2014 GMC sierra 1500 SLT, i just bought the truck 6 months ago and have had issue after issue with this truck. i love the truck but wonder if its worth all the hassles, as the weather warmed up i discovered the AC condenser had cracks at the welds (seems to be a common problem ) but not a issue GMC has stepped forward and Corrected. the Tighten gas cap light comes on when the tank drops below 1/4 in cold weather. the  truck burns 2+ quarts of oil in the time of an oil change. now on my way from Boston to DE the transmission temp rose to 212 deg and the torque converter started shuttering. pulled over IN THE BRONX!! and let it cool off for an hour checked fluid all looks good no burnt smell no leaks. went to drive off and it didnt move till rpm around 1700+ then slamed into gear like it was in neutral. got on highway drove another 100 miles and the trans kept hanging out at 205 deg, i turned on the towing button to keep the truck running on the V8 and all seemed well for the remainder of trip. next morning Truck same thing after about 10 min of driving!!!!! slams into ist gear and wont shift past 1st gear. pull it into parking , put it in reverse wont back up just revs. put truck in park shut off truck, start put in reverse and it backs up??? so now i am stuck in DE no way to get home with a truck i spent a crap load of money on. this was just towed to GMC dealer in Delaware, i will post How GMC handles this issue. i hate to part with the truck but If i cant count on it i may be changing brands, on the good side my 1983 GMC 3500 dumpy truck never lets me down. ohhh the good old days...

Truck dropped off at Union Park GMC and they have stated that the Transmission is Shot and there is "shavings" in the transfer case and it should also be replaced. So i want to reach out to see how many others have had the transmission fail within 100,000 miles that do not tow with there truck!

attached is the Price you would incur if this is a common issue that GM does not fix there Quality issues.

give a shout out so i can be sure this is just a odd case and not a common occurrence since the bill to repair this truck is exceeding $6,000 as shown in the attached repair orders, i bought this truck to tow a small camper and haven't even bought the camper yet and the transmission failed on a 300 mile trip. this truck is clean and never been off road.

please post your power train issues with a 2014-2016 sierra 5.3

so i can make a well informed decision on the next step with this truck.

Thanks

Kurt

The trucks are only as smart as the people who designed them and programmed them. Given the strict marching orders to maximize the fuel economy at the expense of performance, your truck is "tuned" for maximum fuel economy, including odd transmission behavior under some conditions. Aftermarket tune appears to be the only way to fix this issue.

My 2014 the transmission would would sound like drive shaft was bad.  Sip a gear and so on.  I was using both feet   One to acclerate and the other to brake.  I changed to using right foot only.  This fixed my problems.  I must have been braking with one foot on brake the other on gas pedel.   I guess i was confusing the computer as to go or stop.  Once i usedright foot only all my transmission problems were gone.

The repair is only as smart as the tech that performed it!!. seems After the transmission burnt its self up (they claimed TCC failed) No Chit from heat ya think !! they replaced the transmission and there diagnosis of the transfer case shavings were (Normal Wear),  now we are here (3) months later and the Tranny temp read 225 deg yesterday not towing anything.. so i checked the transmission cooling lines and they are cold, well up on the lift let it cool down and removed the Transmission thermal bypass valve and sure enough it was sticking. i cycled the plunger a few times put the unit back together and drove all over hell and it was now working properly (temp runs at 194- heats up to 202 max then back to 194) so i called my local dealer in MA and ordered the unit $85)  what truly pissed me off is this is a new transmission and likely the cause of replacing the old, do you think they would have replaced this!!! When i dissembled this unit there was oxidation all over the top around the C-Clip. this was the original OEM Thermal bypass valve) it was never replaced!!  since the transmission is now under 50K warrenty i could have left it up to GM and maybe next transmission they would have caught it, but i just decided that the $85 part was just easier then the BS.

i just wanted to get back on here and close out this tread i started.

With new tranny thermo valve in the truck it runs steady at 194 deg. Fixed.....

Thermo valves can stick and you will destroy your TCC.  So watch the tranny temp  you will see it over 212 deg and up to 225. This is bad.....

I have a 2015 Silverado that has me concerned about the transmission. It almost always shifts hard into and out of second gear. If in city traffic and taking foot off the gas at same time it shifts into second it will sometimes jerk very hard. I have also experienced the stalling a few times when. Giving lots of gas on interstate lane changes. I keep hoping I will get used to it but something is just not right. I saw some posts about tunes or flash. Any help would be great. I like the fuel economy but want my truck to perform well also.

As you all have described above, these transmissions are complete garbage. At 89k miles, my 2014 needed valves and the torque converter replaced. Still was acting up, and even had new issues after that work was done. Now at 92k miles I’m getting a remanufactured transmission under warranty. Hopefully this one will be better. Call your GMC dealer and demand they fix this!

So has anyone on here had any luck resolving the issue? I have a 2014 Silverado 1500 Ltz that I bought from the dealer used a year ago. It clunks and bangs intermittently while shifting. Brought it to the dealer twice they said it's normal. Problem seems to be getting worse and the truck just broke 60k. Seems to be a common issue with these trucks and if it persists I will never buy gm again! Is there a solution or a customer service rep that might be able to guide us in the right direction?

