Retrax vs Roll n Lock

My dad swears by the retrax. He puts them on all of his trucks. I helped install one - it was pretty easy and it seemed like real high quality. They are expensive though.

I just installed the Peragon cover on my new 2014 Silverado. Looks great, already gotten compliments. Spent the extra $29 to have it lock both sides or the cover. I looked at MANY covers. I think that you probably wont go wrong with any of the major ones., but I liked the Peragon because:

1. Retractable, without a huge box in the back to hold the rollup....and these boxed do catch dirt.

2. I like the powder coated aluminum vs a vinyl cover.

3. You can open the cover without dropping the tailgate.

4. Takes about 30 secs to remove the panels if you neeed the entire bed.

5. VERY quality construction.

6. Great customer service.

7. Great price.

8. If you damage a panel, the individual panel can be replaced...you dont have to buy a whole new cover.

I plan to put a TruckVault in my truck that is 10" high & covers the entire bed at a height about the top of the fender well. From what I could see in photos of the Peragon, there may be a mounting bracket toward the front of the bed that would be in the way. Could you comment or post a photo of it? Also, did you have to alter the bed rail protectors in any way? Thanks for any help you can provide.

Answers to some questions about the Peragon. You don not have to alter the bed rail protectors at all. As for space, the cover, fully retracted, leaves you an area the with of the bed, 10 inches high, and 10 inches deep. The panels, completely retracted, are about 10 inches thick. If you need the entire bed, the panels remove in about 30 secs, with no tools. So the retracted panels probably take up about the same space as the rollup boxes....but you dont have a box that will collect water and debris. If you need all the bed all the time, the fold up cover would be better for you. I looked at most all of the covers out there from reputable companies, and think the are all good...all have pluses and minuses. It comes down to what the individual wants/needs. I wanted a retractable. Other than the Peragon ($699) others seemed to start at $1200. Plus, Peragon will give a military discount, which gave me 2 upgrade options ($29 each) for free. Good luck on your choice.

@captras - I watched the videos of the Peragon cover. I like the looks and the concept of its operation. But it looks to me like you have to allow clearance when loading the bed for the panels to close. And if the load shifts toward the front of the bed, will the panels still open? Since you have one, maybe you can give us a report on the goods and the bads.
wondering the same thing

I had a Roll-n-lock installed on my 2011 Silverado which I use as my work truck. Three years, 112k miles and a lot of use - the Roll-n-lock worked great. I bought a 2014 Sierra and had a Roll-n-lock installed on it. Not the cheapest cover, but has worked great for me. I need something that I can open and close quickly and also left open sometimes, etc - so a retractable was the way to go.

Reviving this old thread. Show off your bed cover. What do you have? How do you like it?

RetraxPro, 10 months into it and it works fine. No leaks!, gives me the utility I want, easy sliding adjustable, finish still looks great. Get asked a lot who made it as I removed the decals. No regrets.

Retrax Pro - 2 months 4k miles - love it! not a single issue - install took just about an hour and half with clean up. Rolls smooth, looks clean and keep 99% of the water out -

One thing to mention is it will scratch easier than Roll n Lock due to the bare aluminum surface. Just means you have use a bit more care when loading unloading or standing on it

I really want to have a cover painted to match the truck. It seems that Peragon is the only one that offers this.

I got the RetraxONE. It is cheaper than the RetraxPro. No problems and I love it. This is all I need.

I guess with the Retrax you either have to drill for the drain tubes, or use that one bigger hole in the bed with the two tubes merging into one.

I am leaning towards the Retrax, but the One is more in-line with budget. I have heard that the One rattles when driving. Wondering if you have had this issue?

Thanks

You do have to drill two drain holes (one on each side) in the front of truck bed. I put in rubber washers where the tubes go into the bed. These fit perfect and the other ridge of the washer is cut in the middle to clamp around the metal bed. I got them in Home Depot. There are already two holes in the bed you can use (GM put in) which you could use but you will have to make them a little bit bigger.

My family purchased three of these. All Retrax One. Two Toyota Tacoma and one Chevy Silverado. We had no issues of rattles and this fit more in my budget than the Retrax Pro. There are four clamps to hold down the item like a lot of these covers. One of my clamps did loosen up but I am not sure if I tighten it properly in the first place.

No rattles with the Pro - I got the extended rails as well that cover the stake pocket - love the look
