgrade to the '96-'04 injector, it's a different plenum, wiring/pinout and sensor config.   There are a few kinda "know a guy" -guy rebuild services for these injectors out there for about $350. Okay, Okay... I'd like to know if anyone has used them? Anyone got a lead on these crappy 92-95 spiders?   I also don't want to send MY spider to Narnia and back without knowing if that's truly the problem. I guess I'll need to pull apart the plenum and do some digging.   I was also thrown for a loop. This 1995 model year truck has an OBD-II connector. The interface is decidedly not OBD-II. I can read and reset trouble codes and view live data, but there's not a lot of data. Like misfire count and on what cylinder, that's not there. It's OBD-1.5.   Nothing is ever easy. Now it makes sense why this guy wanted to disappear this thing for cheap. I'm guessing the shop told him the injector is toast, the part is unobtainable and they're not going to sort sending the thing to a rando offering rebuild service on craigslist, and the kid likely can't be without a working car for 3 weeks even if they'd facilitate that.   Experience with these early SCPI's? Stories? Things to check? Sympathy? (..Nah...)   This can sit until I sort it. But I haven't had a problem with a vehicle I couldn't easily solve in a long time.
    • I have four that read by the dash 8 to 10% better than miles/pump calculations and I have one that is spot on.
    • The average lifespan of automobiles on the road is increasing - here's why
    • Typically it is the Torque Converter, I have a 2.7L Trail Boss and between 25-65 MPH at 1300-1500 rpms under light throttle it has a shudder which I almost consider and bobble or a gargle sound. They replaced my TC but it did not help any, others say it has fixed their issues. It has been back twice now with no fix after.
    • Still $3.01 with even more places at this price
