It's no way it went from 5th to 1st, especially going that fast. The only way it would is if you had it in manual mode and you lowered the max gear down to 1st which would be your fault and not the truck's fault. I'm thinking what happened was what jbreed said. That you were actually going a little over 95 and the governor kicked in at 98. It feels like it downshifts but it's cutting power for a second. I believe that's what happened since you said it only did it briefly.

No sahla01gmc, Fed helping some close locals. Thank you for those of you that had adult level replies.

Chris you may be right about what it may have felt like and for what i dwelt with I consider it a safety issue.

My 4 speed will drop to 2nd at 70 mph and it feels like 1st and goes. But the programming is smart enough to know limits on speed and rpm for each gear. It wont drop to a gear if component damage is a risk. but seriously with the issues you are having with the truck and dealer, call GM and make a complaint about the dealer not wanting to work with you to find the issues and deal with the Better Business Bureau. They will deal with the dealer and help get tou out of that truck if in fact it is a Lemon

I was thinking the same thing. It's not GM, it sounds like the dealer is the problem. That's why I said go get a second opinion.

The dealer has done everything GM has told them to do. The feel of downshifting they couldn't duplicate as well as some other small things but over ask the dealer has been great. I've been in talks with GM about my state's lemon law because it was under repair 14 days past what the state says makes it a lemon but GM is bucking. I'll figure it out here soon.

There are some public roads in the US now where 85 MPH is the legal speed limit. There are definitely some in Texas, do not know about California.

I drove a Ford Escort in Montana years ago when there was no day time speed limit for passenger cars and trucks. I had the car going at 110 MPH for quite some time, but at that speed it had a tendency to hit the speed limiter. It did not downshift or anything like that, it just felt like it lost all power for a split second. Then the power resumed as the speed dropped to 108 MPH indicated or so. The car had H rated tires good for 130 MPH sustained speed, the law allowed that speed in daytime, the weather was good and the traffic was light. And yes, there were plenty of cars which passed me while driving close to 110 MPH.

I don't think it went to first gear at 85 mph. I think if it did the tires would have skidded - probably all four if you were in four wheel drive. I've had mine up to it's max governed speed of 100 mph a few times and it rides quiet and smooth, but it will down shift a gear or two if I punch it at 85 - and it does wind up the revs a lot, but not all the way to first gear. I think maybe the vette or the +$100,000 sports cars might hit 85 in first gear, but not a 2014 GM truck.

The dealer should get in and ride with you so you can point out each and every item before you let him out of the cab, otherwise they can just say you're mistaken or they can't fix it if it doesn't make that sound or vibration.

Is there a chance that you may have accidentally engaged the max-trailering option from the end of the shift lever?

I've done that a couple times. Very easy to do. RPM's will jump dramatically because computer thinks it's towing a load.

???

If it downshifted to first there would be a trail of parts on the side of the highway. Max speed in first is probably 20-30. If it somehow downshifted to first at 85 you'd destroy the engine and trans and possibly the rest of the drivetrain.

I agree. A downshift to 1st at 85 mph is catastrophic; I'd bet money you probably wouldn't be here to post this if it so happened.

...but he is here, so we have to listen to it.

Yep, there's a nice long stretch of an 85mph one a few miles from my house that I find very useful to see what a vehicle can do and if its vibration free. :)

I've been on it cruising at 85-90mph, and have been passed by Texas Highway Patrol.

I would go with hitting the gov. Not so sure the trucks were designed with pursuit in mind. Maybe with the proper fed credentials, you can get that gov turned off.

Do you have the seats turned on for remote start? That can be turned on and off. Although... they don't get very warm. The elements are farther away from the seat surface because of the cooling option.

I believe the only full size SUV rated for pursuit is a 2WD Tahoe with the police package. This vehicle has lowered suspension, high speed capability tires, and no speed limiter. I.t is capable of about 140 MPH top speed according to test reports I saw. This with the 5.3 liter AFM engine and 3.08 rear end gears. The 4WD version of police Tahoe is not pursuit rated due to its higher ground clearance and less stability at high speeds.
