3000 Miles and I get a Low Oil Warning on my dash.

I didn't lose an ounce of oil in 5500 miles which is when I had my first oil change. Something is definitely up.

My manual just says "on some vehicles, this message (Engine Oil Low Add Oil) displays when the engine oil level may be too low...." Doesn't say how low though.

Page 10-11 of the Silverado manual says if the oil is below the cross-hatched area at the tip of the dipstick, add 1 qt and then recheck. So it sounds like there's 1 quart difference between the bottom and the top of the cross-hatched area. So anything below that area is at least one quart low.

Don't know if your manual says the same thing.

Hey there TYLERZ7180,

I’m sorry to hear of this problem that you have experienced with your Sierra. I will be glad to take a further look into this for you. Please send a private message referencing this thread if I can be of any assistance. I look forward to hear from you!

Welcome to modern day gm v-8's, my 2005 eats oil also, in fact many gm vehicles now consume oil like never before. Many blame the afm setups but my 05 is pre afm so sorry to those that think that's the issue, it's not as my 05 eats oil just as bad! Unless your consumption is severe like 2 quarts per 3k GM will not do a thing, I can already tell you right now they will state it's normal which is complete B.S. Been driving for over 20 years now and this is the first engine that I ever had that consumed oil at this pace!

I just checked my oil this morning. At 1600 miles I was down less than a 1/4 quart but I also stopped by the pit service yesterday to get it washed. I think they only washed it but I will check at 2k and see if changes.

My old trailblazer went though a quart every 2500-3000 miles and my wife's Lexus uses less than a 1/4 quart in 6500 miles.

No usage here @ 4k miles. Holding steady since i pulled it off the lot.

In 1999 I bought a new ford, it had the 4.6. From new it used I quart every 2500 miles, they said that was within range of being normal. I never had that before and was a little worried. At 20000 miles I put a vortec SC on it with 5lbs of boost, oil usage stayed the same, two years and 100,000 miles I traded, never had a problem. Im guessing they can still be reliable using a little oil.

He did tell me to come in every 2,000 miles for what he called a "pit stop" to get my oil level checked and topped off. Might not be a bad idea.

Is that supposed to be normal? To stop into a dealer ever 2000 miles to add oil?

I would have never thought so, but that's what he told me. He said if it needed oil they'd add it free. (I suppose that's only for the 2 years free service period though, but I'm not sure).

At the first oil change I didn't burn any, and I'm only about 350 miles since then and haven't checked. But I will!

I just had my oil changed for the first time in my Sierra. (2014 SLT) The oil was always right between the hash marks during my checks and that was about every 500-700 miles. I changed it at 5000 miles and was advised that the only oil that you should put in it, quoting the service data, was synthetic. If it was me, for what you paid for that baby, I would haul a&& to the dealership and inquire. Let us know what you find out. Like I said, mine was fine.

I'm not sure if the oil the dealer puts in is full synthetic or not. I do know it's Dexos certified 0W-20 but I think it may be a synthetic blend.

It was within the hash marked area, maybe right at it. Its now at the very end of the dip stick...is that about a quart?

The full and low hash marks represent one qt. So at the end of stick would be about 1 1/2 qt or so. On eight qts for the motor, you should have enough to get to the dealer to check with out adding oil. Most oil burners on the 900gmts started burning oil after some miles had been driven. Like 20-50,000 on the truck.

Trk must set at least 15 mins before checking after driving.

Well first off I change my oil often when brand new. Went in for first oil change at 1000 miles. Second oil change 3000 miles later. When I went in for the second one the guy told me "I noticed you change your oil rather often. I just want to let you know even though GM says free oil changes for the first two years doesn't mean they're unlimited. In fact your only allowed 4." That's fine for me I'll go Mobil 1 after.

Also the second oil change I caught the guy ordering nonsynthetic 5/30w when it calls for 0/20w synthetic.. I made them correct it but makes me wonder how many are driving around with the wrong oil..