Wish I could help you, my truck is in the shop getting a warrantied transmission rebuild at ~98,800 miles. Apparently the torque converter went bad and I am guessing it decided to share its metal shavings with everything else.

I Bought a 2018 Silverado Z71 quad cab 4x4. I have owned it for about 6 months and it now has 8500 miles on it. I brought it to the dealer 3 times now for a very consistant.... inconsistant shifting issue! Its driving me nuts! It seems to have difficulty finding gears at times, other times it a hard upshift or downshift, sometimes it surges and other times it bangs into gears. There is times when it runs and drives perfect. needless to say, every time I bring it in to be corrected they tell me nothing is wrong. I have been told its normal lash, it relearns the shift point every 400 shifts, it has the latest updates and no problem found. for a 50+K sticker price I'm very unhappy. I have owned a Tahoe, GMC 1500HD truck, F150, Ram and currently drive multiple different vehicles like a F350 and a chevy 2500 and none of them shift like my brand new truck! I'm just venting here and opened a case with Chevy. I will post any updates or corrections for anyone else who is experiencing the same issues.

I saw a post earlier about a Class Action Lawsuit but it seems to have either been deleted or buried. Just Google search it...It was filed either the 19th or 24th I’d December 18.

    • I've been eyeing an upgrade to my tonneau cover for a bit now.  Intrigued by the BAK MX4 EZ-Lift with the torsion spring and went for the upgrade.  Thoughts and musings during unpacking, install and a few days of usage.   Once my order went into Realtruck, it took about 4 days to ship.  Unfortunately, FedEx Ground destroyed the box and contents and it was unusable upon receipt.  To Realtruck's credit, one email with pictures and an RMA was sent to me to send the first one back, and another unit was shipped out.  It arrived 3 days later, unscathed.   I opened the box and it looked like every other BAK MX4.   Biggest differences are the rails and retaining clamps, and of course the spring attached to the cover itself.     NOTE - if you are upgrading from a MX4 to the EZ-Lift, you will have to replace the rails.  The EZ-Lift rails have a notch cut in them to allow the new style retaining clamps to fit properly.  The new retaining clamps also have 2 knobs/carriage bolts and there are two tracks underneath the front panel. The strap clips are mildly different (more like the Undercover Flex clamps) in that the screws go in from the underside.  Personally I prefer these over the BAK clamps that use the nutserts that are a nuisance to install.  The remainder of the parts in the box (drain tubes, rail clamps, and bumper pads) are standard issue BAK.     I did not replace my front bed seal at the time because it seemed to be in decent shape.   BAK recommends shims on the GM trucks unless you place the clamps on the flanges about 1/3 of the way in from both the front and rear of the bed.  I shimmed the front and the middle, and initially placed the clamps equidistant.  This also turned out to be a mistake, because when I set the cover in place, the new style retaining clamps wouldn't clear the front clamp.   New style clamp inserted in the track:     And the issue which occurred because the front rail clamp was too far forward:     Once I removed the shim from the front of the bed, and slid the clamp back to the front flange, everything cleared fine.     The cover set on the rails without issue and I installed the strap clamps.  After I completed my adjustments, I pulled the pin to activate the torsion spring.  Mistake #3 on my part.  PULL THE PIN AS THE VERY VERY VERY LAST STEP!  The reason is, once you pull the pin, the torsion spring is activated.  If you have to loosen the front clamps and adjust the cover, the front panel will - by virtue of the spring, refuse to lay down.  The only way to get it to lay down so you can reinstall and tighten the clamps is to fully open the panel against the back of the cab, which will then allow the front panel of the cover to lay down and be tightened.  Not a big deal unless you haven't installed the foam pads yet (typically the last step) because minus the foam pads, you will need to place something between the frame of the cover and the back window so it doesn't get scratched.  The next time I install one I will install the foam pads before I pull the pin and activate the spring.   After using it for a few days:   The spring assist is great.  You literally can open it with one hand.  My shoulders aren't getting any younger and this was part of my motivation to swap out. The second panel latches and unlatches itself as you open and close the cover.  Neat in concept, however it took me a minute to get used to closing the cover and not hearing the "latching" sound that would tell me it was locked in place. The paddle handles are a huge upgrade and I wouldn't be surprised to see them become the standard across the Realtruck line.  They effectively eliminate the concern that a thief could coat hanger the cover open and get to the contents in the bed. I'm not sure why the very front panel on my cover has a different finish from the other 3 panels.  I have a request into Realtruck to find out if mine was not manufactured properly or if it was by design.   All in all I'm pleased.  Same level of protection, looks good, keeps stuff mostly dry (they all leak around the tailgate) and easy to install.
    • Same here, first I bought a few filters to get me going right after I bought my truck to do some short distance initial oil changes, then realized I could buy a case lot for less as they drop the price if filters or trans oil etc is bought by the un opened case lot as well as the discount for buying the vehicle there. So I have filters for a while but its good to know going forward, knowing to expect it to be a different part number and looking filter at the dealer and not be confused over it and think they are handing me the wrong part.
