Just like any other truck that puts up with salt from the winter roads or lives by an ocean breeze. It is a 12-13 year old truck after all.

I think the main problem is what they put on the roads in the winter combined with owners not doing some kind of rust preventative each year. My trucks frame is still solid for a used 230k mile truck, but I had to do the maintenance on it to get it back to good shape. I think a few more years of it being left go would have made it a lost cause.

I've got a similar problem with my 2003 2500 4WD Suburban. I've had numerous issues with it - all I believe related to rust. I've had to replace brake lines, the rear bumper is rusted out - the frame is really rusty - etc.

 

Since Chevy doesn't even make a 2500 series Suburban any more - I've got a quandary on my hands, because I really anticipate needing to have the services of a truck like this for the next 20 years or so. I only drive it maybe 5-6000 miles a year at best - but when I need it - I need it.

 

The way I see it - I have a few options:

 

1) Do a restoration on this truck. The body itself is in pretty good shape. It's really the undercarriage and frame that need attention. I'm thinking that pulling the body off and doing a full frame resto - or even getting a new frame (somebody actually has one available locally for $2k) - and then carefully prepping, painting and rustproofing that new frame with an eye towards longevity - might give me a truck that will last for a good many years to come

 

2) Selling this truck and picking up a later year GMT800 2500 series Suburban with low miles (I've seen a few for sale with as little as 30k) - and then carefully prep that to ward off rust.

 

3) Go to a GMT900 2500 series Suburban and try to get to it before it gets rusty.

 

Question: has anybody here removed the body from the frame on one of these trucks - is it a huge pain in the butt job?

My 03 still looks decent somehow, But the previous owner of my 99 must not of washed it or undercoated it at all...

Later this summer I plan on parking it fr a bit and going over it with a sandblaster and coating it all with chassis saver, I will also use Fluid film fr the rest of the trucks life.

My 2006 was pretty bad at 230k. Mainly just surface rust, not to much came off in chunks.

I am not impressed with the "look" of my frame. i have an annual rust check service done and have a full warranty with them. the wax was peeling starting in 2012. i used to spray rust check black paint to help keep it protected. i had installed in the fall of 2013 a gm wheel well protector. we have bad witness here, but my truck gets rinsed off daily. that is right daily. i also gets hand washed several times a week. still when i am under neath, i have concerns with keeping this truck long term. but it is what it is. in fact i figure i wash it so much, that i have caused my dash board to crack!!!!! :)

Sorry to hear, but did you ever undercoat it? We Krown (rust control) our 2004 every year, after a thorough bath in the spring. All cross members were dripping with oil after the Krown was sprayed. Traded the 04 off last week, frame was solid.

 

My 2011 will be getting the same treatment.

Figured this was a good thread to post this in.

I noticed the replacement cross member tube is straight tubing versus the obvious curve in the factory tube. Doesn't the straight tube cause the gas tank to sit down in back at an angle? I am just preparing to do the same repair to my 1999 Silverado and it would sure be a lot simpler to use a straight tube instead of fabricating one with a curve.

From what I've heard is keeping your vehicle in a garage. Especially if it is heated can speed up the corrosion process.

 

I keep my trucks in my heated garage and don't have any issues

tubes and box beams... gone like the 1940s.

I love welding, had to learn a lot. subaru played with tubes in the 80s... non-stop fail.

 

If you can rid of amperage, the anode attraction will stop.

 

Salt is not the issue. You attract salt to a steel breakdown? you got uranium, outer space, somebodies septic tank, a city drain cover, beach sand, and whatver we let out of our backsides.

 

the frame needs an "out" to stay alive, not an "in."

 

LED lighted trucks are going to leave the new wimpy trucks called strong.. even though they are no different.

 

Real shame. I just browsed photos of 2 cylinder boxer trucks from the turn of the 18th century... 10000 times the wieght of the engine on flexing c-rails and solid tires. All .Day. Long.

 

GM ought to be embarassed today.

 

I took in the last of the old c-rails, already did my crude welding. it was in great shape. 19 years, 350k. It did hve an atomic event to get through it all.. should have expected bizarre anyway.

 

 

the spare tire is another catalyst, until the silicon blended years.. that is actually not all that old ya know. maybe 10-15 years ago before the real good stuff came out.

 

 

kudos to that welding, it is well worth it for the trucks. Don't be afraid of the ugly steel.

Good eye...The tank is unnoticeably lower, You would literally have to measure it to tell a difference. But that being said where you will notice a difference is with your gas tank strap bolt. I used a threaded rod and a nut instead to make it easier. If you want I can take a picture of it all back together so you can see how it looks.

Thanks for the reply. I figured it would have to be that way. What is it about the straight tube that necessitates the threaded rod and nut?

 

I used threaded rod and a nut to attach tank strap in my former 2000 Silverado but that was just because the spring nut broke and I had to drill it out. I made my own T-nut for the top out of steel bar stock. A matter of using what i had on hand.

 

I have my 1999 apart now and and I am beginning the repairs to the rusted portions of the crossmembers. There is very little detailed documentation on the web for this particular repair and yours is among the best.

 

Please post the picture here as I am sure it would benefit others besides me.

Well, I know why you needed the threaded rod and nut. The strap is actually too short to reach the bracket. I fixed it by modifying the strap to be longer there and that fixed it. The strap had already been cobbled together because of rust by the previous owner and i just cut out that shoddy work and made it the correct length. Lots of work replacing all those cross members and gussets but very satisfying. I'm ready for another 16 years now.

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
